While it's not ideal we're also not 13 players down on last season. The reality is:

Left: McAtee, Sharp, Clark, Doyle, Stevens (-5)
Still injured: RND, Brewster, O'Connell (since left) (net 0 impact)
New injuries: Bogle, McBurnie, Coulibaly, Fleck (-4)
Returns from injury: Osborn (+1)
Returns from loan: Seriki (+1)
Promoted from U21s: Freckleton, Marsh (+2)
Signings cleared to play: Slimane, Larouci (+2)
Signings not cleared to play: Traoré (net 0 impact)

Currently net -2 on last season.

Another way of looking at it based on the pre-season lineups:
McAtee > Marsh (downgrade)
Stevens > Larouci (TBC)
Doyle > Slimane (TBC)
Sharp > Traoré (TBC)
Clark > Freckleton (TBC)
After a summer break you might have hoped to see less than 9 injured - I hope all these promoted youngsters are gonna tear the PL a new one - anyway we live in hope of new players arriving to go into the starting eleven at LCB & LMF and to go on the bench as cover for RCB/CCB , MF & striker.

I make it 8 currently unavailable due to injuries and Benie unavailable due to the issue around the visa, so:

Norwood, Fleck, McBurnie, Jebbison, Bogle, Brewster, RND, and Coulibally.

A lot for a club to manage especially when budgetary constraints are in place. A couple are hangovers from last Autumn but to have 6 others unavailable already... hopefully we will have Benie and a couple more off that last bad next Saturday. Though we really need to get to the bottom of why McBurnie and Bogle seem to spend so much time on the treatment table. As for Fleck.... Sometimes you reap what you sow when you make stupid decisions. He had a history of being injured for much of last season, hasn't been the same player for a long time, and seems to have a weakness with his old leg break injury... So we offer him a new contract. Beggars belief.

Traore, Jebbison, McBurnie and Norwood I am confident will be involved v Stuggart

We need another striker. We can't rely on injury prone players like Mcburnie and Brewster, then untried Osula, Traore Jebbison to partner Ndaiye (if he stays)

Nothing seems to change some players come back from injury and then another bunch of players get injured.

Until we can replace Fleck in the squad resigning him makes sense.
I fully agree that he is not the answer to the LWB position in the 1st eleven, but we do have to put together a squad of 25 and I don’t know if we have two youngsters in that position who will be better than him if needed in the PL

Regarding fleck, you can throw the ‘always injured’ tag at him for non-contact muscle injuries etc, but not for contact strikes to a leg which has already been broken, and was the reason behind missing so much last season

If Brewster is back in full contact training with the rest of the squad now there's no reason to keep him out against Stuttgart. Maybe he'll get 45

I agree he will have played around 45 mins by Christmas, probably in the League Cup game. Maybe him and Fleck will put a full 90 in between the pair.

Resigning Fleck made no sense at all.
He's injury prone, slow and I'm afraid 'past it '.
There must have been loads of better options available on frees for squad filling.

Yep, but some on here were insistent that we needed to fill out the squad with cheap existing players who 'already know the systemand will be a fill in player' and couldn't get their heads around the counter argument that he is just a drain on the finite resources if he is going to be injured or not available for most of the time.

He was one of my favourite players and he has done us proud, but it was the right time to let him go. Atm, with his tendency to get injured for a few weeks every time he is kicked on the shin on the old break, he is just a drain. Even if he is an a low wage it is still a wage that is going out the door for relatively nothing back in return. Harsh but true. No one can tell me that a professional football club in the PL couldn't identify a cheapish younger alternative even if it was for a few hundred grand from the lower leagues.

Fuck sake, as an example, I'd rather us have had the lad from Rochdale (who utlimately signed for Brentford) instead of signing JF up again for another year, so there are players out there who are relatively cheap and would be coming with potential. Poor decision but what's done is done. Waste of a wage though this season.

Had there been “loads” who would be better and cost the same or less then I would have thought that the club would have signed them.
The problem with so many free signings is that they want a signing on fee and salary to match their expectations, so they are not free and can be expensive. The number of frees who would want to be bottom end squad fillers is probably small anyway.

8 players out and doesn't sound like many will be returning vs Stuttgart. Missing a major part of pre season is a big loss. I don't even know how bad these injuries are.

Seeing as we need 6 new players (7 if berge goes) is their any positive news on the missing players who could make the bench at least Saturday?

RND
Bogle
Coulibaly
Fleck
Brewster
McBurnie
Jebbison

So what's up with Jebbo? Another one taken down by the sniper?

How come Hecky talks in detail to Hemmingham about injuries but when RS ask he gets defensive?
Radio sheffield wet their knickers over whatever Wednesday do so will always be critical of us and spin anything in a negative way.

And why are we given such detail about Fleck but RND’s injury details and recovery timeline are apparently a state secret?
