Looking at the official figures taken from the SUFC website (or Soccerbase where none are supplied) then:
- In his last two seasons in charge (05/06 &06/07), Warnock made a net outlay of £12.1m (i.e. transfers out less transfers in)
- In his few months in charge (during 07/08) Robson made a net gain on transfers for the club of £6.4m
- In his time as manager, Blackwell has so far made a net gain on transfers for the club of £10.12m
This shows that:
- Warnock was well supported by the board with transfer funds during the promotion to the Premiership (which he deserved having got us there).
- since being relegated, we have brought in over £16.5m in transfers (net of all purchases), being a dramatic cash influx, especially if it is correct that we have also already received £5m from West Ham
- whilst this ignores wages (which can be very substantial), and whilst the appointment of Robson was clearly a failure, this also exposes the myth that we allowed Robson to gamble the family silver on a quick rebound to the Premiership - a myth that Warnock liked to propogate in the media after his departure. Even taking into account wages, I suspect that Hulse, Davis etc coming to a newly promoted team would have been on similar, if not higher wages, than Hendrie, Naysmith coming to a newly relegated team.
The annoying aspect for me is that the Sky Sports massive cash input into the Premiership make these fluctuations for a club such as ours necessary in order to survive. For example, compared to the clubs which came down with us, we are relatively healthy, presumably because of the sales we have made. I just hope the selling stops now!
