CONFIRMED Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille

It's a very similar situation to where we've been with Berge.

We value them highly because:
  • Everyone can see that they're talented
  • They're a crucial part of our team
  • It's very hard/impossible for us to directly replace them

But teams will try and bid a bit lower than we value them because:
  • They're not tied to a long term contract
  • They're not yet proven at a higher level

And the players are happy to wait out their contracts because:
  • They're playing well and enjoy their football here
  • We've been promoted so they've got a season to prove what they can do at a higher level in a team that they're comfortable in
  • It gives them more freedom to choose their next destination
  • Money not spent on transfer fees can be put into better contracts for them

Unfortunately for us it's not a situation where we have the bargaining power.

I think it's far more likely that Ndiaye goes as he's SO talented that teams may be more willing to come close to our valuation even with 1yr left. If the money is substantial i.e. around £25m+ then I'd probably take it.

Marseille will try and play hard ball because Ndiaye has his heart set on them and they will be hoping he forces a move through by downing tools. Doesn’t seem to be the sort of lad that would down tools, he will give us his all but I’d say he still try’s and forces it through somehow.

30m Euros and I think everyone accepts this.

We aren't knocking that back and with Marseilles in the CL, it gives Iliman great exposure, being in a French speaking country as well for him and his family.

Just a question of how much Marseilles waste time. The longer they don't move decisively, regardless of whether the player would like to move to his boyhood club, if we don't have enough time to replace him, they'll be told "sorry, no dice".

So playing hardball can work both ways. We won't enter the season short of options so it is down to them to make it all make sense.

I'd rather keep him. But if somehow you have time to make a plan for the next 2-3 years and not lose 30m on an asset then you have to have some practical common sense.

We're in a bit of a bind here. He can sign pre-contract with them in January

I can't see £30 million for a second to be honest.

Maddison was £40 million and he's an England international and an established EPL midfielder who will score/create 20 goals per season.

I'd be shocked if it's £20 million given he's never played in a top division.

I'm also not convinced playing in a struggling EPL team will boost his attractiveness to potential suitors.

Think we'd be forced into accepting £15m with a hefty sell-on clause.

Cov got 18m for thier striker didn’t they - and that’s in the championship.

We should be aiming as that for the absolute floor of negotiations

Yep this. Well, it's not happened yet and its 18m plus addons, but the point stands.

We're in a better position than Cov with a better player. No way should we be looking at any less than 20m.

If clubs other than just Marseille come in for him, we will get at least £20m

And I think the issue for us will be that we'll get offers for £20 million, but not from Marseilles, and he'll not want to go and will sign a pre-contract in January. Unless there's real potential movement on the takeover, I suspect we'll want the money.

It wont be an issue as we arent selling him.

Romano is a mouthpiece for clubs and agents, they feed him information that they're obviously unable to release themselves.

Sometimes this is genuine, accurate information. Sometimes it's spurious rumours and conjecture, with the purpose of aiding negotiations, or drumming up interest.

Same can be said, but on a more local level about Pete O'Rourke and Alan Nixon.

Why is everyone making Marseille plural?
You can spell it two ways.

Is there much value of a hefty sell-on clause? (Not saying we don't include more that it might be a futile gesture).

He's joining the club he supports and they're in the Champions League. I'd imagine the likelihood of him wanting to leave there would be very low.

For comparison, Enzo Le Fee is now in last year of his contract.

He wants away and refusing to sign a new contract.

Lorient are wanting 25mill for him this window.

Marseille won't be paying anywhere near some of the amounts mentioned on here for anyone this summer. If they make a move for Ndiaye, it will be a low-ball figure and they'll bank on the player and his reps agitating for a move.

Agreed - and that will be the reason that he won't sign an extention with us. It would mean us inserting a large release clause - which Marseille wouldn't pay for. We all know that Illi wants to play for them so why would he jeopardise a move there by signing up again with us.

It's a real shame that we haven't got him for years to come. He would have been a guaranteed legend here.
