i wasn't talking about you.. sometimes i read this stuff and think 'must be a pig on the wind up' and then realise these people have been on here for years! go figure.. we've been second best a few times .. cardiff.. qpr.. bolton.. but never been outplayed like that. i'm putting it down as a one off at an unfortunate point in the season.. ymmv

I wasn't one of them but it of course *is* disappointing that with the loss of one player our season has collapsed like a cake in a bath. Yes there's an argument that we'd have taken mid table (which is where we are heading) at the beginning of the season but can you not see that, as a rational football fan, our expectations were altered by the fact that we went top of the league, outplaying Wolves, Leeds and Wednesday along the way?

My expectations weren't altered, I enjoyed those games and I think there will be more of them to come; I understand that we won't be able to beat the top teams every week and we'll have bad spells, as well as good spells.

The peaks were very high, which is what's making this very deep trough so frustrating.

Absolutely, I agree it's frustrating, but I don't think that's an excuse for us to start playing the blame game and being overcome by negativity. (Not implying you're doing that, just seems to be a theme on the board over the last week)

i don't think we'll walk it by any stretch of the imagination.. it could go down to the last game. i think we can do it though.. we will have a return to form sooner or later.. our basic form is good. it is not like we've been playing crap in every game.. some of the games we have been a bit unfortunate IMHO

I think you are thinking a lot like Wilder. While we have done ever so well this season, we could have done so much better given the position we were in coming into the winter.

I think that's where the frustration comes from- we know (and he knows) our best 11 can go toe-to-toe with any side in this league. But we couldnt maintain our great positiion - because our wider squad lacks quality at this level. If we'd have recruited better in each window then maybe we would have maintained our great start... Hence the frustration...

And to put the recruitment into some context, the scorers for Wolves combined cost £30m. We cannot buy ready made with CL experience.

Our rise from the the last game of Adkins to now is quite phenomenal. There was always likely to be a plateau point, personally I think this has occured at a higher point than I thought was possible. We had a simple run through last season that we haven't had this. The squad wasn't tested last season, it has been this. We started with lots of momentum, energy and belief that was unlikely to last the whole season. Six years since the club was last at this level, few players from this level and a manager new at this level.

Learn, adapt, improve. Unfortunately the learning phase can involve a few setbacks and disappointments. Don't think we are actually that far away, which adds to the frustration which is now showing in some fans.

And realistically. Which of our players are good enough to get into the top three sides? Who would they displace? There seems to be a strange belief that our players are better than they are so if we lose, it must be because Wilder has made mistakes. But really, I think even JOC and Fleck would struggle to hold down a first team place at Wolves, or even Villa or Derby.

To be honest if we finish top ten above the Pigs and Leeds, that's some fucking achievement for a manager in his first spell at this level with one of the lowest budgets

We've got a long way to go to compete with the likes of wolves and villa financially but this club will grow exponentially under wilder ,so maybe in a few years top two will be a realistic ambition

Can see any funds ever being provided by the board so I guess our only hope is of the club being well run and someone with serious money looking upon us as a good investment for a perm push

Not saying I want that but it seems to be the trend

And thats why for me this season is great whatever happens now. We have beaten Wednesday and got so far ahead of them that they celebrate a 0-0 draw with us like they have won the Champions League, we have held our own against most clubs and we certainly aren't going to get relegated. We have a base to build on for the future and thats why when we lose at Wolves I get irritated but it doesn't ruin my weekends like losing at Crewe or Rochdale used to do

Do you know that yesterday was the 4th anniversary of us getting battered 0-3 at Crewe,one of the darkest days following United since relegation to Division 4,that's why I ain't getting upset about losing at moneybags Wolves.
