I usually err on the side of caution, and really don't like to get carried away getting giddy with stuff.

However, I've seen us smash 9 teams, arguably 11, and seen and heard some fantastic football. The way we play is just too much for opposition teams.

So I'm sticking my neck out now and saying if we win on Friday I will be confident of promotion this season.

For me this is the next and last acid test.

While maybe not as confident of promotion if we win it will be a big bloody win and should leave 22 other teams in the league that we are a force to be reckoned with.

I think we’ll come undone in a few of the return fixtures as teams will have worked out how we play but trust Wilder to change it up and find a way.

100%
Boro played us off the park for 45min and we should have got a point, and Cardiff beat us comfortably but it was early in the season. Other than that weve looked as slick as last year, if not better.
I dont believe there's 6 teams in this league better that us, and I think Wilder is taylor made for the play offs.

Leeds will just have had on off day and we will be very lucky, and our bubble will burst on Saturday, and we will drop down the league like a stone and Wendy will get promoted and win the league with 101 points, and.................................HAHAHAHAHAHAHA......

We should have had a pen at Cardiff at 0-0. Score that and the game would have been very different

This is what happened half way through last season. Teams worked us out and made us play direct, soon after we signed Hanson and didn’t lose a game since he played his first game.

Working out how they play is one thing, stopping it is another entirely. Every team in the division will know how United play, with scouting and ProZone and God knows what else. As good as the tactics and system are, they’re no great secret. The beauty is in how well they’re planned, and then executed.

Eh? So following this logic teams that start we’ll have poor 2nd half of season?

One game at a time and all that but it really does feel like it could happen again. The daft thing is that I am not nearly as desperate to get promotion from this league as I was from league 1. Once the PL cash kicks in all sense of proportion and comnon sense seems to go out of the window. Maybe we could do it differently though, maybe?
In any case I think we will have a better idea of where we will finish once we have got Christmas out of the way. By then we will have played Villa, Fulham, Brizzle and Preston who are the only teams we are yet to play who worry me, a little anyway.

How do you play against a team who plays the way we do? The only way I can see it is by leaving 2/3 players up the pitch so our defenders don’t venture up. I can’t see teams taking that risk, as I still think we would take the gamble and push up looking for a goal.

Cuatiously agree with the OP here. I've been refusing to believe that we can achieve the (pre-season) impossible, and have been purely content with picking up points and outplaying teams as we have been.

BUT...if we go away in a 4th vs 3rd clash on Friday and come away with 3 points, I think I'll start to believe that we really could achieve something truly historic. Right now I'd take a draw if offered...but come 10pm on Friday I hope more than anything to be walking back to my car loudly and proudly singing "We're Sheff United, we're top of the league."

Can't fucking wait.

Precisely that.

Teams also just can’t cope with the sheer number of men we get forward. We often go down the flanks, but when we do we will have one central midfielder (Coutts of Fleck) depending on which side we are attacking, Duffy, the wing back and one of the centre halves. Teams just can’t defend against that number of options and when we have centre halves like O’Connell who are so good on the ball, teams don’t know which men to pick up and which to allow space as they are all dangerous.

I must admit, I’m quite surprised we aren’t conceding more, especially at home, given how we play but that is testament to how well drilled and hard working the team are.

i'm usually very pessimistic, however i actually believe we will come very close regardless of what happens friday purely because of the way we have been dominating teams, people often talk about red n white tinted specs, and yes i love the blades, but if i was a neutral and i re watched all our games so far this season i would be legging it to the bookies and sticking any spare cash i had on us going up, we do look better than any side in this division, and i'll include the top 2 in that, we play a style no one else i have seen comes close too, yes we will lose a few because of that attacking intent but i honestly believe we will win enough to do it

That’s not my logic at all. I’m just saying more and more teams may come to Bramall Lane for a point & shut up shop - a bit like Norwich did but they got all 3!

Agreed. I didn’t want to mention Hanson cos I get slated every time I mention him! (He did do a fantastic job for us at the perfect time)

The difference here is between confident and believing it could happen.
Right now i'm still in the latter camp, and won't be 'confident we'll get promoted' until we're solidly in the top 2 come, say, March.

We still have many, many difficult games left in this league, as others have mentioned. Villa, Preston look dangerous and we shouldn't discount teams like Millwall as well, who have pulled off some excellent results, and have the type of approach which could cause us problems.

There is a chance we could get promoted if we lose on Friday.

I hope If we do win our fans don’t go posting pictures of league table all over like Leeds did when they went top in September.

If we win Friday we are 3 more points towards safety.
Why the Hell not?

Sorry - I don't buy this "when teams work us out" - teams ALREADY know how we play as they all have TV and scouts.

We play in a style that other teams can't live with - it's adventurous but controlled and high press ( I believe started by Southampton a few years....was it Pochetino?) and is unplayable how we do it and when we do it. Teams have played all sorts of formations this season already and it doesn't work because we also change to counteract it - we did this loads last season too, mainly when we were losing or drawing. We have perfected 3-4-1-2 and the variations of it with players like Basham on field or very clever substitutions during a game.

Go and look at Joao's goal to make it 2-2 at the sty. We tried high press and we got done because we had just changed formation, Wednesday produced some rare skill in midfield on the day and Brooks switched off temporarily. That was a mistake in that game but these mistakes are plugged in subsequent games. The only time we've been really done in a game is at boro between 15 and 45 minutes. Forest didn't do us and Norwich didn't do us too - they scored a good goal (but we were pushing up) and then shut shop up. Yet another lesson that hopefully we learnt from as we go through the season.

We will lose games and we might lose to Leeds (similar to Forest) but what is certain, we will push on when needed and press when needed as the players seem to know instinctively when to do it. Our tactics have changed from last season, but we are using lessons learned from that season and adjusting accordingly.

We are getting better as each week goes on, because we are coached well and we are learning lessons. We made Reading and particularly Aluko look right numpties on Saturday - this was a team 1 kick away from the Prem last season.

The thing is, every time a team work out a system to beat us, or threaten us, CW and AK learn from it and find a way to combat it. They learn and learn well. The team listen and implement what they are told and everyone buys into it whole heartedly. That’s why we are doing so well at the moment and, hopefully, for the rest of the season.
