It only really works when we have Callum harassing the defence behind a Bamford or Moore type.

We don’t even have a back up for him at the moment really.

So what does that leave us? I’m going to assume we get another centre back. For now let’s say Kiching, as he’s the latest name. I’m going to discount Seriki for now also.

4-3-3:
Cooper
(Davies)

Choudhury Tanganga Kiching McCallum
(Doherty) (Baptiste) (McGuinness) (RND)

Peck Phillips Rothwell
(Arblaster) (Riedewald) (Burrows)

Donovan Bamford Brereton-Diaz
(Chong) (Cannon) (Oné)

+ Campbell, Shackleton.

4-4-2:
Cooper
(Davies)

Choudhury Tanganga Kiching McCallum
(Doherty) (Baptiste)(McGuinness) (Burrows)

Donovan Peck Phillips Brereton-Diaz
(Chong) (Arblaster) (Riedewald) (Rothwell)

Bamford Cannon
(Oné) (Campbell)

+ RND, Shackleton

3-5-2:
Cooper
(Davies)

Tanganga Kiching McCallum
(Doherty) (McGuinness) (Baptiste)

Hamza Peck Phillips Arblaster Burrows
(Donovan) (Chong)(Riedewald)(Roth) (RND)

Bamford Brereton-Diaz
(Oné) (Cannon)

+ Shackleton, Campbell

3-4-3:
Cooper
(Davies)

Tanganga Kiching McCallum
(Doherty) (McGuinness) (Baptiste)

Hamza Peck Phillips Burrows
(Shack) (Arblaster) (Riedewald) (RND)

Donovan Bamford Brereton-Diaz
(Chong) (Cannon) (Oné)

Just for me, as much as I don’t mind 3-5-2 it seems luckin if you don’t have Seriki and I don’t like to rely on Shackleton at all. You could possibly level the same criticism at 3-4-3.

I’m not against 4-3-3 as a solution, asking Peck and Arblaster to push on though I don’t mid the idea of Burrows left of a three man midfield. It does mean we sit Cannon out and that one of your expensive assets benched. I’d probably go with this nonetheless. It still allows BBD and Donovan to do what they’re supposed to and it gets Burrows in the team potentially.

I can however imagine 4-4-2 will win out. But away I can also see a very defensive 5 at the back as we did in.

Thoughts? Considerations? Unless of course we get another 10 in, but it’s late.

Yep, agreed that it will a tight season this one with the loss of Cal, only attacking spark we have left at the club.
4-3-3 is the only one that works with the players currently available. We don't have the wing backs to play a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, until Seriki is fit of course. The 4-4-2 is also a no-no with the strikers we have as none of them can drop in behind the main striker to help the midfield which gets overrun.

If O'Hare goes I'd be surprised if we played anything other than 4-4-2, as it would suit the players best.

Kitching (latest name)/Tanganga/McGuinness/Baptiste as options for 2 CB's in a back 4.

Burrows or McCallum at LB for another attacking option, or RND if we need someone a bit more defensive minded at LB.

Cannon plays better alongside another ST.

Jairo/Phillips/Rothwell + Peck/Arblaster would be the CM pairings.

Donovan on the right and BBD on the left.

Agree that 4-3-3/4-5-1 is the play for us if O’Hare does leave but we really need to sign a genuine winger or two.

Agreed. Team full of defensive midfielders and wingbacks.
I’ve said will wait until No ember and I stand by that but looking at what we have we need to get rid for whatever we can get and start again with a different philosophy and probably unknown kids. Can’t see Wilder being able to manipulate this lot into anything other than turgid defeat with hopefully a decent number of draws. Just doesn’t seem to be any toothpaste left to squeeze out of the tube.

Always liked 433 and as long as we see 3 attackers high up the pitch and not traditional wingers.

Riedewald sat in dm (or HC, when seriki is back)

With phillips and peck slightly more advanced as box to box.

433 with Phillips or Reidewald (when the former is unavailable) as the anchor.

Not much else suits us with this current squad, potentially could switch to a back 3 again when Seriki is fit

Surely has to be this.

The lack of number 10 is a major concern as to where the goals / assists are going to come from in the midfield but at least that should give us some form of control.

Donovan / Chong to rotate off the right, and BBD/Oné off the left.

We need to give up on this awful 442, gerritforward we’re playing at the minute. Cannon is the only player that benefits from it & he isn’t worth sacrificing the whole team for (unlike for example, Gus was).

If we're going 4-3-3 with a flat 3 to make use of the counterattack, it could suit the likes of BBD and Donovan, especially BBD as he's good on the counter.

----------------------Cooper
Hamza-Tanganga-Kitching-McCallum
------Peck----Reidewald----Arblaster
Donovan------------Bamford-------------BBD

If O'Hare stays (same thing used to happen with Gus last 2 summer deadline days and he stayed) you play him as an 8 instead of Arblaster and just tell him to get forward when he can and contribute goals/assists.

If he goes, you just tell one of Peck/Arblaster to do the same thing, we played with a flat 3 midfield without a 10 in 19/20 PL season and a good chunk of our goals that season came from Fleck and Lundstram.

We need Harry Bassett back we won’t have any ‘luxury’players perhaps long ball with deep crosses, it could be our rock and roll football 😂

Champers, as fond as I am of you... I'm just not where you are, yet.

Going by the change curve...

I'm somewhere between Anger and Depression to the O'Hare news, so far. I'm nowhere near to the experimentation stage and thinking about possible solutions with hope. That can get to fuck.

Where’s the Apathy stage…?

about right that formation except i think philips will be one of the 3 in midfield and will be the one to drop in when our full backs venture over the halfway line

I do think that selling CO'H will massively hobble any ambitions we have of a top half finish.

We're playing bad enough football as it is at the moment but without a dynamic ball winner and person with quick feet running at oppositions, who do we have now having lost both Coventry acquisitions who between them made something of a difference? BBD is (to me) a spent force, Donovan is as yet untried and Bamford is getting on a bit and only as good as his supply line is. And don't even mention Cannon. The fact that we've not managed to ditch him this time out is testimony to how garbage he actually is.

Another shit transfer window for Sheffield United. One of too many in the past twenty years.

3-5-2 beckons with One and Bamford up top as target men.

True, the way I see is it's either Phillips or Jairo for that CDM role who hangs back to protect the CB's, and right now Jairo is probably more match fit than Phillips.

Hopefully if we can slowly build his fitness up over a few matches as a sub he might be in a position to start regularly.

Even if it's Phillips starting for first hour and then Jairo off the bench, and rotate when needed for 3 game weeks.

With the number and quality of midfielders we have, we should be playing either 433 (with two 6s), or 532. We've got to lean into our strengths. O'Hare will be a loss for sure, but if we can get Arblaster/Peck/Rothwell playing further forward as sixes we can manage it. Rothwell and Arblaster can pick a pass, and Peck gives us the legs. Phillips can play as a 6 too if we get into a pinch.

Everyone fit I'd be happy enough with:

Seriki-Tanganga-Kitching-McCallum
--------------Phillips------------------
---------Peck-----Arblaster
Donovan--------------------BBD-----
--------------Bamford-----------------

Or

----Doherty--Tanganga--Kitching---
Seriki---------Phillips--------Burrows
---------Peck--------Arblaster-------
-------Bamford-----Cannon----------

Cycle thes two formations depending on the opponent. I'd also go for the in-form striker along side Bamford in 352, who I really hope becomes One.

Given we’ve sold all our players that can play wide and replaced them with midfielders and defenders I think a move back to 5-3-2 was always on the cards. I don’t think it’s a coincidence we’ve seen it in a couple of games already.

Could potentially line up a couple of ways

Cooper
Seriki - Tanganga - McGuinness - Kitching - Burrows
Phillips - Arblaster
Peck
Bamford - BBD

We’ve got cover at RB with Doherty, cover at LB with McCallum, cover at CB with Baptiste and RND, Reidewald, Choudhary & Shackleton for CM and Campbell & One for forwards.

As long as we can get good fees for O’Hare & Cannon I’d like to see us reinvest that in some players in the 23-25 age bracket that can develop

Pretty clear, we aren't pumping any real investment cash into purchases, more 'keeping the club running' and bringing in out-of-favours and orphans from other better placed clubs.

I mean, surely you can see with the great acquisitions we've made recently like Grbic, Zatterstom, Nwachukwu, Caceres, Ukaki, Matos, Mee, Rothwell, Ings, Polendakov we're an ambitious, promotion-minded club with a great scouting network destined to tear the division up this year and leave the opposition floundering wherever we go ...

yes the defensive midfielder role is between philips and reidewald and personally i like your suggestion of philips for 60/65 mins then reidewald hes the better quality player its the other 2 midfield roles that concerns me the other 3 are very similar and have never liked peck and arblaster in same midfield
