You young whippersnappers...what you have to remember is that the team that got relegated to the 4th were dire, but in horrid parallels to today the individual players seemed better than the feeble performances they turned in (Conroy, Casey, Garner, Houston, Tibbott, Trusson, Matthews, Givens, Charles, Hatton, Ryan, Neville, I've got the Walsall program in front of me). There was more than a hint of Martin Peters doing a David Weir, but there we were, in the basement. Porterfield was the bright young up and coming at Rotherham, we promptly nicked him off them over the summer, when he bought Edwards, Morris and Stan the man. That next season was the best to be a Blade that I've ever had. Sure he lost the plot a bit after a few years but I have no idea what might have become of us without his brilliant handling of the situation. Big respect and RIP clubfoot.
Seven of that team played for Porterfield when we were back in the third.

It was a great season record points and goals scored. Beating Peterborough 4-0 home and away was the highlight along with Keith Edwards goal contest with Craig Madden at Bury, not sure if they scored the same goals in the end. Why was Porterfield called clubfoot?

The only managers I don't think I ever heard us shout 'so and so Out' to are Kendall, Spackman, Thompson, Bruce, Speed, Adams and Clough. Quite a few I suppose, but some weren't there long enough for us to want them out!
In 1994/95 season there were unpleasant infighting between pro and anti Bassett supporters

Yes the team was Burridge, Thompson, Bolton, Arnott, Eckhardt, McNaught, Morris, Edwards, Philliskirk, Walshaw,, Frain. Scorers were Morris (pen), Frain and Walshaw
I think Phil Thompson was the ultimate past it player we have signed. He made Dean Hammond seem like Linford Christie!! I don't know if he didn't like his time at Bramall Lane but if I remember rightly he never seemed to like us when he was doing commentary.

Not sure, I had a piggy mate who always called him that so I did - it could have come from there! I'll get me coat :)

Yep he just fouled people as he'd lost his pace.

Yes, you have it spot on

We finished 6th that season, not sure if we were in same place when Porterfield got the sack with 9 games left to play (we won 3, drew 3 and lost 3 in the remaining games)

7th actually :-) our highest league position since we had been relegated from D1 10 years before.

Thought Bassett deserved a tad more respect, but sensed that the new regime wanted their own man.
I was told that early in the 1995/96 season some of the players laughed at Bassett when he was shouting in training sessions.

Steve Charles and I think Neville came back on loan.

Neville was never on loan, but he was the regular right winger that season until Morris signed in Feb and then was the usual sub.

Edit: sorry you're referring to 82-3. Charles played a number of games whilst Neville was on loan at Exeter all season and didn't play at all.

I think he may have played for us the season after. I'm fairly sure I saw him play for us and I didn't start going until 82 when we were back in the third. Could be wrong though as it's long time ago.

Similarly I remember seeing Steve Charles play and I'm sure it was more than just the cup games.

Just checked, yes, Charles did play a number of games. Thought he moved to Wrexham in summer 1982. Sorry BushBlade

Isn't it ironic that Porterfield, Bassett and Warnock cop for some dogs abuse off some of our fans and as someone mentioned earlier shithouses like Bruce,Thomson, Spackman etc never get half the abuse and yet did the square root of fuck all for us!!!
Those first ten games under Nigel Spackman saw us play the best football I've seen United play. That opening match against Sunderland was fantastic, Borbokis was unstoppable. Then we sold Deane and Fjotoft and it went downhill from there.

Neville signed in Oct 1980 from Exeter and played in 80-1 and 81-2. He was on loan at Exeter all season in 82-3 and signed permanently for them in summer 83. His last game for United was in April 1982 in the 4th,

Charles played about half the league games in 82-3.

Spackman felt lost when Willie Donnachie joined Joe Royle at Man City

Yes, I'm wondering if I saw him play against us and I'm getting confused.

I once walked past Steve Charles at Limb Valley, near Whirlow Park. Not relevant to your discussion I know but a chance for me to name drop!

He scored the equaliser for Exeter at the Lane in Nov 83 (my 17th birthday) after we were 2-0 up after Philliskirk played a ridiculous back pass from the half way line that Neville intercepted.
