Ian Porterfield

I was a season ticket holder then and remember it well. The fans drove it out, which shows how much fans know.

As I have said before, anyone who thinks we are too critical now would not have believed what it was like that season.

It's bizarre in the sense that we put with Harry Haslam for 3 years despite relegation from the second tier for the first time ever and then a mid table position in Division 3 (and the BDM). I started going regularly at the start of 80-1 and there were chants of "only one happy Harry" at the start of that season and there was only pressure for him to go as I recall at the Brentford game on 27th Dec, after we had faded into mid table after a good start. He then resigned in mid Jan 81.

From what memory tells me, Porterfield got sacked after a 5-2 home defeat against Norwich. I seem to remember Keith Edwards scoring a screamer that day as well.

Must be because I was only 8 but I can't remember how bad it was ?

Things like:

"Porterfield Out!" Heard in October and then regularly after our good November run ended

Booing of the team on more than one occasion after it won games

Car park demo after the Norwich game

A surreal passage in the Millwall game after they went 3-0 up: a number of people cheered Millwall's passing and booed when we got the ball, and there was even some scattered booing when Eckhardt scored our late consolation.

People going to the front of the South Stand and banging on the dugout.

Interesting times!

Porterfield had spent heavily in his 5 years as our manager. The 1985-86 team were nicknamed "Dad's Army" and many were on high wages. The fans knew that most of the players would be worthless at the end of their contracts. We got into a financial mess after that and we were lucky that Bassett was available at the right time. He signed a lot of players on low wages, some became a lot of value to the club

It's a good job the club learns from its mistakes.

I don't recall the fans saying "bloody Porterfield, he has signed all these old men with no resale value". I think Porterfield was a victim of his own success. Two promotions and challenging for promotion from D2 made expectations sky high and when we fell away from promotion, he was toast.

Brealey pretty much pulled the plug financially in 1984. Porterfield wasn't allowed to spend any money after we got promoted that year . If I recall correctly, the only signings where we paid a fee from then until March 86 were for Black (£2000), Peattie (£500), Burridge (£10K), McNaught (£15K), Lewington (£30K) and Wigley (£75,000) - a grand total of £142,500 - more and made up for by the sale of Cockerill for £225,000.

Contrast with the previous 3 seasons where we had spent around £750,000 for Waugh, Richardson, McAlle, Edwards, Morris, Curran, Young, Heffernan, Stancliffe and Cockerill.

He scored the best goal I have ever seen a Blades player score, an overhead kick from the edge of the area against Oxford (or possibly Orient).
Better than Edwards' dummy? (And I don't mean the one he regularly spits out on RS)

What about the wages??? The European Cup winners were definitely not on low wages!

That was another great goal. The Alan Young overhead kick has always stuck in my mind though. Mind you there was a month when Mike Lake became Pele and scored some fantastic long range goals.

Think it was v Oxford United.
3-2 - March 19, 1983.
Bramall Lane End.

Sure that Silent will have all the info.
I was a part-timer between 1979 and 1988 due to playing football and other things. Dont think I was at that match. Not sure if 1980-81 or 1982-83 were the lowest in the number of matches I attended for the season

We won't mention 80/81.
You missed NOTHING worth thinking about.

That was my first season! The first half of the season we were alright, until we started to sink. I can recall us scoring a great goal against Rotherham,John Moore I think

Anyway, yer dredging the bottom of my memory bank now!!

I confused Tony Moore, the greatest right back in history with John Moore, a former Health Secretary in the Thatcher Government, a useless right winger!

Remember the general feeling was he couldn't hack it.
