I was a season ticket holder then and remember it well. The fans drove it out, which shows how much fans know.
As I have said before, anyone who thinks we are too critical now would not have believed what it was like that season.

Must be because I was only 8 but I can't remember how bad it was ?
Porterfield had spent heavily in his 5 years as our manager. The 1985-86 team were nicknamed "Dad's Army" and many were on high wages. The fans knew that most of the players would be worthless at the end of their contracts. We got into a financial mess after that and we were lucky that Bassett was available at the right time. He signed a lot of players on low wages, some became a lot of value to the clubI was a season ticket holder then and remember it well. The fans drove it out, which shows how much fans know.
It's a good job the club learns from its mistakes.Porterfield had spent heavily in his 5 years as our manager. The 1985-86 team were nicknamed "Dad's Army" and many were on high wages. He scored the best goal I have ever seen a Blades player score, an overhead kick from the edge of the area against Oxford (or possibly Orient).Did Alan Young once score for us then had to go in goal? Maybe even saved a penalty?
Better than Edwards' dummy? (And I don't mean the one he regularly spits out on RS)He scored the best goal I have ever seen a Blades player score, an overhead kick from the edge of the area against Oxford (or possibly Orient).
What about the wages??? The European Cup winners were definitely not on low wages!Brealey pretty much pulled the plug financially in 1984. Porterfield wasn't allowed to spend any money after we got promoted that year . If I recall correctly, the only signings where we paid a fee from then until March 86 were for Black (£2000), Peattie (£500), Burridge (£10K), McNaught (£15K), Lewington (£30K) and Wigley (£75,000) - a grand total of £142,500 - more and made up for by the sale of Cockerill for £225,000.

That was another great goal. The Alan Young overhead kick has always stuck in my mind though. Mind you there was a month when Mike Lake became Pele and scored some fantastic long range goals.Better than Edwards' dummy? (And I don't mean the one he regularly spits out on RS)

I was a part-timer between 1979 and 1988 due to playing football and other things. Dont think I was at that match. Not sure if 1980-81 or 1982-83 were the lowest in the number of matches I attended for the seasonThink it was v Oxford United.
3-2 - March 19, 1983.
Bramall Lane End.
Sure that Silent will have all the info.
What a cracker by Whitehouse at the end!
That's Dane.
What a player.
For me, that's one of ours who deserves never to be forgotten.
Blade.

I don't recall the fans saying "bloody Porterfield, he has signed all these old men with no resale value". I think Porterfield was a victim of his own success. Two promotions and challenging for promotion from D2 made expectations sky high and when we fell away from promotion, he was toast.

Contrast with the previous 3 seasons where we had spent around £750,000 for Waugh, Richardson, McAlle, Edwards, Morris, Curran, Young, Heffernan, Stancliffe and Cockerill.
