Iain Turner and Kevin McDonald in on trial

Two very good players who I'd take in a shot.

Problem with Turner is that we'd have to get rid of Simmo first.

Would we? Turner is one of those perennial loanees, and is without a club. If we were considering Duke as back-up to Simmo, I'd have thought Turner would be similar in cost.

I thought the consensus was that we couldn't move for Duke until Simmo had gone?

Not sure that is necessarily the case - particularly given Simmo's not been linked with anyone. If we get rid of 2 major wage earners elsewhere (eg. Ched and Monty) that presumably frees up cash to bring others in across the squad.

What sort of midfielder is McDonald? Can't remember him from past matches.

I've asked on 365 what went wrong, but from memory he's a tall central player who has a good shot and gets stuck in. May be wrong though.

Last tall central midfielder I remember us having of that ilk was Jon Jo O'Toole so that should temper my excitement...

Looking at some past posts about McDonald apparently he was never the same after getting substituted in the Prem and he left the ground to get wankered at half time.

The general view seems to be that he's got lots of ability, but needs someone to sort his attitude out.

This seems to sum him up...

Hello Houso.

The basic answer is attitude.

In our promotion season, he showed glimpses that he had all the ability in terms of passing and holding on to the ball. Hi inability to track back looked like a bit of naivety that could be knocked out of him in time.

It wasn't, it was pure laziness and what looked like a distinct lack of fitness/love of ale.

Our fans were crying out for him to get a run of games though as he has the ability, and Brian Laws gave him that opportunity in the PL. Then, when we were getting dicked by Man City at home, he was subbed at half time and f**ked straight off down the pub

Was never really going to get a chance after that, but his loan spells suggeat he still hasn't sorted his attitude out.

Biggest blatant waste of talent I have seen at Burnley possibly. What a dickhead.

Still, if you have room for a lazy get in the middle of the park, he can pass a ball

If a player has ability you can change his attitude: On the other hand a player might have the best attitude in town but you can't give him what the Good Lord has denied him.

So have Wilsons short listed targets all gone elsewhere then if we are looking at players doing the trial circuit?

Wasn't McDonald at Donny training last week?

Wasn't McDonald at Donny training last week?

Is it not a case of both
a) seeing if we can find more players who are available cheap, in addition to those targets... and
b) having backups in place should the deals fall through or we not get rid of Chedwyn

And McDonald has been training with Donny, obviously didn't get an offer if he's coming here for a trial.

Out of interest, does Wilson have a reputation for getting players with attitude problems back on track?

McDonald is only 22. Might be a good addition. Cannot really say I have seen much of him but I always prefer us to be looking at younger players than the old hasbeens. Is McDonald the one who had a bad injury and was sent to Scunthorpe on loan to get his fitness back? Or was he just sent there because he was poor?

Kevin McDonald is/was a very, very good young player, potentially top class, but it all seems to have to pot in the last year so, if he gets his head sorted he could be the outstanding signing of any League One side this season.

The following link is from 2009 when he had just signed for Burnley and was looking at ease in the Premiership. http://www.hmfckickback.co.uk/index.php?/topic/64508-kevin-mcdonald-nhc/

However, he pretty much burned his bridges at Burnley by storming off to the pub during the game after being subbed at half-time in a match v Man City!!!!

Iain Turner on the other hand is pretty dire in my opinion, from what I can remember he has a Simonsenesque ability to throw the ball in his own net.

Forgot to say, this seems to be another example of Danny Wilson showing himself to be very alert when it comes to identifying potential talent at a sensible price.

Quote from DW in today's YP - he's clearly not looking to move Simmo on if Turner is signed:

"Both ends of the pitch were a problem for us last season,” said Wilson. “The best place to start addressing that is at the back and competition between two experienced goalkeepers can only help.”

John Joe O'Toole, not heard that name for a while....
Whatever happened to him? I thought he had a lot to give and never shirked a challenge.

He went to Colchester and got a serious knee injury. I think he made his comeback near the end of the last season.

It's like the old boxing adage isn't it? A crap big'un will always beat a crap little'un.

Iain Turner has signed a one-year deal with Preston (BBC Sport)

Yes, tall mediocrity will always get the better of short mediocrity.

May I ask my esteemed colleague why a Mr J Ertl has been unable to wrestle the role from either the Maestro or Elpiton then?

Elpiton lost his place to his more able twin Squinnio in the last third of the season. The latter actually rose above the mediocre now and then.

As for The Maestro, I am drawn to the inevitable conclusion that he has a condition in his unconscionably lucrative contract to the effect that his gross ineptitude must be a permanent feature in our team. Or perhaps he has embarrassing photographs of our last few managers in a ménage a cinq?
