A sword, a big chain, old rattles...Millwall never went that tooled up.

I don't know about tooled up, but they looked tanked up!
What did he tell you about the match?
The photo of Mick Jones calls to mind a similar one taken in September, 1964, from exactly the same place (from behind and through the nets at the Bramall Lane end) of Mick scoring against Birmingham. Significant for me because it was the first game I ever attended. The photo was on a website called Devoted To Sport which had a random selection of old images that you could have printed on paperweights and mugs and things but the site has disappeared now. I had the photo as my screensaver on an old computer but I somehow lost it. If anyone has the image in question, I'd pay good money for a copy.

My grandad was there, aged about 32. He said pretty much the same. Something like 'ee, it were busy'.Not much! That there was a right crush, that he was on the Kop and couldn't see much.
Anyone remember the team just prior to this great side? I haven't googled or looked at programmes so I'm just going from memory as it was my first United side. It was something like:OP pics was the game with 'the' Best goal, which to be honest, ranks with Michael Owen's vs Argentina as one of the best goals I have ever seen. To be able to pick the ball up, see the route and just accelerate through the gears (and he passed Hockey so deftly that you could almost see Trev's face going 'shit!') and then cross-chip-shoot across an advancing John Hope (no small bloke) and find the far corner in front of the defenders is still something I am amazed at. Best was an incredible player ... and I think only Lionel Messi is even close to that skill and ability.
Couple of other points - the 'standard' team as I remember was (ish)
------------------ Hope --------------
-- Badger --------------- Hemsley --
-------------- Colquohn ---------------
------- Flynn ------------ Hockey ----
Woodward --- Currie --- Scullion --
---------------- Dearden ----------------
Which, to me, seems like one superb setup. The engines of the team, Flynn and Hockey working with the marauding Eddie C who would basically break up any advance and drop between the two full backs to sweep.
And Jim Bone was a good wing attacker for Norwich, but Arthur Shitpipe for us. I can't remember such an underwhelming transfer, after the anticipation.

The only match with our line up being like that was in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat at L**ds in the 6th round of the FA Cup in March 1968. Tony Wagstaff played only 2 league and 2 cup matches that seasonAnyone remember the team just prior to this great side? I haven't googled or looked at programmes so I'm just going from memory as it was my first United side. It was something like:
Hodgy
Badger
Shaw(B)
Munks
Mallender
Barlow
Woody
Carlin
Addison
Wagstaff(T)
Reece
Probably a couple of mistkes but that's how I remember it.
I remember Reece hitting the bar in that match. Also remember being at Vicarage Rd in 3rd round (always lived in London) and not knowing who Bob Widdowson was. The 4th Rd against Blackpool was my first ever visit to the Lane .The only match with our line up being like that was in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat at L**ds in the 6th round of the FA Cup in March 1968. Probably TC ought to be in the side instead of Tony Wagstaff and maybe Mick Hill instead of Colin Addison.
Did you think Hill was better than Addison?
Sold him in October 1969No. I rated Addison, probably more in midfield than as a striker.
SLB was listing the team that preceded that great early 1970's side hence the reason I put forward Hill's name. Can't remember when we sold Hill but he obviously featured in that 1968 relegation season. (Scored when Woody went in goal September 1967)
Sold him in October 1969
Tony Wagstaff was the first sub to come on for us in Sept 1965 at Fulham replacing the injured Birchenall (tactical substitutions werent allowed then)Silent, wasn't one of the Wagstaffs our first substitute, or is my memory playing up again?
