How (them lot) see us now...

I’m in my early 50’s and when I was a kid in the 70’s, my grandad often said to me it’s crazy to imagine United in the 2nd division because at that point we’d spent almost our entire history in the top flight. He said United were always seen as a natural top flight club,

Another weird but interesting fact is United have now spent 42 years in the 2nd division/ championship
And in this division we’ve had a top 10 finish on 80% of the time. No wonder, our fans expect us to have a good season, historically we’re nearly always involved in a promotion challenge in this division.

It's a generational thing in many ways. No Wednesday fan under 35 has ever seen them in the top flight as a paying adult. A 35 year old today would have been in school the last time Wednesday were in the Premiership. It's an astonishing amount of time when you think about it. Especially when so many of them around that age talk as if they fully remember the glory days. I certainly wouldn't class myself as young but my memories of United and Wednesday both being in the top flight are extremely hazy. I think I'd just left Primary School when we went down under Bassett.

The older generation of fans grew up on top flight football. People below 35 can't realistically say they are used to watching United or Wednesday in the top division.

That’s a load of bollocks Roy, I’m 35 and I’ve seen all the footage on Betamax.

They’re not massive. They’re not bigger than most of the clubs they perpetuate to be bigger than.

Are they bigger than us? Honestly yes. Does it matter? Does it fuck.
What's your definition of bigger then?

In the 80s when we were garbage they probably enticed more fans through the door.

Can't be said now though.

This one tickles me. Those of us who live in the area know it’s a total and typical pig lie as all alcohol is in the fridges in front of the tills or behind the tills but in reality I just don’t get point of the post. I mean.... why blatantly lie about something that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic anyway?
It sums some of them up perfectly
:rolleyes::D

This is the problem. All these 30 something Wednesday fans who talk about them winning the League Cup only have old videos as evidence. If they can fake the moon landings , they can fake Wednesday winning the League Cup.

Some good points made there Roygbiv, I'm 50 and have been watching United since 1975, so in my lifetime watching them we've had 6 years in the top flight out of 44 (3 of those 6 were relegation seasons). So yes in my lifetime the vast majority have been as a top end second tier club, however for me, with what I was brought up on and I know my United history, the size of the club and the size of our city we should be doing much, much better as a club. I personally blame consecutive piss poor Chairman and boards at the Lane and that we should look at a club like Leicester as similar size but have won cups, campaigns in Europe and are generally holding their own in the top flight as the benchmark as to be where we should be.

As for those so called Blades saying Wednesday are the bigger club, don't take this personally but please f** off, go and look at the history of both clubs and see that there is f*** all in it. It's just about 50/50 when we've been in the ascendancy and had the crowds to match, and vice-versa. Also, note that any stands or developments at the Lane we've paid for ourselves, more often than not Wednesday have had handouts to pay for theirs.

It's funny the whole cup final thing with Rotherham. Aside from the fact they celebrated as if they'd won one, our game is their Cup final.

They might not say it outright but hoping to derail our promotion is all they have left to salvage a season. So it all comes down to one game being the one that can salvage their season. If that's not a cup final, I don't know what is.

What I find quite pathetic about them is that at least when we were the poorer neighbours, we we're plucky and had a good. Their non-football approach the last two games has been unbelievable. Like a non-league team player a higher level team and just parking the bus.

Nice and classy. Keep it up. :D
I see the masculinity is fragile in this one.

‘How dare he think Wednesday are a bigger club than United, must be a fucking pig, pig cunt, rolling in muck ha ha ha, reyt funny me love, come here look what I’ve just said on this Blades forum here”

I refer you to post #36. Read and reread - again and again.

You seem somewhat agitated and I'm interested to see you bring in masculinity to a post. Has yours been bruised in some way?

Takes a lot more than that to agitate me mate, whereas it seems simply referring to a football club being bigger than another really gets your goat.

Nah. Stupidity does. As does unwarranted aggression and recently you've managed to pick a few fights on this forum which just aren't needed. Keep it up "chief". I can't be bothered. I disagree with your opinion and your reasoning. That's about it. No other comment needed. X

If being called chief is aggressive to you I think you need to get out more x

They've won 1 poxy rumblelows cup in 85 years. They got bigger gates after WW2 as the population of sheffield moved to the new estates at parson crosars shiregreen fox hill wadsley to re house those bombed out more centrally.
The overall league record we blind them as we have been more consistent. When the owls are poor they are very poor.
In 100 years theyve won 1 derby double
It's 1958 since they last finished above us in this division. They have been relegated 3 more times than us . No owls fan under 70 has seen them be top of any division after 10 games for 70 years.
They hold the record for being out of the top league longest for a sheffield club with 19 years and counting

This century they've won nearly a third less points than we have. We are the only sheffield team to average over 30k gates since that post war boom due to population movement
Wednesday 4 title wins like ours were in 28 games seasons pre 1930. Not really relevant to the modern game

Wow, I love stats like that! :)

This season yeah. But generally speaking they pull more fans than us, let’s not kid ourselves. We’ll end up as deluded as them.

A year or two prem stint could change everything though.
Correct to an extent, if their chairman had ticket prices at a fair price they'd have had 30k+ average in their two play off seasons

It goes back much further than this pal they thought they were bigger and better in the 60's after the sty got major rebuilding work in time for the World cup making it one of the best grounds in the country with 24,000 seats. A cup final appearance further lifted their status at a time when we were playing at a three sided ground with only seats in John st until the Bramall Lane stand opened adding 3000. No gifts from the FA to build at Bramall lane what we have is all our own work.
So you see these delusions of grandeur have been ingrained into them for generations, they have never earned anything hand outs from the FA, the Co-op bank and now the Dolphin killer. Some of their fans are now adults and have never yet seen them in the top flight, they are shite.

This touches on an important point: in my lifetime, they have always been the 'establishment' club not least by having the local council and latterly the FA right up their arse. I still hope that the Hillsborough inquiry fallout will lead to names being named concerning the outrageous stitch-up over their Safety Certificate. We were unfairly fucked over on planning applications for years. And latterly we had the shameful decision around the World Cup stadium bid. The net effect of this is undoubtedly to reinforce their delusions of grandeur.

There is no recent evidence to suggest Wednesday have bigger support than us, quite the contrary.
There is no evidence that Wednesday have a better Stadium than us, quite the contrary.
In terms of recent trophies: they won the league cup at a time when it had the same value as the JPT.
Historical trophies. United won the FA Cup 4 times when it was by far the biggest thing to win in English club football. Wednesday won it thee times. This is counteracted by them winning more league championships. Since Wednesday's relegation United have more titles, promotions and more time spent at the top of the second tier. The cap doffing on this thread is ludicrous.
