We had an attack at one point in the first half yesterday. It went down the right but at the same time, no fewer than four of our team steamed down the left, Enda, Johnson, Fleck and one other. The overload looked almost comical, but I’m now thinking perhaps I should have considered it one dimensional.

‘Beginning to wonder’ because I’d say to the neutral Wednesday are a ‘bigger club’ than us. Due to their League successes and the fact they’ve had European football. If that makes me a pig then shoot me.

Get a grip.

Being the ‘bigger club’ makes absolutely no difference by the way. I’d rather be better than bigger.

Does it make them a ‘big club’ no. Certainly not as big as they believe they are.

I’d rather be better than bigger as I’ve said several times. Wouldn’t you?

It is true that Wednesday have won more trophies than us and have a bigger stadium than us.

However, over the last quarter of a century they have won the same number of trophies as us. None.

Their stadium is bigger and I think it is fair to say it used to be better. It is still bigger, but is no longer better.

Historically they have had bigger attendances than us, often when in a lower division than us. However, this is no longer so clear cut.

Up until the 2007-8 season whenever both Sheffield clubs had been in the same division Wednesday had always had a bigger average attendance than us with one exception, the 1970-1 season.

However, from 2007-8 until the present season we have been in the same division as them 5 times (this season will be the 6th). In 4 out of those 5 seasons we have averaged more than them and barring the outbreak of another bubonic plague or something similarly cataclysmic, this season will make it 5 out of 6.

That is a sequence that has never happened before and whilst it is still far too early to say whether or not this indicates a shift in support between the two clubs, it is not just a one off.

Mind you I have always been quite happy for them to be seen and to see themselves as the bigger club. It means the pressure is always on them to out perform us. Because, after all, they should do. They are bigger. And if they don't, that suggests a certain level of incompetence.

So in your eye winning two or three more trophies makes them a bigger club. Do you see Blackburn as a bigger club?

Nobody says it’s a dick swinging contest, just picking you up on your claim of them being the bigger club.

You’re right on one thing though,most neutrals probably would say they were the bigger club. It’s what those assertions are base on which is the argument though. In their eyes they’ll be thinking of the Wednesday of the early nineties, about as relevant as the United side of the early Seventies.

The point I’m making is United are the bigger club now for the reasons I’ve already given. No it doesn’t matter but you brought it up so I’m making a comment on your comment.

The overall point I’m making is the size of a club isn’t and never has been static, otherwise we’d be talking about how can Notts County possibly be in danger of going out of the League.

It doesn’t bother me thinking Wednesday are (albeit slightly) bigger than us. If that bothers you that’s fine.

I’m not going to sit and argue about it. It makes no difference to me.
 
Bigger is irrelevant. United are just better, in the modern world, in the "here and now". Better ground, better players, better manager, better organisation, better funded. For those of us who feel it's important, United are in Sheffield, and United are "of" Sheffield. In the modern game, having an owner (Kev is still there), manager and team captain who are fans of the team and are from the team's town is probably unique, and something that Wendy can't, and probably won't ever, replicate. When United are winning, playing the way they can under Wilder, and the crowd is "on song", as it can still be at times, there's no finer place.
Bigger is irrelevant, Wendy are irrelevant. United are just better, in every way.
 
Bigger is near impossible to quantify when it's so close, in reality both clubs are very similar in size and stature, it's just one set of fans accept it for what it is and are mostly humble while the other lot think they are bigger than Man City and Chelsea.

Absolutely
If they'd won seven or eight league titles and half a dozen cups, a European pedigree and consistently averaged 10,000 more than us we couldn't and wouldn't argue

But they haven't achieved any of this, so a United fan agreeing with them is about as cringeworthy as it gets

I was sat in a pub with a mate of mine and a mate of his suddenly appeared
He was also a United fan

After talking football for a while he said "United naturally belong in the 2nd tier"

I said "Why, does a club that has spent more than half of its entire history in the top division naturally belong in the second tier"

He said "They just do"

I said "Where do Wendy belong in your opinion"
"Top flight he said"

I honestly didn't know whether to laugh at him or slit his throat with my beer bottle to put him out of his misery

I resisted both, I just asked him where he lived
"Grenoside" he said

It suddenly became clear that he had been brainwashed to become as deluded as them having to listen to it every day

They say this because they’ve been an absolute irrelevance for nearly 20 years now save for the play off final in 2016. They think fans of other clubs mentioning them in a “what the fuck ever happened to them” kind of way equates to a unanimous desire to see them back in the Premiership.

When I was growing up they were the better supported of the two clubs. They had a great spell in the 1990s which got them a lot of floating fans locally. Those days are long gone and most of those fairweather fans have long since fucked off or emerge on the odd occasion they have a big game.

They really are an odd set of fans seemingly immune to embarrassment. They don’t do the gallows humour and pessimism that you get amongst other sets of long suffering football fans....just a steadfast belief that they will eventually take their “rightful” place at English football’s top table (based on a couple of spells of moderate success many years ago). As yesterday’s “cup final” showed.....they never learn.
 
There is the perception that they're bigger.

They haven't actually won a division, any division, for 60 years (and counting)

It's necessary to acknowledge they have been 4 times Champion of England, as opposed to our once, but every one of those - either way - is now outside of living memory.

But we also have more FA Cup wins than they do.

They did win the League Cup relatively recently - well 28 years ago is recent to me, but not to lots of you.

They have had 66 seasons out of 116 in the top flight, we've had 61. Until 1990 we had actually had more years in the top flight than they did.

Yeah, "big" differences.

It goes back much further than this pal they thought they were bigger and better in the 60's after the sty got major rebuilding work in time for the World cup making it one of the best grounds in the country with 24,000 seats. A cup final appearance further lifted their status at a time when we were playing at a three sided ground with only seats in John st until the Bramall Lane stand opened adding 3000. No gifts from the FA to build at Bramall lane what we have is all our own work.
So you see these delusions of grandeur have been ingrained into them for generations, they have never earned anything hand outs from the FA, the Co-op bank and now the Dolphin killer. Some of their fans are now adults and have never yet seen them in the top flight, they are shite.

Our pork neighbors seem to have the same mindset as forest fans!!. They’ll always be the bigger club and it’s only a matter of time before they rule the premiership replacing Man City etc!!!. Fuck em. UTB
 
The single most repeated element throughout their posts are fear of us leaving them behind, and hatred of us just because they cannot accept the way the world is.

Even now, I rarely think of them as competitors, more a case of one last hurdle to overcome. None of which means I assume anything, after all, that would be far too piggy in it's mindset. No doubt they'll try their hardest, no doubt they'll consider it their fate to beat us. They've managed to intensify their appetite for delusion to such extremes that they've become extremely poor cousins to SUFC. No longer able to play football that's easy on the eye, they rejoice when they scrape a point off any team that, for the most part, just about manages to remain in this division. They're now part of football's also rans, accepting this will take several years, but eventually they will come to recognise that they're royally screwed and that no amount of waffle, bluster, or actual delusion will compensate for the ruination of their club. By that time Bruce will have been sacked for his job and another sad sack will be given the responsibility of saving them from another relegation.

They've got a major rebuilding job on their hands, yet they have an owner who won't spend the necessary money. I guess that makes the supporters the patsies for what will follow........a complete set of mugs who will moan but continue to cough up. They and Chansiri are made for one another.
 
10 Pigs sat in the pub at 4 pm, Pigs are at home that afternoon. All they can talk about is how massive they are, and how much bigger their crowds are.
Following week 10 Blades in the p.......?, well they were, oh no, I forgot, they’ve fucked off, United are at home. Effin pigs, Deluded C***S.

I’m in my early 50’s and when I was a kid in the 70’s, my grandad often said to me it’s crazy to imagine United in the 2nd division because at that point we’d spent almost our entire history in the top flight. He said United were always seen as a natural top flight club,

Another weird but interesting fact is United have now spent 42 years in the 2nd division/ championship
And in this division we’ve had a top 10 finish on 80% of the time. No wonder, our fans expect us to have a good season, historically we’re nearly always involved in a promotion challenge in this division. (4 out of every 5 seasons).
 
I think the "we are a big club" thing is a safety blanket for fans of many clubs. When things aren't going well you have to try and make yourself believe things will change so you over estimate how big your club is.

People say stuff like "well yeah we are shit but we are a big club , we get 25,000 and they only get 24,000" because it's the only thing they have at that time to cling on to. Our fans do similar at times when we have a bad result against someone like Bolton. Wednesday fans just take it further by grossly over estimating their fanbase and achievements.
