I don't think he was told he must sign Evans...however, as I stated above, Evan's return was on the cards long before Wilder came in.
I don't see who else but McCabe could be involved given the history.
The deal would have been put to Wilder, he's assessed it and given it the ok. ie: ultimately it was my decision.
P.S- Put i this way, I don't think Evans was top of Wilder's shopping list at the end of last season...before the season had ended in fact.
"The deal would have been put to Wilder..." is this what you mean by McCabe being involved? If this is the case it's perfectly plausible I agree, for me intimating McCabe was "involved" means it was more than just putting the deal to Wilder.
We won't know whether he was "Top" of Wilders shopping list or not If we assume he wasn't, buying him anyway was surely going to impact the budget available to purchase who may have been "Top". On that basis I can't see how McCabe would've been involved.
Wilder was in the strongest position a United manager has been in since, probably, Warnock got us to the PL. Given that and what he said in the interview do you think if he didn't want Evans he would be here?
I think most hope he will come good but not sure he will get the game time he needs to sharpen his activity. Clearly he does it in practice, but right now none of our strikers are 'on form.' Though we create chances we continue to miss most.
If he carries on ill have to get out the ban hammer.
I'd guess that when Wilder saw the costs* he thought it a good gamble on the lad.
(*I've heard he's on next to nowt)
You're saying it was totally Wilders decision then?
(So have I, but with decent bonuses for goals etc)
Let's give McCabe the last word...
The club's co-chairmen, Kevin McCabe and Jim Phipps, said they had not yet made a decision about whether to re-employ Evans.
"An article in The Sun today that Sheffield United has offered a contract to former player Ched Evans is false and damaging to the club," they said in a joint statement. "We have made a statement on this matter previously and the lack of credibility and substance from this latest media report does not warrant any expansion from previous comments apart from noting that we are continuing to deliberate on any long-term decision about Ched Evans."
Sorry, I'm not sure what you want me to take from the quoted article that was 18 months before Wilder became manager?
I'm also pretty sure Phipps had resigned before Wilder became Manager, so not sure what contribution he would've made?
You can the bit highlighted:
“apart from noting that we are continuing to deliberate on any long-term decision about Ched Evans."
To mean this wasn’t solely Wilders decision
You can also take the bit about this being a joint statement to mean McCabe’s opinion is the only one that is relevant here.
Listened to most of the live commentary on Radio Sheffield.
At the end of the match Keith Edwards said Evans played OK.
Said you can see he still has decent quality but he’s lost half a yard of pace and sharpness.
Said he’s not quite up to standard but not far off and needs more matches before he makes a proper judgement.
You really want me to take that article as McCabe having involvement over and above putting the deal to Wilder, even though the article is 18 months before Wilder became manager, 30 months before Evans was signed and one of the parties involved was no longer here?
Just wanting to make sure thats what you're meaning.
..take it how you like.
You're arguing over the wording of what I said, rather than the point I was making. If you feel I wasn't making my point well enough than that is fair enough but the thing you seem to have taken such offence at it the use of the word '100%'. Have you missed the bit where I accepted that wasn't what Wilder said? I'm sure you can find a way of telling me that isn't what I actually meant, like you know that better than I do.
If you want to carry on being pedantic then knock yourself out, I wouldn't want to ruin your fun.
Ched Evans
P 13
Minutes 461 (5 games 11 minutes)
76 minutes v Leicester
Evan's is due a goal but then again Clarke hasn't scored in 8 appearances (664 minutes) so maybe he's finished too.
It isn't intended as a direct comparison but to highlight how quickly our fans write off our players by fashioning statistics to suit. I could have also pointed out the 8 game span of games where Sharp didn't score either. This is a really terrible comparison.
both started for the Under 23s today ( lost one nil I think)Where was Ched last night? Also Freeman nowhere to be seen after a few games on the bench.
