Honest discussion about the atmosphere

Every week some nobhead comes on here and moans about the atmosphere. It's not bad. If you want it to sound like Ajax bring a pyro or a drum. Start an ultras bit wi Ricky. Why do we always have someone trying to bring stuff down? I'm not even interested in debating it. If you think the atmosphere should be better, do something about it rather than moaning on here or hammering your arm against the back of the kop.

It’s Plymouth at home, a match that everyone at the Lane expected us to win, including the Plymouth fans.

As we didn’t manage to put in an entertaining performance, the atmosphere was always going to be crap. That’s just how football is!

You're right on one thing: it's not bad.

It's fucking shite.

You are not interested in debating it, yet you have made the effort to go on the forum, click on the thread about it, then go on a huge major rant about it.

Some massive C U Next Tuesdays on the back of the Kop, (gangway C) today. "Wilder, Wilder, sort it out" at 1-0 in the second half. Cretins

I was the only one on my row who was not severely hung over = shite atmosphere

We are almost half way through the season and are three points clear at the top of the league despite having a 2 point deduction. Yet there are plenty on here saying “yes but we played shit.” “Yes but the atmosphere is shit.” “Fans leave early and so the fans are shit.” It is as if certain sections of our fans are in such a perpetual state of misery that they cannot and will not enjoy the good times. Snap out of it FFS.

Me and my lad sit in the family corner where it’s very quiet (except from the Kop noise). A lot of part timers in that corner.

BUT, we sing, shout, back the team as best we can and that’s all we can do, despite getting funny looks for being in a minority of ‘singers’ in that corner 😂

To which you've then responded to another post, debating it!!
You seem to be getting confused, I'm not debating the atmosphere. I fully think it's fine, and nobody will convince me otherwise. I'll dignify you with an answer, but I'm not debating with you. Not even sure what you think, but you seem rattled so I'll assume you think the atmosphere isn't good enough. Good for you.

If I hadn’t spent the last fifty plus years supporting United, I could very easily walk out and go and do something a bit more exciting, than, having gone one up, watch us knock it square and backwards then square again for the remainder of the game. Before waiting for the inevitable switch to 7 at the back, as Wilder switches midfielders for defenders.

There’s no atmosphere, because half the Kop are either falling asleep or wondering what they’ll be having for tea.

The atmosphere reflects the passion, intensity and commitment of the team performance, hence its flat

1. Did we play shit?
2. Was the atmosphere shit?
3. Did fans leave early?
4. If they did does that mean they are shit?

It's by far the worst it's ever been, you surely have to agree with that though?

Ah, just because we are top of the league, everything at the club is perfect and cannot be improved on, got you

We're you there in league one or the 90's?
Every single league one game almost , way more than I bother now, 17,18k then was still easily better than it is now, purely for the fact were top of the championship and its awful, not challenging for the playoffs in league one like then, it was atrocious even in the premier league coming 9th, compare it to 2006 premier league season, bramall lane was absolutely magnificent, the 90s yes but only young so can't comment on that.

I didn’t say that the club and squad is perfect did I? We are in urgent need of reinforcements in the January transfer window if we are to continue our current form. I was pointing out that we are currently in an excellent position in the league - three points clear at the top in fact. Yet certain people bitch and moan with some venom. We are in the Championship after all - the league where anybody can beat anyone and we won whilst not playing at our best.

Half the stadium stood up and left after we went 2-0 up 😂. I hate Leeds with a passion but their home atmosphere is electric and intimidating, ours isn’t unless something kicks off in the game at the moment.

Two of my mates are ST holders at Leeds and reckon their atmosphere has fell off massively over the last couple of seasons.

Fair. I am happy with the three points, that does not mean that I cannot also point out the obvious facts that we were shit today and the atmosphere was worse. Some of us are capable of taking off our bladey-blade tinted specs occasionally and see that we are top despite a bunch of things

I have seen this crop up a few times on here, particularly since COVID, but we need to start having a proper, open and honest discussion about the atmosphere at Bramall Lane at the moment and we need to do it without getting touchy and defensive.

I know this is quite a delicate subject because it is not a nice thing to have to admit and I think that is probably why the recent posts about this have been met with some negativity and so many excuses.

We need to come to the terms with the fact that the atmosphere at home games over the past 3/4 years has just not good enough and it is becoming borderline embarrassing.

I know people want different matchday experiences and it is not for everyone to be stood in the Kop singing for 90 minutes, and I know that many bring their young families and do not want it to be too rowdy.

But since COVID, for the most part, it has been truly awful and I think over the past year or so even the sections of the ground that have been doing their best to inject a bit of noise have slowly started to give up.

I personally want a raucous atmosphere for my matchday experience and I, like many others, probably fell in love with this club as a kid for that reason.

I know our identity as blades is built around the fact we support a proper club, with proper, honest down-to-earth, loyal fans, hailing from what I think is the best stadium in the world and I love us and our fans to bits. But the fiery cauldron, which only 9 years ago, Mauricio Pochettino described as the best atmosphere has ever experienced in England, is slowly becoming a myth that at the moment feels so far away.

I completely get that it can’t be amazing every week and when its 0-0 or cold or a midweek game it might not lend itself to being lively in the stands but since COVID I can probably count on one hand the amount of times when I have left thinking wow that was class today. And why should we only make noise when Man City are in town or when our centre half is clattering someone or the ref is bad? Or only when we are playing a brand of football we deem ‘proper’? I just don’t see it as valid to say ‘ah well we need to be entertained first…’.

What are we going to do about it? Obviously a club like ours should and would never go down the cringe faux ultras route of clubs like Boro, which is just not compatible with English fan culture in my opinion. But this issue is not going to be resolved by excuses and getting touchy about this.

I think the only solution I can see is if safe standing is brought in, which by all accounts is absolutely miles off, but at least this way, those that want this sort of matchday experience can be catered for and those that don’t can also be catered for.

Would be good to hear some honest thoughts on this.

The audience on strictly made more noise

Why in 2024 are we still having the arcane rule of ‘Tossing for ends’ before kick off ? Scrap it. It’s meant to be home field advantage let the home team chose which way they want to kick.

Football is meant to be in the entertainment industry and every single home fan at every stadium hates when the home team doesn’t get to attack their main home end second half.. ruins the atmosphere and the season ticket holders have paid top dollar around the country too.
Good point this tbf ...
