What Wilder has done here is good honest management. In the first two games of the season, with Evans and Lundsram in the center of midfield, it was obvious they were nowhere near good enough. Wilder has seen the problem and addressed it. Evans (and Leonard) are gone, Lundstram is now nowhere near the team and we have better players. Sure he has taken a punt with some new signings but if they don't work out, then off they go, and seemingly for a profit! No fuckwittery of the Adkins / Clough era treating the fans and board like idiots. He has made some mistakes and then took action to put them right. Shame we couldn't bring in a proven quality striker but who could have, for the cash at his disposal? Nonetheless, If he can persuade someone to sign Lundstram for a profit in January then I'll stoop down and kiss his arse!

I don't think it can be seriously denied that the signings in the January 2018 transfer window failed as a group. We finished lower than we were when they came in, 3 of them have gone for good, and the fourth is on loan and unlikely to feature again I suspect. Even if we made profits on two of those players that's poor business.

Nevertheless I am pleased by the way Wilder is not afraid to change things and move on players who he doesn't think are working out even though he signed them. As Ricky says in his excellent post, targeting younger players with good fitness records makes them easier to move on.

The first XI is better now than it was at the end of last season, which is encouraging.

We would have finished lower without them I think. We were inconsistent in the second half of the season but won plenty, in the period after Coutts' injury but before the window we really were poor.

LDLLLDWL post Coutts and before the window and DWDWWLLW after it opened.

We wouldn't have been anywhere near the playoffs without getting them in, I think it was as much psychological as anything, it really did seem like the players knew they were fucked without reinforcement, we were lifted by the signings.

They did that job well, but people move on. For me it's the same as Hanson etc, helped us go up (kept us in the hunt in this case) but now that's done, move them on if you need to.

United's net spend last season is now zero. We finished tenth in the Championship. Outstanding management. Our net spend this season is plus many millions. We stay up this season and it will once again be a season of outstanding management.Only the blinkered can't see that.Rotherham have a bigger net spend than us.

Jan was screwed by the owners fall out. McCabe wanted the Prince to put big money in to push for the perm, but the Prince either does not have the money, or believed putting more in and getting the success, would make it even more expensive for him to buy the club, so he tried to get it on the cheap. Which is what the court case is about or Brooks got ill so they were unable to cash in and support Wilder.

Whatever is the truth, the result was Wilder was left with no money and had to scrape the barrel, which improved us slightly to get us through to the end of the season.

I'm worried that this week's signing, could be similar, best players usually get done early in the window, Duffy, Fleck and now Norwood.

Player value goes down in the club accounts year by year (amortisation I believe)

"This demonstrates how clubs write-off the transfer value of a player over the life-time of their contract and also illuminates that because Robinho was worth £16.3m two years into his four year deal, Manchester City actually made an accounting profit on his transfer of £1.7m. Fans would see the sale of a player for £18m bought two years previously for £32.5m as bad business. The club in their accounts will class it as a £18.1m profit improvement."
It does, that's a topic I've covered at length elsewhere. However, with both Evans and Leonard the fee we received is bigger that the fee we paid so we made a headline profit before any amortisation is taken into account.

Wilder is doing an excellent job with the resources given him but signing 3 players permanently in January and binning them all off in August is not outstanding management by any measure.

They helped us to a tenth placed finish. Just as Hanson helped us get up.If we bin all our recent signings off next summer, and we haven't been relegated, then we will have had another great window.Until the financial parameters change that's the reality.

We were 6th when we signed them. And Holmes and Leonard didn't help at all.

Wilsons main function was to keep a better striker out of the team against Wednesday.

Wilder's doing a great job but let's not sugar coat it.

I have to disagree BT. Out of the 10/11 players that CW bought in both windows last season (both loan & perm), 4 remain. Stearman has gone from starter to bench, Lundstram is on the bench, baldock has been a good signing but is now on the bench & Stevens is starting, with many wishing he was on the bench with the previously mention three. Thems not good stats. To worsen them further, the rabble that we brought in in the JTW window spent very little actual time on the pitch. It’s also possible that it may have unintentionally caused a couple of noses to pop out of joint. I’m not 100% sure of the rules, but we coulda/shoulda picked up a free transfer, someone like Flamini (don’t laugh :) ) on a 6 month deal, quickly post Coutts injury to steady the ship, pushed Slater into the squad as cover, recalled Reed and then made one quality, norwoodesque signing in january, and all for a comparable sum of money (all in) for what we’ve spent on Evans, Holmes, Lundstram, Thomas, Leonard and Henneghan. We should’ve also sorted out the Carruthers situation out a lot quicker. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. :)

We'll have to agree to disagree.

The scouting and recruitment does need looking into. Yes we earnt some money butt we signed those players to help the squad. We were top at Christmas we signed these and they didn’t contribute enough.

What do you suggest we change about the transfer policy? (You clearly think something needs to be changed if it requires "looking into")

You also mentioned that we were top of the table before the signed, why?

Lundstram is utterly dreadful, he's lucky to have survived this purge.

Still despite the missteps we're still stronger than this time last year.

Just wanted to drag this up to say Lundstram was excellent yesterday.

Fair enough he came on in great circumstances but he looked much better - sharp into the tackle, enterprising breaking forward and even passing the ball to teammates!

He was instantly better against Hull in the cup too, he faded a bit but that Norwood effect innit.

I think it was too much for the lad. Hopefully now he's not needed weekly he'll have time to work on his game and gradually earn a place.
