Henderson

Some great keepers mentioned on here, but let’s remember that Henderson is our current keeper and he’s just got and England call up. In the here and now he’s probably the most important player in our squad and how he performs over the next 7 months will define our season.

WELL DONE DEANO!

Mel Rees was incredible in the few games he played ,I've never seen such agility

Alan Kelly. Still the greatest keeper we ever had. Heres a picture of him in the greatest keeper shirt aswell. View attachment 62375

I can't believe someone at Umbro actually greenlighted that shirt.

Mind you, it was the decade that style forgot (see also the Avec "mixed veg" kit from later on)!

Alan Kelly is the goalkeeper in my Best Blades Eleven I ever saw , just shading it over two other greats in Hodgy and Ted Burgin due to his greater physical presence .

Mel Rees was truly outstanding in his tragically short career with us , but it would be unfair on the others to choose him over them based on the limited number of games he played .

Simon Tracey was quite good but not in the same league as the aforementioned and , much as I had a soft spot for Paddy , he comes a good way behind all of the above IMO .

It was the 90’s mate. That goalie shirt sold shit loads. Thats what the club should be doing, selling lots of them. They make money out of it, hardly anyone buys goalie shirts now.

Maybe Henderson being promoted to the full England squad will be a pivotal point in many Blades attitudes to International Football. Forums & Social Media platforms used to be littered with comments along the lines of .... "don't want them to get picked, they might get injured, tired, out of form, seen my another manager" ... when United players were selected for their country. (Admittedly, not England & not Henderson). But, I'm not really detecting any negative comments this time around. We currently have Internationals from Ireland, Scotland, Bosnia & Hercegovina & Belize across our squads. And age group players for England, Northern Ireland & Wales. I'm proud of that.

Best individual performances in a series of games I’ve ever seen by any United keeper in my lifetime.

Apart from the Leeds game, which everyone seems to forget and suggest it was down to injury when the injury itself was caused by his error on the first goal (you can probably excuse the other goals in that one due to the injury). One of the best debuts I’ve seen though, and certainly the best debut for a United keeper I’ve seen.

I cant emphasise how much I disagree with you but at the same time I won’t argue. Could’ve been better, could’ve been worse.
Had someone said before the season stats you’ll take a point from vicarage road everyone would’ve took it. I’m staying in that mindset.

Absolutely this, I'd have taken this points total so far with bells on. But here's the caveat......

We have taken to this league better than most of.us could have imagined and that has raised expectations somewhat. And it's a league where the least little mistake is usually punished, and a couple of times ours have been. So great start absolutely, but with a tinge of frustration that we aren't a point or two better off. Still not a.bad position to be in by any means.

Belize? Presume this is one of our youth players.

Tom McAllister for me......every time!

Difficult to disagree, I suppose it depends on your age and how far back you go for those proposing more recent GKs. When you consider he never reached his full potential due to Marsh smashing his leg and Bates nearly taking his head off and between them knocking the stuffing clean out of him, looking back his talent was even more remarkable.

Hodgy was too small for a GK to be considered for top spot, end of. Kelly was miles better than Tracey as has been pointed out above and Kenny would give them all a run for their money when he was on song. Henderson is doing OK but has to prove it yet at the top level. At the moment he's not even in top 5.

The definitive list is (in my time) is:

McAlister
Kelly
Kenny
Hodgy
Tracey

Mel Rees has been omitted intentionally as he has a special place somewhere else.

I'm proud of it but I still don't want them to get injured. John Egan is the main concern for me.

It's highly unlikely that Henderson will get near the first 11 so hopefully it will be a good experience for him. I'd love JOC to get a call up as it shows wider recognition for what he's achieved the last few years.

My attitude with England is "hope they win but won't get upset if they don't". I'll watch the tournaments and have seen England at the world cup in my early 20's but would now struggle to make special effort to watch friendlies or qualifiers, again it's not that I don't care it's just that I have other priorities in life.

In the Lampard/Gerrard/Terry days I wasn't in the slightest bit interested in what they did but that apathy has disappeared.

Having a son who is interested in football has also meant that I'm more likely to make an effort. I'd like to take him to Wembley to watch England one day, I remember going myself as a young whipper snapper to Terry Venables' first game in charge v Denmark.

Deane has three full caps - x2 versus New Zealand and one versus Spain

I’m not sure if they’ve updated it, and I can’t find the photo I posted up here of it a year or two ago, but the South Stand piece on the wall about his caps seemed to list them as England B caps rather than England caps, which I suggested was wrong...

Too right. The Spain game was a "full" friendly at the start of the season (the one where David White missed a sitter). And the NZ games were part of an end of season tour.

it would appear all 3 were B games, here is a comprehensive breakdown of his England career

** the website doesnt seem to label the Spain game as a B game however

If you look at the bottom table it shows three B team appearances and three full international appearances.

I have found my post on this (with snap of offending stat just calling Deane a B international). Was from January this year so presumably still in the South Stand.

I’ve probably walked past the wall of ex-players in the South Stand plenty of times since it was introduced, but just walking past Deane’s today ahead of the game it just suddenly occurred...why isn’t he recognised as a full international on this? Hasn’t he been capped at both B and senior level? Info online would suggest he has...

Silent Blade or anyone else got the definitive answer?
