Yes, this business of "Listen" is not that important in the scheme of things but, nevertheless it is annoying. It started years ago in cricket, particularly, amongst the Aussies . Ricky Ponting in particular. Totally unnecessary as the person who asked the question is already listening.
With Dave Bassett it was "Obviously..." And with Brian Deane it was "You know..."

It’s from the media training that they get. By starting a sentence with “Look…”, “Listen…” or “That’s right…” it buys you half a second to plan an answer.
