In an ideal world I think it’s fair to say Hecky would probably prefer a clear out of some of the deadwood in our squad and sign some quality replacements along with the 5/6 extra players needed to compete next season. Unfortunately because of the ownership situation he feels he needs to re-sign all the players whose contracts are up this summer. Should he be brave and twist by releasing the deadwood and gamble on a change of ownership or should he stick with what he’s got with the risk of compromising the squad if the new owner comes in ???

He should do a mix of both, keep some of the old guard where we are short or where a player offers us value (eg Osbourne covering several different positions), release some of the deadwood and then try to supplement the old guard with some new first teamers.

Wholesale changes would be as bad as buying nobody at all, we need to keep some continuity, that's the most important thing IMO

With the ownership situation it’s not a stretch to conclude that keeping players already here on the books for next season is a sensible plan

Even if we had money to burn it’s not easy releasing 6 players who are probably the core of the social group. You’re tearing the squad apart.
Yep, I think this is really important. You could see consistently how close this team are and we don't have the money to go for a massive rebuild of Premier quality players like Forest (and even they have struggled despite the money spent).

One thing we have on our side is that despite clauses for wage drops, the likes Fleck, Stevens and even Osborn will be on hefty wages that we can reinvest. I'd like to see us spend on few proven quality, but then look at some younger players from the EFL with upside. Ogbene looks like a no-brainer to me personally.

He can only suggest to the owners what he thinks, it's not his money.

Agree , but keeping too many of them will stop us bringing new lads in ,meaning we dont improve , difficult

We need to name a squad of 25 Senior players.
Sign 6 permanent and 2 loanees who are good enough to be first choices.
Keep or resign the best 17 players who are already on the books.
Some of those will become squad players.
A few won’t make the cut.

Why, when PH has proven time after time that he isn't truthful in press conferences
so you think he should blurt out who he's interested in and hope no one else then tries to nick them
its a cutthroat business and a manager has to be like a magician, deceive and put up smoke screens

Every season people come on here and tell who and why we are signing no one
and every year seem mystified when we do sign players

Surely any team changes all the players that can be improved on, provided the balance of the squad and team morale are not adversely affected. Those decisions of course involve money available and whether the players wish to join us.
In our case I guess there are only 5/6 that can be changed.

You can't keep players for sentimental reasons, giving Fleck, Stevens and Osborn new contacts would be stupid.
That’s 3 players. I said 6. I agree that some should go, particularly Stevens but we still need a squad. Fleck will be a squad player I’d let him go personally if we can get a first choice LCM in though and Osborn can play a number of positions if needs be. If we’re relying on these players to be first choice then you’re right we’re in trouble.

The summer transfer window closes in less than four months.

Extremely unlikely a takeover will have been completed by then.

Clarify "deadwood"please.

Why, when PH has proven time after time that he isn't truthful in press conferences (that's not a dig, I don't care either way) do people decide to take this one as gospel?

Agreed. PH plays his cards close to his chest so I am taking anything said with a massive pinch of salt.

I think we will see both more out of the door, and more coming in than expected.

With out doubt, reading loads of stuff on this subject on twitter and this site the view seems to be that the following out of contract players should be released as no where near PL standards and will tie up loads of the wage budget
Sharp
Enda
Osborn
Fleck
The above would probably cost 6 million in salary next season, we need that money to try and keep Iliman and bring in better quality players
I would probably now keep Robinson and Norwood as squad players
McBurnie should also be offered an extension

The thing is with players out of contract they may not like the new terms offered especially if they want to play football and not just pick up a wage.Stevens & Fleck for instance may get a year offered a year with us on much the same or reduced terms and have offers of three year contracts elsewhere on not too dissimilar wages.

Simples….last prem sides first teamers can be this time outs reserves.
That would have always been the plan anyway.
So Fleck/Norwood/Bash etc

Fleck and Stevens aren’t even average Championship standard anymore but suspect they’d both get plenty of offers in league but at a reduced wage.

At league in league 1 they should see plenty of game time.

Ok I'll add JOC to the list and Sharp unless he wants to go on the coaching side, I'd expect him to leave though for more game time.

Obviously JOC will go. I think Fleck & Osborn will stay. It will be Sharps choice.

Stevens will go, maybe Adam Davies unless he accepts being 3rd choice. Depends how bad Osborn’s injury is. I’d say absolute maximum 4 get released from the squad.

Why on earth would we offer Fleck and Osborn new contracts? Fleck is over the hill and injury prone, Osborn is not good enough even for the championship.

Because we have no other choice. Like Hecky said we need to add to the current squad. I absolutely don’t think either of them are good enough to be premier league footballers, but we’re dealing with what we’ve got. Osborn & Fleck will hopefully be fringe players.

The alternative option is having Coulibaly & Brooks as the fringe players who have 0 English league experience. That would stop Brooks progression who needs a season out on loan & id probably say Coulibaly does too.

Current owned midfield options:

Berge
Norwood
Fleck
Osborn
Coulibaly

As our only midfield options. If you release two of them we realistically need to sign 5 midfielders which we don’t have the funds to do. Doyle & McAtee are going back.
