Speaking to a friend of mine who is a Barnsley fan he was telling me how Heckingbottom has a history of accumulating injuries at which ever club he takes over. Couple of links below are articles from his Leeds/ Barnsley days where he blames injuries.

It might be coincidence, it might not. But when he came to the club there was a clear message from him that training needed to step up & they almost went through a mini pre-season to get them fit. Could this have caused the soft tissue injuries to McGoldrick, Davies, Brewster etc….

I think Hecko is doing an unbelievable job with his hands tied, but the injury list does concern me & it’s not something we’ve had that much of in the past. We always had a pretty settled side with Wilder for 3/4 years until JOC got injured.

Interesting one. Not sure what to conclude this season with covid problems chucked in as well? The same problem happened at Leeds with bielsa.

I think we’d have to see longer term how it pans out with us. It’s certainly not helped having to step up the intensity mid season when players should already be showing high fitness levels.

But as much as Hecky has said about the training pitches needing sorting, Billy has also countered this by reminding us all that the training pitches have been the same for years.

We also had the mini break that wasn’t a break over Xmas when other teams were dropping with Covid, we continued training for matches and the intensity over this period.

But I think the biggest thing is the number of games we’ve had to cram in and with a few injuries already reducing the squad numbers we’ve had to crack on with half fit players.

Hecky, like Wilder gets players playing at that high intensity so the risk is always higher for
Injury, but I think it’s a combination of all the above plus some luck which has played its part

I agree, high intensity training & high press will come with its issues. I remember playing football when I was younger & we had a fairly decent ex professional coach come in over pre season to get us fit, within 2/3 games we all had soft tissue injuries. I know you can’t compare our bodies to those of championship footballers but going from one extent (Slav) to another (Hecko) will have take its toll

Yeah theres a very good example of this... Mousse. Sustained a number of soft tissue injuries, perhaps in part due to his inability to look after himself. Each time he came back he was 'unlucky' to get a set back. But it was mostly unsurprising and nor was the timing of the injuries given that he rarely played more than an hour, his injuries would come at that time or there would be another set back in the days after the longer games he played.

You have to build the intensity over a period of time and the recovery also has to be reflected as well. Sports scientists may correct me, but my understanding is that the muscles have to be built to sustain the intensity and thats where the conditioning comes in.

I think a lot of the conditioning, particularly in preseason or post rehab, is either done off the players own back or is arranged by the club privately. Again, Mousse got himself a PT privately before he got his loan move.

Get him out of our club now!
The bastard.
I know this is only in jest, but I think he’s doing an incredible job & I agree with what Wilder said in that we’d be challenging Fulham if we’d had him all season.

The injuries are a common theme of his though & something he needs to address moving forward.

We have had players struggling with injuries prior to him taking charge.

Hecky seems to know why some of the recent injuries have happened.

My mate who isn’t my mate now as he was outed as a compulsive liar once told me Heckingbottom walks round at training sessions kicking everyone. Make of that what you will.

Did Billy counter what Hecky said? Or did he agree with him by pointing out that while the game has evolved in terms of intensity, fitness, science, etc, our training pitches haven't been upgraded at all in the time since he was here as a kid?

I think Billy just pointed out that it wasn’t an excuse as it’s always been like that.

Maybe players weren't quite fit enough in the first place?

He’s played pretty much every minute of all the games over 2 week, I’m not sure that’s a good management at 36. Jebbison should have got a run out mid week in my opinion. Even if you just bring Billy on for the last 20

"High intensity" .... are you sure?

McAtee referred to the level of intensity in his interview when he signed, he said "it's serious, if you're sloppy they get after you".

Could it be a case of poor pitch, high stakes high intensity training? If so how can we avoid that without losing the edge in matches?

He just means if you have a heavy touch and don't trap the ball properly Kean Bryan comes flying in with a 2 footer. He's not even under contract anymore we just can't get rid of him

It was the same under Wilder.

Worth noting though that Bielsa has a reputation of wearing players out. It's noticeable that the players who have been with us through promotion are now struggling with injuries.

We can lower the intensity but then the performances will be worse.

If you remember MGW and Ndiaye under Slav. They did little of the defensive side. A huge transformation by the end of the season and arguably our hardest working players.

I don’t agree with your last point. Both players were defending from the front from day 1.
