Harry Soutar

We have to focus on simply going up and spending on Souttar now would waste vital funds needed to strengthen elsewhere

We should try to sign him if we go up, but we would ideally need to find a good athlete to play alongside him

If we go up he’s not the answer.
You say that like his fellow centre half is, and tore it up the last time he played there.
Rather keep him as the ball winner and sign a new pacey ball playing partner... if, we're having this discussion before we've even get there.

Can a deal be done now with a view to buy in the summer?

The thread title is ‘Harry Soutar’ and so is the topic of discussion, which I have commented on. Totally baffled how you have come to the conclusion that I could be also talking about his centre half partner while commenting on the topic, Harry Souter.

He is great in the Championship and any club wanting out of this league would be daft not to sign him. The PL is a very different game of football to the Championship, the ball is not getting lumped about in air like this season, it is a very fast paced game, played on the floor at a quick pace with very intelligent players. We have seen this first hand just last season. Apart from corners every coach worth their salt would make sure no ball goes in the air near him while also very much targeting him on the ground. There is a reason he is not playing in the PL now.

Just my opinion which doesn’t make me right 👍

I knew you were only talking about Harry, I'm just pointing out that if he isn't the answer for the Prem then neither is Anel, we could give up on Souza after last season too then.
There's been slightly more headed goals in the Prem this season than there has been in the Championship. The build up and the style might be different, but don't be under the impression that everything's played on the ground. Not that Harry has been found wanting there very often either. Are the players even faster up there? OK their speed of thought and passing might be, but until a few years ago Harry's namesake was a beast at Premier League and International level and he has a lot of similar attributes.

Well Anel, Souza is another for another discussion this is about Souter. There may be more headed goals this season in the PL I don’t know but those will come from quality balls in from in and around the box, i.e the ball in from Trent Alexander yesterday that took out every defender. It’s totally different levels of play, but I wasn’t even talking about those quality balls into the box, like I say there is no lumping the ball forward like in the championship, the amount of times this season the ball is just lumped forward in the air and Soutar wins it is unreal, against the pigs he headed it clear 3 times in about 15 seconds because it was just coming back, absolutely brilliant, but that doesn’t happen in the PL, there will be none of that. All on the floor until in and around the box and then it’s quality.

He is a good player but I just don’t think he’s suited to the PL and that is the reason why he is not playing there now for his struggling parent club and he’s in the Championship with us. I like him, he’s been brilliant for us but as we know the PL is many levels in standard above than who we are playing against now.

If Leicester go down and we go up it's a obvious move for all three parties. Doesn't mean it happens though. Hes only played 12 games in a struggling Leicester side in the premier league and then they got in a manager with a totally different style to Wilder.

Maybe he works in our set up?

We saw Souttar against Sunderland. How he struggled against them and their quick forwards. And their style of football is what most Premier League teams play, only (much) better.
You're writting him off because he got caught out a couple of times against Sunderland? And you're likening their style (a team we beat) to a Premier League side?
They were good that day, and we were below par, nothing more.

Not writing him off, but I can't see his lack of mobility not become an issue in the Premier League. It's not like Leicester's current centre backs are world beaters either. But he still couldn't get minutes ahead of a player who's famous for scoring two own goals in one match.

I can recall these types of comments regarding Bash, JOC, Enda, Gorgeous, Fleck, Didzy first time after being promoted under Wilder. They were all fine. I appreciate that the Premier League has advanced even further since then but Souttar, under Wilder, would be fine for us if we go up. Let’s not forget the disparaging thread about Ryan One. Players read this forum.

Anel has the potential to do well in the Prem next season too. Has put last year’s problems behind him. Agree with you about Souttar as well. Will cope fine with (for example) Man City’s predictable, plodding attacks now they’ve been found out.

You can’t recall them comments from me that’s for sure.

As for the Ryan One thread I said I don’t think our young players should be slagged off especially a 19 year old who had started his very first game for us. Not sure how that is relative to this discussion, firstly this is not a youth player but a experienced 26 year old international footballer, secondly and more importantly I have not slagged him off, if you had read correctly you will see I like him and he’s been brilliantly for us but I don’t think he’s suited to the football played in PL. But hey ho don’t let that stop you from playing the poster instead of the post.

It doesn't always work like that though.
Southampton think BBD is the second coming of Chris Porter, for us in the Prem he was an absolute machine.
Styles, team mates, confidence and coaching can be huge.

Steady on. I am definitely not playing the poster. You’re one of the few posters on here who stands out. I can recall your backing of Ryan One which is why I quoted that. I see the Harry Souttar situation differently to you.

Ok mate fair enough. As I said don’t believe our youth players should be slagged, and I’m certainly not slagging Soutar, he’s been brilliant. Just the football played in the PL I just don’t think he’s suited to, your opinion is he will be fine, nothing wrong with that opinion whatsoever. We all see football and players differently which again there is nothing wrong with 👍

His lack of mobility will be an issue in the Prem, but we are not going to sign players without vulnerabilities at that level. Last time we were up, it was clear that across the Prem teams were prioritising centre halves who were strong in the air and we were absolutely bullied in that department, it cost is far more than pace did. My feeling is Souttar will lose a few races for sure, but will otherwise give us a reasonably competitive centre half in enough games to matter, plus a big comparative advantage in at least one area of the field. Like with Brereton Diaz, there will be better options, but they will be gambles or gems in a need of a good polishing.

We were constantly beaten in the air last season.
