Always knew Harry was a class act and he would play for England. I rate him higher than Jags as a natural centre back. I have still yet to see him out muscled. The player I really wished would have stayed with us.

Maguire developed and improved under United every season.
In his final season for us he was fantastic and had clearly outgrown league 1.
For his development he needed Championship football as a minimum.

There was 1 more year on his contract and we offered him a contract extension doubling his wage making him deservedly the highest paid player at the club. Unfortunately for us Hull City were able to blow our wage offer out of the water.

We had the choice to demand that he serves his final year with us, risking an unhappy player, also his presence still might not had gauranteed us promotion, also a major factor was he would be able to leave us on a free, meaning no funds to strengthen the squad.

He served us well and left for acceptable reasons where all 3 parties (us, Hull and Maguire) benefited.
Good luck to him, wish him well, he does look like a potential England international.

I learnt the very fucking hard way that loyalty buys fuckall , and is very rarely rewarded .
After 17 years building a place up from nowt to where it is now .

Why stick with a club just because the fans want you to , footballers are one bad injury away from the scrap heap .

Coady wouldn't come to us because we were a league lower than Uddersfield .
Now look at how his career has devolved , and how much it may cost us to get him back .
Nothing wrong with ambition , don't fuck anybody in the process doing it .

I think with footballers contracts mean nothing, Coutinho signed a 5 year contract with Liverpool in January, 5 days ago he handed in a transfer request. Players sign contracts to give them security, 1 slip down the stairs tomorrow morning and it could all be over and I don't blame them, they have, in general, given up everything to be a professional footballer. We and fans of all clubs have to accept that the only people with undying loyalty to their club are the fans, some chairmen and very rarely a player, Dane for us, Gerard, Neville etc. The rest probably like a club when they are there but soon move on

Yes, we really benefited from selling Maguire. I remember thinking that when we went 3-0 down at Swindon with a back 4 comprised entirely of full backs.

My only surprise is that it took Harry so long to break into the first team at Hull, I would have expected fat 'ead Bruce to recognise his qualities a lot quicker than he did, the fact he was playing his soon in front of him was plain bonkers

One of the reasons Maguire made it is that he played over 100 games for us in the lower leagues learning his trade the hard way. Conversely this is why the likes of Mellis, Slew and Diego didn't, getting stupid notions put in their heads by agents and pushy parents instead.

Couldn't agree more SF some parents are badly advised by agents as they're on back handlers from clubs .Also as to why some PL clubs sign a player then keep him in the U23's for a couple of seasons , surely they'd be better loaning the player back to the club that's developed them & brought them to their attention? Better first team football against men in any of the 4 divisions & not against kids of there age or younger with the odd experienced player turning out , they develop quicker . I played at a decent level when I was younger and remember going from being part of a very good U16 to playing full adult football , you grew up and hardened up very quickly !

You've answered your own question there mate, it comes down to Steve Bruce. He played Michael Dawson and his son over Maguire for a long time which just shows what a judge of player he is.

He's done it again this season by getting caught up in the euphoria and the dick measuring contest by signing Terry when he already has better suited centre half options for the Championship at the club.

He smashed Craig Bellamy 30 seconds after coming off the bench in our relegation season. It got a massive ovation as it was the first tackle any of our players made all night.

Isn't John Terry "guaranteed" promotion? I'm sure his agent put it in the contract, as well as the clause that allows him to lift the trophy in full kit, even if he is no longer with Villa.

It was amusing that Maguire's forays into the opposition half, which will be familiar to all Blades fans, were treated on Saturday on MOTD as something new and exciting.

Interesting point Pomps. If a player signs a new contract and leaves, does the buying club have to pay up the contract, thus inflating the fee received by the selling club?
