Harry Maguire

if you are a defender you only need pace if your positioning is poor :see Moore, Bobby

I'm only kidding mate. I'm referring to the loads of posts saying this when we had him.

Always knew Harry was a class act and he would play for England. I rate him higher than Jags as a natural centre back. I have still yet to see him out muscled. The player I really wished would have stayed with us.

Maguire developed and improved under United every season.
In his final season for us he was fantastic and had clearly outgrown league 1.
For his development he needed Championship football as a minimum.

There was 1 more year on his contract and we offered him a contract extension doubling his wage making him deservedly the highest paid player at the club. Unfortunately for us Hull City were able to blow our wage offer out of the water.

We had the choice to demand that he serves his final year with us, risking an unhappy player, also his presence still might not had gauranteed us promotion, also a major factor was he would be able to leave us on a free, meaning no funds to strengthen the squad.

He served us well and left for acceptable reasons where all 3 parties (us, Hull and Maguire) benefited.
Good luck to him, wish him well, he does look like a potential England international.

Murphy wanted to leave to get in the Scottish Euro squad, career on the up. (Optimism)
McGuire left because of many things, career on the up
Sharp stayed because we had just been promoted, he loves the Blades and he is in the last couple of years of his career.
Not sure Wilder would have made any difference in either case but as always the positives are in spite of McCabe, the negatives because of McCabe

Murphy had just signed a three year contract. No one signs a three year contract and wants to leave.

Maguire left yes, because of the offer of sunny uplands on offer with Hull, but he was benched for ages. The main reason he left is because it was ready moolah, at a time we were struggling with countless managerial failures and unfulfilled expectations. We still don't know how much he actually went for, what the payment deal was and we are assuming there's some sort of kick back with his move to Leicester, an idea which hasn't much been discussed.

I've just changed jobs , was it down to loyalty , steady as she goes job in the last place .
NO ,
Money .
I learnt the very fucking hard way that loyalty buys fuckall , and is very rarely rewarded .
After 17 years building a place up from nowt to where it is now .
Well done anyone of our players that want to better themselves ,
If we aren't doing it league / club / or ambition wise .
Why stick with a club just because the fans want you to , footballers are one bad injury away from the scrap heap .
Like one of mine / our all time favs , Dane , who's time with us was cut short .
Harry , Murphs , stayed with us learnt the trade and moved on , and didn't demean us or our club in the process and I wish them nothing but a long and prosperous future , unfortunately other players didn't
by making snide remarks on Twatter , like some jug eared cunt did .
They stayed loyal and played a part in a team that almost got promoted at the first go ,
and almost got us to 2 cup finals , thank you and good luck .
Coady wouldn't come to us because we were a league lower than Uddersfield .
Now look at how his career has devolved , and how much it may cost us to get him back .
Nothing wrong with ambition , don't fuck anybody in the process doing it .
So well done Harry lad from one grateful Blade for your time with us , and good luck with your future .

I think with footballers contracts mean nothing, Coutinho signed a 5 year contract with Liverpool in January, 5 days ago he handed in a transfer request. Players sign contracts to give them security, 1 slip down the stairs tomorrow morning and it could all be over and I don't blame them, they have, in general, given up everything to be a professional footballer. We and fans of all clubs have to accept that the only people with undying loyalty to their club are the fans, some chairmen and very rarely a player, Dane for us, Gerard, Neville etc. The rest probably like a club when they are there but soon move on

Yes, we really benefited from selling Maguire. I remember thinking that when we went 3-0 down at Swindon with a back 4 comprised entirely of full backs.

I can't believe Leicester got him for 18m, very good deal for them but at that price I really don't understand why the likes of City and Arsenal weren't looking at him, especially since both teams are in need of central defenders.

He's a better player than Keane I think, and he went for 30m.

It's a matter of when and not if he plays for England and he fully deserves it.

I think what you say is correct, but let's not forget the other side of the coin, clubs can quickly drop a player without a second thought. Those who condemn Harry Maguire for taking the money, should spare a thought for Terry Kennedy, Callum McFadzean or Otis Khan

Professional football can be a fragile existence, where loyalty on either side is a very rare commodity :(

I was talking to Spurs pal the other week and he reckoned they were in for him but Harry turned them down because his game time might be more limited...the Spurs fan reckoned he'd have plenty of games in the three they play however...

Who knows, could be bull!

Watching Arsenal's start I'm surprised they didn't go for him :)

Delighted for him, I always enjoy seeing former Blades gracing the Premiership. My only surprise is that it took Harry so long to break into the first team at Hull, I would have expected fat 'ead Bruce to recognise his qualities a lot quicker than he did, the fact he was playing his soon in front of him was plain bonkers

Terry Kennedy is a great example of why a young player should sign the best contract on offer when the opportunity arises...widely seen as better than Harry at a young age, because of one knee injury he is playing in division 7 and Harry at the top. He like Harry made a lot of s

One of the reasons Maguire made it is that he played over 100 games for us in the lower leagues learning his trade the hard way. Conversely this is why the likes of Mellis, Slew and Diego didn't, getting stupid notions put in their heads by agents and pushy parents instead.

GLTTL
Couldn't agree more SF some parents are badly advised by agents as they're on back handlers from clubs .Also as to why some PL clubs sign a player then keep him in the U23's for a couple of seasons , surely they'd be better loaning the player back to the club that's developed them & brought them to their attention? Better first team football against men in any of the 4 divisions & not against kids of there age or younger with the odd experienced player turning out , they develop quicker . I played at a decent level when I was younger and remember going from being part of a very good U16 to playing full adult football , you grew up and hardened up very quickly !

If so then I respect Maguire even more for going to Leicester to guarantee himself game time.

You've answered your own question there mate, it comes down to Steve Bruce. He played Michael Dawson and his son over Maguire for a long time which just shows what a judge of player he is.

He's done it again this season by getting caught up in the euphoria and the dick measuring contest by signing Terry when he already has better suited centre half options for the Championship at the club.

I think he was out muscled by Giroud for the winning goal the first match of the season!
Having said that, I agree with everything said previously. Right from his debut he clearly was going to make it..
Who was the well-known player he tackled in one of his first matches that became a talking-point?

He smashed Craig Bellamy 30 seconds after coming off the bench in our relegation season. It got a massive ovation as it was the first tackle any of our players made all night.

As far as daft statements go that's on a par with your proclamation last season that we should sign Paddy Kenny.

Here we go.

So, you sign a three year contract and want to leave?

"Jamie, sign here, here and here."

"But I want to leave."

"Don't worry about that. Just sign."

"Okay. And I get my signing bonus, plus wages and goals and appearances cut? Even though I want to leave?"

"Yeah. Just sign."

Not difficult, is it?

I reckon that was Morgans man who just let him run past him but you know what I mean anyway. A top bloke and player.

Isn't John Terry "guaranteed" promotion? I'm sure his agent put it in the contract, as well as the clause that allows him to lift the trophy in full kit, even if he is no longer with Villa.

A very good old style English CH but well past his best now. Even if we had the money to spunk, I wouldn't have wanted him at BDTBL. Full weight wanker for all his off the field baggage and I'm not sure we have enough disabled spots for him and all his wanky hangers on to park in.

And fans can change their minds pretty quickly.

Far cry away from the old 'Leadboots' jibe the dirties gave him a few seasons ago.

Not sure who "the dirties" are as there were a good number ON HERE who used to slag him off for not being Usain Bolt's superior in the speed stakes.
My favourite was the notion that we'd had "Hulls pants down" over the deal. Quite possibly the silliest thing ever posted on here!

I predicted that Maguire would play for England the year before he broke into our first team.Currie would echo my comment a few years later, to the mirth of many - including Blades. I don't think his game has developed that much since then, he's just proved it at a higher level. It could be argued that the Hull move actually held him back - that he should've gone to Wolves for the game time. After 130 appearances for United we couldn't hold him back an longer. That was our fault, not his. He may well have the chance to move to a major European club and surpass Kyle Walker. The kids that good. There is a dearth of quality ball playing centre backs in world football, which only adds to this possibility

It was amusing that Maguire's forays into the opposition half, which will be familiar to all Blades fans, were treated on Saturday on MOTD as something new and exciting.

Interesting point Pomps. If a player signs a new contract and leaves, does the buying club have to pay up the contract, thus inflating the fee received by the selling club?
