That and the fact that he's got all those goals and assists as well eh.
He wouldn't even be in the squad if he hadn't scored and got some assists. And when you say 'all those goals and assists' you're trying to make it sound like he's in double figures with both.

That and the fact that he's got all those goals and assists as well eh.

It's a funny one though: if Scougall was that good or playing that well wouldn't he be starting games? The stats would suggest he's more effective than Matt Done: Scougall has 1 assist and 4 goals in 18 appearances (5 starts) whereas Done has 2 goals and 2 assists in 18 appearances (17 starts).

Maybe he's just not that good?

He wouldn't have got those goals and assists if Wilder hadn't deemed him good enough to be in the squad. Cause and effect.

No, I mean now. If he hadn't have upped his game when given a chance, which I assume he earned through his attitude and application in training, he'd be on his way out.

He's done OK and I'm glad because he's a Sheffield United player and I want them all to do well.

Fair point, but your first paragraph could easily apply to Coutts and Freeman. We've benefitted from their resurgence in form when they were destined for the boot, just as we have with Scougall. A testament to Wilders man management abilities.

My original point is that Basham hasn't brought that much at all to the table, and his calamities have in fact cost us.

We've got the right man now so maybe the crazy journey to here will have been worth it by May

But Coutts and Freeman have become first team regulars. So has Basham.

What I don't get is that you're happy to slate Basham for his perceived errors and weaknesses whilst praising Scougall, a very limited player, when both demonstrate the commitment and work rate necessary for our system to work properly. Especially when it's been well documented that Scougall is a mate of McNulty's and was part of the 'don't give a fuck about United' drinking gang with the 'jug eared cunt'.
I just don't get the hatred of Basham. He's clumsy and not the most skilful but he's one of the few who put a shift in last season and been picked regularly by three different managers, including and most importantly, the current one who seems to know what he's doing. I've never heard stories of him sucking lollipops or turning up at the Northern General after a night out.

Scougall, in his few appearances has contributed positive things to the team. Basham, for as long as he's been a fixture in the squad this season has been a hinderance.
It's not a 'hatred', I just don't think he's good enough. Last season I wanted him as captain from the beginning, certainly over McEveley, but the team has changed immeasurably around him. He's not gotten any worse, but the rest of the team around him is now exponentially better.

Without Basham in the team our midfield would get steamrollered every game.

That's what Basham brings to the team

Clough wasn't the worst manager we've had since we've been down here but I just don't think he will ever be able to take on a club with the sort of ambitions we have . He will always be a decent boss at clubs with lower expectations as his style of play suits the underdog.

If you are expecting your team to go out and dominate games then Clough is the wrong choice but if you want a backs to the wall, fighting against the odds boss then you can do worse than Clough. He was perfect for us when we were in that relegation battle but for me just didn't have the mentality to be in charge of a club expecting promotion.

Agree, when you look at his record he wasn't best suited to what we needed in his second season. He'd have been happier with less money and more time.

Hits the nail on the head for me. Did anyone see his comments on the C5 highlights show on Sat? in a nutshell, 'it's tough for us to compete in this league, and as long as the boys put in a shift we are happy'.

Somehow I can't see Wilder coming out with something like that. He is more likely to tell his players to step up or make way.

Different situation though tbf. Survival is the height of Burton's realistic ambitions and if Clough starts slating them in public for losing games they're always likely to, it's not going to help motivate them to put in the performances needed to stay up.

In L1, we should be doing well and winning most of our games and our players have to able to deal with the much greater level of expectation.

As much as I didn't like the bloke, this is a very fair and balanced post on Clough as a manager, I couldn't have put it any better Roy.

Meanwhile we prosper with half the team Clough purchases.
Fair comment. Athough those that stay will do so on a fraction of the pay, and we've further binned a team full of his players, at great cost.

Clough, like his successor, have a lot to answer for - both financially and for the utterly wank style of play.

Thank god we've got Wilder instead.

Hammond ,Sammon ,Woolford. No comparison.
Have I mentioned the starting 11 at Bury before ? :)

Having seen what Wilder has done with previous players, my position has shifted on Adkins.

But Clough really did spend a fortune, and as with Adkins, the dreadful style of football has been put into perspective by Wilder.

For your Bury away I'll raise you Swindon away in the play off's (first half at least!) :)

Fucking hell. One of my lowest points ever as a Blade ,walking into Gigg Lane and hearing this team :
Sheff Utd
  • 25Long
  • 5Brayford
  • 6Basham
  • 34Edgar
  • 19McEveley
  • 22Reed
  • 35Hammond
  • 20Campbell-Ryce
  • 11Baxter
  • 27Calvert-Lewin
  • 29Adams

I have never known a manager blow as much good will so quickly as Clough did. The recruitment that summer after the FA cup semi was as big a shambles as I've ever known, The Maguire, Butler, O'Grady, Higdon, Coady, James Wallace, JCR, Brayford merry go round was a complete car crash and scuppered the season before it began.

Adkins was a total Bozo but Clough really missed an open goal in his second season.

I'm just thankful he's no longer here to cause any more damage.

Onwards and upwards, with a proper manager.

Given what we've seen, don't you question what different application might have brought from that team?

Ok, Hammond should have been carrrying the water bottles, but.....

:)

You're right about the car crash close season, but I wouldn't call it an open goal. Brayford, Coady and Maguire were as good as players come in this league and hugely difficult to replace to the same standard.

If we'd somehow kept them, then yup, I'd be talking about open goals too.
