Without Woodward, TC wouldn't have been the player he was. An honour to have both seen him play and meet him. I still have a signed Marlboro Light cigarette he signed (after he gave it to me) at the reunion dinner of that great team. It'll never get smoked!

You lucky lucky man. I would have loved to have seen Hagen but he was just before my time sadly. My grandad thought he was God, but I told him he couldn't have been because TC was!

I was only young at the time but my memories of Woodward were

1: He had brilliant technique when striking a ball, hit it so cleanly that he seemed to generate much more power than other players.

2: When he took corners...he seemed to shoot (not cross) the ball towards the 6 yard box.
He hit the ball with such power from a corner with a bit of swerve and you often thought he had a chance of scoring direct from a corner.

I reckon if you gave today’s players the heavier ball from back in Woody’s day they wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff from free kicks that they do now. The ball must have been twice as heavy back then, especially with a coating of mud on it from the atrocious state of the pitches. Puts his ball striking skills into perspective.

I had the pleasure of chatting to him for a couple of minutes at the 125th anniversary thingy at Ponds Forge. Just a really, really nice bloke.

Me as well. Chatted with him for a good few minutes, he was genuinely thrilled to be there.
