Of course he's not done bad for himself, he's a rich footballer! The point being he could have done better. He is blessed with extraordinary talent. He has not pushed himself to reach the level that talent might have attained.
Not many people in the world have done better than him- I'm not sure how we could evidence he's underachieved. He's slightly stocky (not fat) compared to many of the Prem stars. He can't grow taller and faster, etc.

He plays with a glorious creative freedom that most can't.

I've just given evidence of how i think he could improve. To clarify- lose weight, get fitter, work on stamina, study the game and tactics. Learn when to use the creative freedom at the right times and not repeatedly give the ball away. Do not kick opponents because you can't be bothered to chase them.

Fair enough, I am being blunt because it's so hot.

Think it's possibly unfair to suggest he can lose weight and get fitter mind you.

Overall he probably wouldn't be as good if he changed his game much. People don't usually ask creative genius types to stop being creative geniuses.

Edit: Could definitely get less yellows!

Do you think it would be impossible for a 28 year old man to lose weight and get fitter?
There's only so fit anyone can get.

I certainly couldn't dream of ever being as fit as Hamer. I'm naturally more slender than him, but I'd have had zero hope. I think it's over used criticism of him because he's a stockier Rooney type. I nearly said Jose Baxter type but that's definitely a bad example.

Purely playing devils advocate here but it depends how his fitness is being managed by the club. If it’s decided he’s in the ‘red’ zone and at risk of injuries they’ll scale back his training.

I’d love to know what sports scientists/dieticians the club employs.

Don't get the fitness criticism. He's one of a few (Hamer, Peck, Tanganga, O'Hare) that seems capable of getting through 90 minutes and despite his stockier build he's pretty quick and never stops running.

Potentially but he does tend to have issues with his calves at times beyond 70 minutes.

I find it difficult to critique if the ‘fitness issues’ are exaggerated or not.

For one, the team always seem to collectively and individually shit the bed in the 45-60 minutes slot, which is just after they’ve had 15 minutes supposedly regrouping.

The onset of this is invariably that we end up having to extol more effort to get back in the game.

That being said, it’s also used by almost every manager that “the players aren’t fit enough” to deflect to the last regime and to buy time for themselves.

They are pro athletes. To suggest they lack basic conditioning with all the stats available probably doesn’t stand up when it comes to metrics of distances travelled etc.

Having had a Selles pre-season and first couple of months when, to all accounts fitness wasn’t the priority, it takes a lot to build up that extra 15-20% that Wilder teams need.

This is because we play quite a heavy pressing game and are actually quite a mobile team. The running we do off the ball to win the ball back in the opposition half is impressive.

However playing this way is not sustainable over 90 minutes if the players aren’t conditioned to do it. This is part of the reason that we are good for 60 minutes and often in front and looking good, only to run out of steam in the last 30.

We try and combat that by bringing on fresh legs at the hour mark but the players coming on are just not the same quality as those going off. We don’t have another riedewald, Bamford or Brooks to bring on.

Last season we had Brooks and Rak Sakyi, Souza and Choudhury, and BBD and Campbell. So we were able to make subs in key areas without weakening the 11 on the pitch.

Or we could combat the fact that we run out of steam playing a high press game due to lack of fitness by changing tactics and just retain possession. Other teams see games out by changing tactics, we for some reason are incapable of it, perhaps the manager can only play one way every season.
