Is he or should I say has he been unfit last year or so or is this just us assuming he is

I mean he wasn’t as cough cough lazy as other players we had in past ( yes Hodges I’m thinking of you)

I think it is fair to at least wonder if he didn’t fully commit last year as he saw the writing on wall with regards to season but I’m not convinced he was unfit

I do think at this point it might be best for both if he can go somewhere else for a fee but if stayed I wouldn’t mind
Top assists in the championship when not fully committed.. we need to keep him at all costs.

Keeping players at all costs gets you into the mess seen over in the other side of the 6.

Unfortunately I think he will walk away on a free unless we get a promotion to a league where he's, imo, not good enough to play in as a regular starter.
And even then he might go.

Top assists doesn’t equal he was full ho gang the whole entire season

I’m not here to hate on Gus, I will be happy to keep him, it was just evidently clear he had probably his worst season whilst being here , some say he looked unfit, some suggested he wanted away and wasn’t up for it, both could be false or both could have some truth, likely only a select few will know

Hamer has the ability to carry us to a promotion push. There is an outside chance he gets his body and brain in gear to do that.

But the far more likely outcome is we lose him for nowt in a year. So make me an exec and I’d sell now for anything like decent money. And it’d make me very sad to do so.

Also with Brooks and Seriki it's only this season they have started to be able to play 90 mins consistently too. Before they seemed to be done by about minute 65.

Wilder has never taken fitness and diet seriously which is why Brooks and Seriki's faces don't fit because they do take it seriously.

I just don't know what to think anymore.

Last week I read that Brooks had been shipped out because Wilder doesn't like Christians.

There's no way Gus will get a Premier League move; he's just not good enough for a top-14 side and not fit enough for a bottom-6 one that doesn't have much of the ball. I can't see him moving to a more cash-rich Championship side, as he's on the decline and realistically only has one career move left in him, so he has no resale value to whoever takes a punt. It's either the Netherlands or nowhere. I actually think he looks slimmer in the training videos, although it might just be the Adidas shirts - if that's the case, I'm ordering 3.

If he was leaner and had Ronaldo's diet he'd easily get in one of the 7-20 teams. He's a class above 99% of championship players but he's clearly happy doing that without the extra grind and pressure being a premier league player.

He's always been a bit chunky:

Which is maybe why a top team hasn't gone for him, but he clearly is a very talented bastard.

I prefer, ‘low centre of gravity’ when referring to a player’s weight.

If he stays he'll have a good season, because he's undoubtedly playing for his last good contract

It's similar with Campbell

Now imagine if we could have both firing?

A promotion push is very possible. Even more so if we get Souttar and Phillips and they start 30+ games, and Cooper properly fit

It feels like time to decline but it could easily go the other way

Couldn't we persuade him to sign a one year contract extension so we can still get a fee for him next summer?

I hate the culture. We need a strong DoF to come in and basically say "Chris what the fuck is going on, we kick off in 2 hours. Peck has just rolled out of bed and Tyrese has just turned up with 4 Gregg's sausage rolls and doesn't look like he's sharing them".
Yeah, that’s just like reality 🤦‍♂️

Whilst I do agree that fitness has been an issue. It's been an issue for the past 5 seasons.
And fitness did not seem to be an issue on the rise to the PL and first season back...
Which includes times when Wilder was not manager.

It was very notable in my opinion how "unfit" the squad seemed last August and September.
Under Hecky it was almost less fitness but overall conditioning. Because he focused on training at full tilt all the time the players often picked up injuries and when we had a 3 game week looked knackered in the midweek games after about 70mins. There are always a few exceptions though who can handle that level of demand.
Hecky even noticed it in the promotion season and had to pull it back a bit around the November/Dec time when players were dropping like flies.

Selles may have said he was focusing on fitness but for whatever reason alot of the squad came back in poor shape. Hamer, Campbell, Burrows, Cooper were one's that looked less conditioned.

Wilder has had 1 pre-season since being back. I really hope the fitness and conditioning is pushed this summer to help us.

💯

Wilder's true stubbornness shines through with McGuiness. He is 100% a perfect Wilder signing, but because Wilder didn't sign him he got limited game time. It must have been a right struggle for him to play Bindon instead as he's another non wilder signing but he's a loan so a little more acceptable to his ego.
Nonsense.
He’s not played McGuinness cos he’s crap.
We all knew that before he signed and we’ve all witnessed it since.
I get that a lot of people don’t like Wilder but let’s not get into fantasy bollocks about it.

Can’t see many mentions of Hamer’s challenges in his private life, which has dramatically affected his fitness and mental state. There’s a chance he will be fitter this season now most of that has settled down and he’s through most of the turmoil.

He’s our only real game changer but he is in the final year of his contract. This is a Sheffield United board we’re taking about. Of course he’ll be sold if there is a sizeable bid for him. O can see both Hull or Cov going for that.

He played the same position but all his effort and defensive stats were way down. If he stays, he needs to be given a freer role or United just have to accept his limitations and have a left back who stays back

Or play a formation that doesn’t ask for players to allocate a percentage of their role in an area they are not strong.

If you stepped in tomorrow to the United job with this staff and with a limit on player trading, I don’t see how you arrive at 4-2-3-1. At best you have a current 3 of Chong, O’Hare and Hamer.

I’d argue that all are better as 10s and don’t give natural width.

The current manager hasn't shown the tactical flexibility to accommodate that. He has lots of strengths, but that's his main weakness

I think you may have posted your preferred formation elsewhere, but I can't find it right now... If you stepped in tomorrow, what formation would you play?

I’d play 3-4-2-1.

I think now Brooks has gone, you have no bona fide winger. I think a front three of Bamford supported by O’Hare and Hamer as two 10s allows good creativity and goalscoring.

You can then free Seriki and Burrows/McCallum who most would accept fit the wing back role well.

Already it feels you are making the best of what you have without unwanted or expensive recruitment.

Presently you have Peck, Arblaster and Rothwell for one role and then need to recruit a more robust defensive partner, be that Riedewald or Phillips, Choudhury, or similar, a couple anyhow. I wouldn’t be shocked if Wilder tried to get Lundstram back. Not saying I agree but it’s the sort of thing he’d consider.

Then a three allows to cover for some shortcomings. I’d probably have Tanganga-McGuinness-McCallum if the game was tomorrow but you’d focus recruitment there to improve that lot. If you end up ideally with maybe Walker-Souttar-Tanganga though appreciate a LCB is preferred.

Like the idea of us in attack with that, the downside for me is Burrows would be excellent attacking but terrible in defence so we would need a solid LCB, McCallum not so much going forwards but better in defence, if we could have a McBurrows it might work well!
