The radio Sheffield interview with one of the coaches yesterday was interesting. Talking about out plans this year.. pressing and running in behind front our forward players. None of which sounds like Hamer.

But you've got to have someone capable of getting the ball to these players running in behind and Hamer is 1 of very few at the club that can do that and that will try it.

Also with this tactic it opens up space for someone like hamer to have space and time.

Finishing in first spot doesn’t always guarantee you’ll adapt to the division higher up better than those finishing below you. Sunderland a case in point.

In the case of youth football it’s those that then kick on to ‘make it’; it’s seldom the ‘team’ all come through. Man U’s class of 92 is a bit of an example.

In this case when you go up you can selectively upgrade those who are not the stars. It’s far harder or at least more expensive to upgrade the lot.

So Coventry in my view will not recruit beyond a certain pool. That pool has its limits. For that reason, Hamer will be coveted by them as one of the few with top level experience already who would come to them. Plenty more won’t go there and plenty more that would lack any more experience than their current players.

If he does show interest then I’d say scope to squeeze them is there if we hold firm. They will offer 5m. I’d tell them come back with the 15m we paid you and we’ll talk. Get a deal at the 10-12.5m level. He’ll be good for a 3-4 year deal for them, next year in the Championship. Yes he doesn’t have the premium of being 26 when he joined us, but he has some proven ability at the top level which he didn’t have before. So if he’s good enough to help their PL survival campaign he’s good enough to be rated at eight figures. Otherwise, are they simply saying they don’t rate him that highly? They just see him as a bargain bin deal? Can’t have it both ways.

You're right, they aren't wealthy. Doug King made clear as such when he took over. They've maxed out their resources to get to where they are now.

How would you play it with them?

Hamer isn't desperate to leave and wanted a move abroad but nothing worthwhile came in. It's a move that United are happy to go with so we don't lose him for free. Hamer is very disillusioned with football as a whole and wanted a big pay day for what will be his last big move but this is the next best thing.

It's shit for us because even though he's past his best and in poor shape, he was still by far our most creative player. I don't think he will be a success at Coventry either and I think they'll be surprised at the player they get back. Take a look at his size and they way he played for them in their play-off campaign in 2023. He's simply not that player anymore sadly.

By all accounts he's a top bloke so I hope it works out well for him.

I heard he is quite settled here but like I said elsewhere a commute to Coventry isn't that difficult to do.

Rudoni, Grimes, Eccles & Torp also there I couldn't see Gus starting regularly, bar injuries, he's better off staying here imo

I dunno, you know.

It's an hour and half easy, each way, in peak time traffic. I like around here and when I nip home for the weekend, I can just be about arsed doing it twice in a weekend, let alone 5 times per week, and 6 times on a match day. It's very different to living around Leamington and nipping across to training. And for a bloke who is allegedly disillusioned with football.

But when Roygbiv speaks, that's about as low-key ITK as things get in my book. Sounds like it's progressing.

I agree with all of this, Royston. It's the start of the acceptance and healing journey, I guess?! I just can't see us utilising the cards we hold as Champagneblade says and milking the asking price for all it's worth. I'd also be touting him to West Ham, get a bidding war going. How lovely it'd be if we got the optimum price AND he didn't go to Cov 😂
 
There is always the remote possibility that he stays where he is happy, with his buddy Sam and Cal, extends his contract and powers us up into the PL.

I will say - and take this with a pinch of salt - they're not just after Hamer, they've enquired about Thomas at Stoke as well.

Stoke value him at 10-15, they've offered 9

The revenue has dropped by that amount. But there's no rule that the wage bill etc needs to be as high as last season

PSG have owners who are among the richest in the world & they operate in a completely different financial universe to most clubs.

Dortmund will no doubt look back and wish they hadn’t let Lewandowski leave on a free, but at the time they weren’t facing financial pressure. They’d signed him for next to nothing compared to what a top striker usually costs, so the risk felt manageable.

We don’t have that luxury. If you’re £10k into your personal overdraft, regularly speaking to the bank about financial issues, and someone offers you £2–3k to clear part of that debt, it’s something you have to seriously consider.

Reports suggest a £35m deficit and money owed to The Prince. So the question becomes simple: do you roll the dice on promotion, knowing the odds are slim or do you sell? As fans, of course we want him to stay. So do I. I’ll be gutted to see him in another shirt in the next week or so. But this is the reality of supporting Sheffield United.

He doesn’t guarantee survival - we finished bottom, and statistically one of the worst teams to ever play in that league.

He doesn’t guarantee promotion either, even in his peak spell with us, we finished 3rd. In my opinion, Ndiaye was the one who truly dragged us over the line. That’s the comparison I keep coming back to.

I also don’t think Coventry are getting the same player they sold. They’re a much stronger side now, so his impact won’t be as dramatic. He’s shown with us that he struggles with the intensity of playing centrally, and as for being a Premier League winger… I’m not convinced.

Yes I get that, but it doesn’t change the fact we’ve lost parachute payments, there’s new league financial restrictions in place & the owners have a winding up order against them due to monies claimed to be owed.

Are they in a position to let players leave for free if we’re offered £5m plus for a player in the last year of his deal?
