Greatest striking partnerships at United?

Gillespie wasnt a striker. He was more of a creative inside forward. When Jimmy Dunne became our main striker in the late 1920s and late 1930s he had a better goal ratio than Johnson. Fred Tunstall (left winger) provided a lot of crosses for Dunne to score hence the regular newspaper headlines "Tunny Dunn it"

Technically, correct, but we were probably playing five upfront at the time :)

Deane n Agana for me.

Would have loved to have seen Sharp n Evans, potential to be just as good.

Deane and agana followed by stead and hulse
Wed have stayed up if hulse had not got injured

Started going in the mid-7o's so since then:

Best partnership: Deane & Agana
Best finisher (albeit in lower divisions): Edwards

Interesting how everybody classes Agana as a legend. (I do too).

He scored 42 goals for us in 118.

Ched Evans scored 42 goals for us in 102.

On the other hand Agana had two promotions on his CV and Evans has one relegation.

Agana found the net in the top flight for us.

Evans couldn't hit a barn door in the Championship.

My favourite partnership was when(all too briefly) Hodges played off Deane91993 ?). Skill, guile and a little bit of devilment. Hodges had so much ability. It's just a shame he wasn't consistant with it as often as he should

The best one I've ever seen would be Edwards and Hatton

Totally agree. I remember beating Fulham 2 0 in premiership. It should have been 10 and Hulse and Steade we're outstanding.

Can anyone tell us how many games Hulse and Stead played together and how many goals they accumulated in those games? I suspect the answer will show how ridiculous it is to nominate them as a 'great striking partnership'.

It's the Bladesfans' way.

Spurs were Hodges boyhood team and he said that his partnership with Deano was just like Archibald and Crooks!

Here's one for Dazzler, I seem to remember there was a game in the 81/2 season where Sir Keith got his 100th League goal and Hatton his 200th, Tranmere rings a vague bell..................

I was there that day, but can't for the life of me think who were the opponents?

not ridiculous at all , they were a proper partnership who worked well together and knew each others strengths and weaknesses
As for the typical blades fans comment we're talking about blades partnerships in blades teams and there is not many to choose from deane and agana are the stand out pair and for me hulse and stead are a distant second

How many goals did their proper partnership produce? How many games did they play together? I think the answers will settle the issue.

Is this now just an umbrella phrase for anything you don't like?

Is this now just an umbrella phrase for anything you don't like?

No, it's a shorthand expression for the many strange characteristics that Blades fans exhibit. Their combination of antiquated, parochial, illogical attitudes is, I'm afraid, unique in football.

I'm afraid I occasionally disclose uncomfortable truths. One is that our fans routinely talk nonsense. Incidentally, Hulse and Stead started six games together - count them - six! Some 'great partnership', eh?

Its definition just seems to be growing exponentially, from a tolerance of hoof to expressing a fondness of managers past to think Stead was quite good. Eventually you'll be complaining that someone left a plug on the floor which you consequently trode on barefoot and proclaiming such carelessness as the Blades way!

Actually I do them a disservice. The great partnership featured 8 games. I overlooked the 2007/8 season when the partnership guided us to a 1-0 defeat at home to Palace and a goalless draw at Wolves.

The great partnership thus featured 8 starts, two wins, three draws and three defeats; 9 points from 8 games. We scored a grand total of 7 goals, of which the partnership contributed 4. They never scored in the same game. Great stuff.

This formidable pair actually spent the vast majority of their partnership sitting next to each other on the bench. A position which both have played far too often to be rated any higher than mediocre - and that's generous in Stead's case; he must wear wooden shorts.

While I agree with your summary of the partnership I think labeling Hulse as mediocre is a little unfair, he was excellent until he broke his leg and he didn't properly recover until after he shipped out.

That said if he'd put if that sitter or that penalty away against Blackburn we'd have stayed up so I don't really have any great affection for him.

I agree about Hulse. He had an excellent season for us before his dreadful injury. He was, not surprisingly, not the same player thereafter. An overall appraisal of his career, however, would suggest that he failed to live up to his early promise. Much the same could be said, with even greater force, for Stead.

I wouldn't have either back, but I appreciate I'm in a tiny minority. You see, they used to play for us - its the Bladesfans' Way!

:)

Edit - the failure to adequately replace Hulse was a crucial and fatal error by Warnock (and/or McCabe) that was instrumental in our relegation. Had they done so (and recruited a midfielder of quality) Tevez would now be a long forgotten irrelevance.

Deane and Agana were probably the best. I remember Gareth Taylor and Andy Walker being a decent pairing as well.

In the six games they played together ( before hulse leg break ) in the premiership they were a good partnership , im not saying that out of nostalgia im saying it because I cant think of one better aside from deaNe and agana who were miles better
Id love to hear your offerings on the subject , probably have to go back to your stats book
