Here are the updates to the 2 standard graphs that I am now doing.

Graph 1 shows our progress against the 3 benchmark sets of results which I created to achieve 3 different objectives when Hecky took over: -

a chance of the playoffs (71 points);
almost certain playoff achievement (78 points).
almost certain automatic promotion (90 points).

Although we have now fallen away from what was a very demanding set of results to get to 90 points, and in fact we would now simply have to win every one of our last 11 games!, I now include Bournemouth's results on the graph. Bournemouth have a tough run in, which I've listed at the end of this post, and we can only hope that they drop points and fall towards and below that 90 point line.

However, Graph 1 does show that we are still 2 Point ahead of my benchmark results to get to 78 points and almost certain playoffs.

The other interesting graph that I have been doing separately is comparing our season with Slav's season with Fulham in 17/18 - the season where they started fairly poorly and then went on to 88 points, 3rd place and won the Playoffs. In fact, they would have been second had they won their final game against Birmingham.

Graph 2 shows that the similarity for the whole season until the Millwall game was amazing - although we have fallen away a bit now. It does, however, show what sort of run can be maintained - and if we could match Fulham's 17/18 results from now until the end of the season we would get 83 points - probably enough for 3rd or 4th.

So, overall, we are well on target for the playoffs - and we can only keep winning and hope that Bournemouth start to get nervous as the finishing line gets closer. The good news is, that if we can get some pressure on them with 5 to go their last 5 are home to Fulham, away at Swansea, away at Blackburn, home to Forest and home to Millwall. So at least 4 losable games if you're under pressure, and on top of that they come to our fortress on April 9th.

Unless Bournemouth go on a tremendous run I think the automatic promotion spot will go to a team on a lot less than 90 or other recent years, possibly 85 or 83 might be enough if Bournemouth crumble.

Putting Bournemouth aside only ourselves, Huddersfield, Blackburn and Luton can get to 90 and to do so would now have to win 11 in a row (10 for Hudds) to do so.

For Bournemouth to get 90pts, they need to average 2.15pts per game till the end of the season. As a barometer, Fulham have achieved 2.17 over the season and are walking it.

Current form:

Last 6
Bournemouth 2.16ppg
Blades 1.83ppg

Teams achieving over 2ppg = Millwall, Fulham, Huddersfield, Luton

Last 8
Bournemouth 1.63ppg
Blades 1.88ppg

Teams achieving over 2ppg = Fulham, Huddersfield, Luton, Millwall

Last 10
Bournemouth 1.90ppg
Blades 2.10ppg

Teams achieving teams over 2ppg = Fulham, Huddersfield, Luton, Millwall

Last 12
Bournemouth 1.58ppg
Blades 2.08ppg

Teams achieving teams over 2ppg = Fulham, Huddersfield, Luton

if any team is going to nick that 2nd spot it’s Huddersfield, potentially B’mouth could crack, but Hudders have been on a tremendous unbeaten run and are are extremely hard to beat, I don’t see them falling unless they get injuries or run out of steam, they‘re the only team I’d be worried about in the playoffs too, so if it’s not us in 2nd I’d rather Huddersfield get it.

I didn't take 90 points as a prediction of what would be needed for second.

90 points or more has only been achieved by the second place team in 4 of the last 11 seasons, and back in November I just wanted a number which would give almost certain second place.

The reason I like the Fulham 17/18 plot is that it shows an actual highly-impressive run-in.

As I said in the post, if we match their impressive run-in results we would get to 83, and so I reckon 85 is probably about the absolute best that we can hope for.

I agree that 85 points could possibly be enough for second place.

The second placed team has got 85 points or less in 3 of the last 11 seasons.

It one more point than 3rd place thats important not how many points 2nd place got :)

A lot of people make that mistake. If that 3rd team had got 1 more point the top 2 would still have been ahead of them. Only if you were the team that finished second could you have got it with less points than they did. If you’re any of the other 22 you have to beat the total of the team who did finish second. It’s actually even more complex than that, as if one team gets more then another gets less, but statistically you can only really use the second place totals in a simple approach.

I thought Forest were the best team I have seen at Bramall Lane this season. Expect them to make the play offs unless they run out of steam with their cup run etc..
