Someone asked old Phippys boy about renaming the Jess Ennis stand to the Shred Stand and he replied with:

"In the simplest terms, this is a wonderful idea. In honouring Shred and all that he stood for, however, we are anxious not to do anything he himself would have found objectionable on a visceral level. We believing renaming a stand in his honour might fall in that category, as he was keen to avoid the lime light or to be elevated above others, We've probably always known this, but had it reconfirmed when he declined to be named our best supporter ever in connection with the 125th celebration. The stand will in due course be renamed by a paying sponsor. This will not prevent us from devising ways to keep David Spencer in lasting memory at the Lane"

Real shame as i've always liked it being called the Jess Ennis stand rather than having yet another sponsor.

I also don't really think naming a stand after a fan is the way to go either. If we rename it, then it should be the Mel Rees stand

I have a great idea. We could call it the Bramall Lane Stand :)

I assume companies will pay more money if the stand has their name rather than just having their name plastered all over it, but given that the stand's sponsored name changes all the time, I am not sure how much any such names lodge in supporters' minds and thus give vale for money to the sponsors.

Off the top of my head now, I can only name one sponsored stand - the En Tout Cas Stand from the 90's. I have no idea what the current sponsored names are.

I didnt realise Jessica Ennis was sponsoring us

we should call it the steelers stand as theyve just won the hockey title woohoo

And there you have it, at the end of the day, how many people actually care.

You're potentially opening up a can of worms erecting statues, naming bars, stands etc, who decides who is a legend, who is deserving or in reality, who pays the most money to the club for doing it. I'm never sure how much business companies get off the back of this kind of sponsorship but the fact they do it must mean they do.

My personal favourites, 'The Stanley Matthews Pricebusters Stand' at Bloomfield Road and Man City's attempt to get 'The Bell End' at their new stadium :)

I always used to think of Mange Tout for some reason!

Cushty.

John St ,Kop ,Lane end and South stand ,all it ever has been ,all it ever will be in our house. (since the south stand was built of course)

You youngsters.

Me = John Street, Kop, Lane End, New Stand.

My dad = Terrace, Kop, Cricket Pitch, New Stand.

My nephew = New Stand, Kop, South Stand, Lane End.

We've always had a new stand in our house(s), it just keeps changing ends/sides (although the Kop never qualified even when it was new).

If we can increase revenue from sponsor/s to advertise and/or rename the stand then we should. Considering the club runs at a significant operational loss, it would be daft to miss such an opportunity - the revenue could be the difference between signing/loaning a player and not.

I can sort of understand McCabe trying to piggyback on the back of Jess Ennis-Hill's success in 2012 although I disagreed with the naming a stand after her as she has little or no involvement (or interest?!?!) in the club.

Essentially for me (and I suspect many others), the names we call each stand won't change nomatter what they are officially called or who sponsors them.

We called the South Stand "the New Stand" for about 20 years!

I grew up with the South Stand being the Laver Stand so for me it's Kop, Laver Stand, away end or Bramall Lane End , depending on how the mood takes, and the family stand.

I still sometimes call the south stand the 'New Stand'. That's what it was when I started going. When people use the sponsors' name for one of the stands I often have no idea what they're talking about.

I once read an article somewhere on football stands being named after people linked with their clubs and under all the usual "Derek Pavis stand" "Alex Ferguson stand" etc. we were listed because we had named one of our stands after "John Street" :D

I wish I knew where that article was.

In the early 60s, United played Spurs the year after they'd done the double - a temporary stand was put up on the cricket pitch side of the ground, obviously to get more quids in.

It was made of scaffolding, and when the contractors arrived to take it down on the Monday, it came down on it's own - if they'd wanted a sponsor for that one, it would have to be John Heaths

Following her decision to "jump on the bandwagon" a few months ago and create some publicity for herself at our expense, I'm delighted to hear that her name will be coming off the BL Stand ...... should have been removed ages ago as she has no interest in the Club.

Stands should be named for paying sponsors or Club icons only imho.

I've tried to steer clear of this topic.... but anyway, I do have to agree Darthblade. I can't remember any of the Birmingham clubs with a Denise Lewis Stand. Never been happy about it. Tin hat placed on head.

Then again, I never been able to get enthusiastic about athletics and that probably clouds my opinions on the matter. The sooner it's off the better. IMHO.

Totally agree but does anyone even use the sponsored names? Never hear anyone in the ticked office asked for a seat in gac stand. Even on our website it says kop, South, John street etc... It's pretty much free money

If I ever owned Sheffield United then I would change several things.

1. We'd play in red & white stripes (and not that fucking abomination that we've got for next season) in every match unless there was a colour clash.
2. The stands would be Kop, New South, Bramall Lane and John Street
3. I'd buy the shop on the corner of Shoreham Street and Cherry Street and I'd rename it "Bri & Irene's"

Like your dad, I can remember that when the Bramall Lane stand was built it was regarded as the "new" stand. We even sang a song about it (to the tune of "Land of Hope and Glory";

We love Sheffield United
Best team in the land
We love Sheffield United
With their brand new stand!

Wonder if Ched Evans could sponsor it?

No tin hat needed at all......we are a commercial organisation and with a wage bill of £9M we need all the income we can get,
and that includes a club shirt that sells, not one that doesn't.

If I had finance available I'd love to sponsor the stands and simply have them named after club legends.

Tin hat removed. I agree with most of the Fellow Blades on this thread, if someone wants to pay the club to sponsor a stand so be it, I will sit in the Kop this evening, look across to the South Stand where me and Mrs HB watched our first match together, across to John Street where I saw my first match. And then to Bramall Lane Stand where I have seen so many fans from all corners of the country.

You are lucky you can sit in the kop - me and the nipper are too tall for it to be comfortable.
