Goodbye Jess Ennis Stand!

I once read an article somewhere on football stands being named after people linked with their clubs and under all the usual "Derek Pavis stand" "Alex Ferguson stand" etc. we were listed because we had named one of our stands after "John Street" :D

I wish I knew where that article was.
Ive got a John Street working for me ,seriously. :)

In the early 60s, United played Spurs the year after they'd done the double - a temporary stand was put up on the cricket pitch side of the ground, obviously to get more quids in.

It was made of scaffolding, and when the contractors arrived to take it down on the Monday, it came down on it's own - if they'd wanted a sponsor for that one, it would have to be John Heaths
Hmmmm.. I went to that game and don't remember a temp stand on cricket side that evening??

6' 2", My nipper is 6' 4" - cannot sit on any of the seats and fit my legs straight in front of the seat in front.
It's a bloody awful stand for tall people.

UTB
Its crap for small people too as we can't see the goal/6 yard box in front of The Kop when everyone stands up!

You youngsters.

Me = John Street, Kop, Lane End, New Stand.

My dad = Terrace, Kop, Cricket Pitch, New Stand.

My nephew = New Stand, Kop, South Stand, Lane End.

We've always had a new stand in our house(s), it just keeps changing ends/sides (although the Kop never qualified even when it was new).

Me

Bramall Lane End - Away End

John Street - John Street

Cherry Street - New Stand

Shoreham Street - The Kop

pommpey

The kop needs demolishing and a complete re build at some point, I sit on row R which is OK but much further back and you cant see the goal line and then there is always the posts likely to get in your way too. The top corner built on stilts has dropped a few inches too making it even harder to see the goal when everyone stands up. I think anyone over 6ft would struggle for leg room on the kop.

Got the date wrong - 2 years after the double!

5th October 1963 3.00 p.m. United 3 - Spurs 3

Attendance 33,606

50+ years of following United addles your brain!

The only time a temporary stand was erected on the cricket pitch was in 1960 for the FA Cup 6th Round game against Wednesday. The stand held 3000 and raised the then capacity from 57,000 to 60,000.

Not sure that's right Jock, but if it is, I'll bend my knee to your greater knowledge

Have to say Jud, I do recall the temp stand for the 1960 cup qf, (my dad told me, I wasn't there) but as I started going the season after, my memory of another instance of a temp stand is blank.
And like you say, 54 years of force feeding myself on SUFC, has left my memory unreliable these days....

Your right MB, it certainly needs revamping, why they built it with posts obstructing peoples views is anybodys guess, probably because it which cheaper.

Instead of having sponsors names on the stand why not have past players names for everyone to see and give inspiration to the current players.

Whatever the BL stand is called I will always support Jess Ennis. It is a shame some fans judgement was clouded by a rapist that lead to the abuse she received after she said virtually nothing.

If we can increase revenue from sponsor/s to advertise and/or rename the stand then we should. Considering the club runs at a significant operational loss, it would be daft to miss such an opportunity - the revenue could be the difference between signing/loaning a player and not.

I can sort of understand McCabe trying to piggyback on the back of Jess Ennis-Hill's success in 2012 although I disagreed with the naming a stand after her as she has little or no involvement (or interest?!?!) in the club.

Essentially for me (and I suspect many others), the names we call each stand won't change nomatter what they are officially called or who sponsors them.

How about 'The fuckin' white shirt stand'?

Saying nothing at all would have been better still.

From "Sheffield United Football Club - The First 100 Years" by Denis Clareborough

March 12th 1960 FA Cup 6th Round v Sheffield Wednesday 0-2; "Record post-war attendance - A temporary stand seating 3,200 had been erected on the cricket side"

"Helped by a temporary stand in front of the cricket pavilion, which provided 3,200 extra seats, a crowd of 59,692 saw United win everything in the game but the victory their play deserved"

From "The Blades & The Owls - A pictorial history of the Sheffield derby matches" by Keith Farnsworth;

"This was the day when a temporary stand erected in front of the old cricket pavilion provided 3,200 extra seats and a 59,692 Bramall Lane crowd"

From "Sheffield Football - A History, Volume I" by Keith Farnsworth;

"This was a tie that attracted a 59,692 crowd (over 3,000 were seated on a temporary stand erected on the cricket side).

Since the capacity of the Lane was 57,000 in the early sixties there would have been little point in erecting a temporary stand for a game against Spurs with an expected attendance in the 30,000s.

Agreed. I don't have anything against Ennis, the bile she received from some was a disgrace. I would imagine what she said about not having her name on the stand was over exaggerated by the press.

That said, I'm glad they will be changing the name of the stand, however, would much prefer it be named after a legendary player/someone associated with the club rather than a sponsor.

'Will in due course' could be a long time. I fear another spectacular own goal by the club. Imagine renaming the stand just before/if she retained her Olympic title:eek:

Chelsea have the Shed End, we should have the Shred End.
