Have we actually signed a keeper on loan (I've seen nothing on the O/S to suggest we have) or will we go with Bennett and Aksalu tomorrow?

Heard we're after Steve Simonson at Stoke (personally I don't see the point loaning another goalie). Unless something happens this afternoon then it will probably be Bennett tomorrow.

Aksalu has now had two reserve games under his belt and, as far as I'm aware, did ok.
Paddy is back in the frame next month.
Bennett has never let us down.
Seems unnecessary to get a loanee in at this stage unless it's part of a longer-term plan.

give aksalu a go.. what is the point of getting these players in if we never give them a chance?

In total agreeance with this.
If we see enough in them to sign them, give them a chance.

we dont need to bring in another goalie , Bennett has always done well for us when he has stepped up to the first team.

Simonsen's here now, i'm happy with that, big lad, decent keeper and a bit of presence about him! on O/S now.

From t'OS: LINKY

The Blades have brought in goalkeeper Steve Simonsen on a month's loan from Stoke City.

And the 30 year old who joined up with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday morning will be plunged straight into the starting line-up at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

With Mark Bunn having been recalled by Blackburn Rovers earlier in the week, Kevin Blackwell was faced with choosing between Ian Bennett, Estonian newcomer Mihkel Aksalu or trying to bring someone else in:

"Ian Bennett is our recognised number two and I decided that with the position we are in we needed a new number one.

"It wouldn't be right to throw Mihkel in at this stage of his career - he is still learning English, never mind not having played any senior games yet.

"If he was to make a mistake on debut the fans would remember that and we don't want to damage his confidence straight away - he is basically one for the future.

"Steve Simonsen is a very good goalkeeper with a real presence and he was a big feature of Stoke's promotion to the Premiership. We are taking him for a month and will see what the situation is then.

"I have to thank Tony Pulis and Stoke for letting Steve out. They understand how difficult it is to get good players in on loan at this time because most clubs are involved in either promotion or relegation."

Was told before Bunny went back that this was happening, not sure why they waited so long to finalise it/announce it though.

Bennett must be delighted. I'm happy with Simonsen, but surely the whole point of having a decent number 2 is to let him step up when the number 1 is unavailable. Bennett has been here years now, knows the club, and importantly has trained extensively with the first team squad. If his contract is up in the summer I can't imagine he'll be too keen to stay on. The same thing happened at Leeds as I recall - initially favoured by Blackwell, then ditched for Neil Sullivan early doors and remained out of the team until NW signed him in 2006.

I have nothing against Steve Simonsen and he's a decent keeper, but this is utterly pointless. Paddy is back next month and Bennett is a perfectly capable stop gap.

It's just another player that isn't good enough to get in a PL side and will not have the required level of commitment we need because he knows he's going back in a month.

More KB floundering and lack of bottle.

Benno was looking around before his latest deal was renewed.

The idea with the latest was that he got into the coaching side and not just a player contract.

Think this is a very sensible move. Bennett does have a tendency to pick up injuries and if we ended up going to Cardiff with only a completely untried 'keeper available, there would be uproar on here.

It does sometimes seem like he's damned if does and damned if he doesn't.

Can anyone remind me of the terms of Bunn's loan?

I wish Robinson had injured himself on September 2nd 2009. Would Bunn have been called back then? Is he seriously going to play against Chelsea on Sunday? Will be well worth a watch with Drogba pinging those free kicks at him.

At least Simo is well over 6 foot.

Quite interesting that a Premiership manager thinks he's worthy of a recall, but a number of Blades didn't think he was worthy of being our stand in.

It would have been alot more sensible to sign a decent keeper and a decent centre-back last summer rather than Ched Evans. And a left-back and centre-midfielder now I think about it as well.

Fair point, but in the event that he did pick up an injury in tomorrow's game, we would have 3 days to get another keeper such as Simonsen in. Which in the current era of cost-cutting, would be a better move financially.

I really don't understand what people are complaining about here. Bennett has let us down in the past and isn't good enough to be first choice in a play-off chasing team. Simonsen is clearly a better keeper than Bennett, Aksalu and arguably Bunn too. Do people not want to see the team improved?

Regarding Aksalu, the plan is clearly for Bennett to be moved out next season and Blackwell has planned ahead by bringing in a younger, potentially better replacement as Paddy's number two. It gives him a few months to acclimatise, learn English and have a pre-season before he's called upon for the first team squad. Again, what's the problem with that?

I'd second that, I can't understand the complaint.

Completely agree with Blackwell, Aksalu would be slaughtered if made a mistake.

Far from it.

When a player is brought into a team, he is given a lot of support from the terraces.

Especially with this game being away from home, there would be a lot of understanding people there if he made a mistake.

You're right, I can remember the shouts from behind the net at Turf Moor of 'Don't worry Lee, it wasn't your fault'

:p

If the kid's English is so bad he won't understand what's been said anyway.

They don't have a choice. they can't get loans can they?

Bunn is nowhere near PL standard at present and anyone who thinks different is deluded. Simonsen is a better goalie. Happy to have him.
