Its a difficult one this, i see what people are saying about 31 years of top tier football and never being out of the top 2 tiers and millions of years. I think the problem with us is yes lots of excitement promotions, cup runs, playoffs but they are so short lived after a promotion comes a relegation, after a good cup run comes a semi final defeat, after a playoffs semi win comes a shocking display in a final and ultimately a defeat. The problem with us is there is no joy at the end of all the excitement.

You are a strange one. You really would prefer only 10 years of top tier football (compared to Coventry's 31), never winning anything (compared to Coventry's FA Cup) and until next season never being in the bottom two tiers (compared to our 7 years there).

I think you might be in a small minority here....

Time to start getting worried when Darren calls you "a strange one" ;)

The central question I suppose is "what do you get out of being a football supporter"?
If I was only interested in watching trophies being lifted I could support Man United.
If I wanted to be assured of watching top-flight football every year my best bet would be Everton.
I have to support the Blades because it's in my blood via my Dad and there's no choice to be made.

No, the club I'm lumbered with is unlikely to ever win the Premiership or challenge for Europe.
That being the case, how is a supporter supposed to get their kicks? The type of joyride we've had this season.
It's certainly not by finishing 11th to 14th every year in The Premiership.
Content just to be playing the big boys and restricting them to maybe 2 or 3 goals against.

Looking back, the seasons I've enjoyed most have been those where we've won most of our matches and scored around 100 goals. That simply wouldn't have happened in the Premiership.
I enjoyed the Premier League survival seasons too but only because the novelty never had chance to wear off.
I like the variety and the tension and the excitement. If that's strange, so be it.

Isn't it obvious? As much as long suffering fans like me would just dearly love to jump ship and support someone else, it is a physical, emotional impossibility. I can't fuck off and follow the admirable flair and footballing porn of Manchester United. I can't bring myself to stand either on the terraces or (as was yesterday) twenty four inches away from my 60" HD telly and cheer anyone else on when they score. Yesterday (as with the Wigan match a while ago) I could not sit down. I want us to win, so badly. I want us to succeed, if with bonus chips at the expense of the shower of fuckers in S6 then all the better. Yes, it is misery. Yes, as a supporter I have every right to point out where we are going wrong (in my opinion) as have you to uphold your (misguided IMO) opinion that all is well and this is acceptable. I won't be happy until I see our team lined up in a centre circle with fireworks and streamers, like a few years ago when I trudged out of the Milennium Stadium and saw Wolves's joy burst overhead. To accept anything else is ridiculous. We are the Blades, for fuck's sake.

pommpey

I agree with what you say, apart from the bit I have highlighted. Nowhere in any of my posts have I tried to claim that all is well and acceptable. Not once, so I don't know why you've written that. All I have been pointing out is that it is simply not accurate to claim that we always blow the important games. That is a different thing entirely from saying that all is "well and acceptable". It clearly isn't and we probably are top, or pretty close to the top, of the under achievers league.

By the way, we did actually have fireworks at Bramall lane in 2006 when we won our last trophy.:D

Just to add to this: I have lived in Munichfor 20 years. There are two clubs in Munich, Bayern and TSV 1860. In this time Bayern have won the Bundesliga too many times to mention, they have won the Champions League, appeared in several semis and finals. This year they will probably win the Champions League again. TSV 1860 have won nowt. Sometimes in the 3rd tier, short time in the 1st tier and now in the second division. They are normally crap. But the 1860 fans get more out of beating Hamburg St Pauli than Bayern fans do from beating Juventus. I know because I was at both games. Bayern fans boo every time they loose, 186o fans have a beer. Going to an 1860 game is always better than going to a Bayern game. Winning everything is not always what its cracked up to be

And things could be worse. We could be blowing an 8 point lead at the top of the premier league! There, that's probably doomed Manchester City to a poor second half.......

Could be worse, we could be Rangers fans. They blew a 15 point lead at the top of the SPL, and that was BEFORE the 10 point deduction!!
