I think theres more to this. I dont think an athlete just drowns like that but Iam not going to speculate on here either. I just hope the police can establish the exact events surrounding it. Great guy. Great footballer.

Yeah let's leave the speculation to the red tops, no need on here.

I am devastated by this news. I have been avoiding social media all day and pretending it isn't true.

GB was everything we love in a blades player - desire, ferocity, leadership and a connection with the fans

RIP George. The angriest, most brilliant player of a generation.

Getting the thread back on track... I'm still reeling today.

Daft as it sounds what I keep coming back to is that when we have the inevitable reunions down the years where they get all the members of that promotion winning side back down the Lane for a fundraising dinner, or for a heroes' welcome before some big match or other, he will never be there for it.

I think we tend to take for granted that Lane legends of George's standing will always pop back now and again down the years, be knocking around the club, maybe even take in the odd match with the fans from time to time. But he will never get the chance to do that, and I just hope he knew how much he meant to everyone who had the pleasure of watching him play. RIP you incredible Furious/Gorgeous man.

Now it’s all been officially announced and fully verified, I’ll say my piece.

Absolutely distraught and devastated on the news. Such a young age at 31. One of the best players I’ve ever seen play at right back for us. Gave me many happy memories of which I’ll cherish supporting the blades.

Also a top class bloke outside football. Have met him a couple of times, always made time, just a normal guy who loved his craft and spending time just being a simple human being.

Rest easy Starman. Gone far far too soon.

Just can’t take it in.
In tears reading the tributes to him especially from his former teammates and Blades. One of our best right backs we’ve ever had, on the pitch. And off it, we’ll what a fantastic and lovely man, he was.
There are no words, to explain how we all feel,or to make it in some way, more bearable
My thoughts and condolences go out to his family.
In due course I hope the club can come up with a fitting tribute to one of our finest of all time, and truly one of our own.

Just reported in the Kathimerini Athens broadsheet that post mortem has taken place and cause of death given as drowning, with toxicology report to follow.
I just hope to God it wasnt another Gary Speed type scenario. The first thing I noticed was his wife and daughter were not in Greece. I dont know if he had other children who were at school and thus precluded his wife being with him but I hope it wasn't some form of . . . yeah.

Seems such a wonderful bloke wonder if he was also quite vulnerable. Keep us posted Joeydee. Its not nice and I know what is like to have your Dad taken from you thousands of miles away from home at a young age, but its about George and his family and it is so desperately sad.

One thing as fans we must do is channel that 'Starman' energy into the Leeds game. He would've wanted that.

UTB RIP GB

One thing we mustn't do as a fan group is blindly speculate.

I would hope the club will organise a tribute testimonial game against Olympiacos.

Arguably our greatest ever backline (certainly that I've ever seen) that rarely got changed but for injury or suspension.

If we had these 6 players in their prime last season, we don't concede half as many goals as we did.

Still not really sunk in. George was a great footballer for us, a popular character in the dressing room, and it seems he was popular with opposition players. He was a nice bloke outside of football as well, Mrs G used to see him and John Egan in Virgin Active gym, when she used to go there a while back, and says he was always friendly, always smiling, always saying hello to people.

On the pitch he was a fierce competitor, as we all know, and for a bloke of small-ish stature, he had the heart of a Lion. Even in our worst games, he never hid, never stopped trying, never gave less than 100%, and when it came to confrontation with opposition players, you would have thought he was 6ft 5, the way he went face to face with them, never backing down.

Scored some great goals for us, went to the Premier League with us.

When all is said and done, it's not the hole that he leaves behind for us fans, it's the hole he leaves in that young family of his.

RIP George Baldock.
