i remember arriving at Midland station from Manchester and there was a message on a chalk board saying that United's match verses someone or other was postponed because a Second World War unexploded bomb had been found near the ground

Is this something else I've imagined ? Seven sixes are 42

I reckon that was mid 80s.

Basterd Luftwaffe ,was Bramall Lane targeted because it was a troop training place during the war?

Yeh I'd forgot about that blast from the past mate

It was down to a failure of strategy.

They were supposed to follow the route of the River Don as many of the steelworks/munitions factories were situated there.

But they mistakenly bombed the area around the River Sheaf instead so Bramall Lane copped for it as a result.

Did the Lane get bombed on the night of the Sheffield blitz or was it in another raid?

I seem to recall there was snow and they'd sweeped the snow to read UXB on the pitch!
that's right. I thought it was the main picture that night. Didn't it say "off uxb"?

I remember going to my mates nans en route to the lane as per norm wondering if it was going to be on or not due to the snow. Fully expecting it to be off anyway. Couldn't believe it when I heard it was off due to a UXB and would have been played otherwise.

I'm sure there was another unexploded WW2 bomb around the BDTBL area either in 2007 or 2008 but it was sorted out and didn't affect our upcoming match??

Can i ask, and i understand this may seem harsh, but why start a thread with a title like that, in the wake of the last 2 weeks?
Why not include in the thread title something like 'back in the 80s'

I think the bomb is now in Kelham Island Museum.

Yes it was Oldham mid 1980's
I came staggering out of the Mulberry Tavern that day and walked to the Lane with my mates

Everyone was walking the other way and telling us the game is off because they've found a bomb

We didn't believe them in our drunken state so kept on walking towards Shoreham Street only to find that the street was cordoned off

Still couldn't believe it even when we turned back and started walking the other way

Hitler was a pig.

Albert Speer studied at Sheffield University in the early 30s,and often visited Bramall Lane during his stay,he made enquiries about who had dropped the bomb on the Lane, and had the Pilot court marshalled, demoted and sent to the Russian Front

I lived in Lancashire at the time and started to drive over at my usual time and on the M62 listening to the radio when it announced the match postponed. Looking at the bright warmish weather I couldnt believe it was weather that caused the game to be off and somehow thought this was a prank so continued driving to Sheffield and almost got to the ground when reports about the bomb convinced me it was off - couldnt believe that Hitler not the weather had called off our match !

I was at my friend's house in London that weekend. When we came home we looked at the football headlines on Ceefax and one of them was "Unexploded bomb causes match postponement". My friend (a Chelsea fan) said to be "Bet it is Sheffield United". We then put the page number on and he was right!. I was able to go to the match at an re-arranged date

I can't imagine the student Albert Speer out on the piss in Broomhill & falling over in a doorway whilst eating a vegan veggie kebab

It was in Sheffield,Speery got his love for dripping, plus if you look at the plans for Germania,it is upscaled versions of the City and Town Hall

Well given that this is close season and we're on a Sheffield United supporters board and people are talking about all sorts of quirky oddities and historical facts about the club this memory sprang to mind. One contributor to the thread provided a link to a United fans blog which highlights the extremely unusual reason for postponing a football match. Given that people died in the Sheffield Blitz you could probably argue that the United fans Blog was also disrespectful. What, in my opinion is disrespectful is someone taking the trouble to reply to my original message and imply that I ought to be ashamed for starting a perfectly innocent thread.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity , and nothing more, would you mind telling me how old you are ?

Bomb sights were rudimentary and aerial navigation poor, so many bombs missed their intended targets (similarly for the RAF). They wanted to hit the steelworks of the East End but from 10,000 feet up in the dark, Sheffield has few distinguishing features. London for example was 'easy' in that you fly in from the East and follow the Thames and it's very distinctive curves. The Don and Sheaf are only a few feet wide until they get to the City Centre and so must be very difficult to spot.

There were also planned diversionary tactics in place, so fields near Anston/Todwick and also near Bradfield, had pre-prepared fires to light once the pathfinders had gone over. The idea was that the main bomber force would fly to the fires, where they thought they'd hit major targets that were burning, and drop their load there.

I live in S10 and various odd stray bombs fell around Crosspool/Crookes too.

There's an excellent old map showing where all the bombs fell and it is covered on this site:
