United’s cup adventure continued after a thrilling 3-2 victory over fellow Championship side Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane on Sunday lunchtime. The Blades trailed twice but fought back twice and then with the game heading to extra time, Tommy Doyle scored an absolute screamer blasting in a 25 yard shot into the top corner to win the game. The draw pits United against the juggernauts of Manchester City but it is still an incredible achievement to even get to the final four and the first time a lower league side has made it this far for 8 years.

Heckingbottom only made one change as McBurnie was in for Jebbison. There was a bigger bench for the semi final with 9 players able to selected and this included Coulibaly and Arblaster. Blackburn started with Brereton Diaz up top and they had been in good recent form and were backed by a large 6,000+ away following.

Rovers began the better side attacking well in the opening minutes and winning the loose balls but United got a foothold in the game and McAtee had a good chance after Egan’s ball forward but Pears made the save before Doyle had an effort from distance. United now were moving it around well and Ndiaye was looking a constant threat with his close control and running.

The Blades were forcing the visitors back but from a break, they created he moment that led to them taking the lead. The ball was played down the United right hand side and the cross came over too easily leading to a Gallagher effort that Robinson seemingly did well to block. However after the ball went out, there was a delay and the realisation with VAR in operation, that there was a possibility of a penalty kick. Sure, enough referee Robinson was told to consult the monitor and that invariably only brings one decision. The inevitable penalty was given and Robinson was given a yellow card for the offence. BRERETON DIAZ took the kick and whilst Foderingham went the right way, it was struck well enough to go into the corner and the away side led.

United tried to respond and Ndiaye again was the main threat, getting into areas and drawing defenders. The home side won a corner and as the ball was cleared out Lowe came onto it and kept it down but the shot was going well wide before it struck GALLAGHER (OG) and deflected the other way wrong footing Pears and nestling into the corner.

Rovers did try and respond and Hyam had a header tipped over by Foderingham and Gallagher also glanced a header wide as United were struggling to deal with the high ball. It had been a really even game and very open – a pulsating contest with both teams trying to attack and neither settling back or playing safe.

After the break, United came out strong and some good football saw the ball switched between Doyle to Lowe and then Ndiaye before McAtee made a mess of the ball coming across when well placed. At the other end Rovers broke and United’s shape was left in tatters as the ball was played inside and Pickering was in an almost identical position to when he scored at Ewood Park, but Foderingham made the low save and the got straight back up to deny Brereton Diaz on the follow up. It was two fantastic chances but McAtee had an even better chance when Travis inexplicably played it straight into the path of the young City loanee but he hit his finish straight at the keeper when it seemed easier to score.

United were made to pay as Rovers scored against the run of play. The ball was played into the Blades half but the home side squandered several chances to clear before Lowe telegraphed his pass and the ball was played forward and SZMODICS broke through and showed the composure McAtee lacked, as he slid it into the far corner away from Foderingham.

Carter was booked for upending McBurnie before Sharp came on for Robinson but Rovers now looked more likely to add to their lead and Hedges on the angle hit an effort that hit the inside of the near post and bounced across the line and somehow out. Another ball went across the line as for the first time in the game, United were struggling after having lots of ball and opportunities to score but were now chasing the game. Brittain and Wharton replaced Hedges and Rankin-Costello as the visitors maybe were looking to just take the sting out of the game but at this stage the home side were getting a bit frustrated.

However, out of nothing, United were level. Lowe did well down the left and turned it inside and MCBURNIE turned his man and put his strike into the corner past Pears. It was not the cleanest of finishes but in a quiet game, the front man found a moment of quality to get parity in the game.

United now looks the more likely winner. Baldock was replaced by Bogle and United now were flooding forward with bodies but also had to be wary of Rovers on the break who at this stage seemed to be looking for extra time. Doyle had a low shot saved before Berge showed great desire to drive wide before Rovers cleared. The game ticked onto 90 minutes and Ndiaye robbed Morton and fed McAtee who pulled it back to Berge. The ball was rolled across to DOYLE who took a touch and drilled an absolutely sensational finish from 25 yards into the top corner of the goal. The visiting players appealed for a foul in the build up but this seemed desperate whilst United celebrated in front of the Kop.

Basham came on for McAtee as United had four minutes to see out which they did well. Ndiaye fed Bogle who had a shot blocked at point blank range before a late corner saw Pears up but McBurnie headed clear and the final whistle went immediately to draw a frantic finish to a close. As United’s players mobbed each other, the strains of Doris Day and Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que sera, sera) emanated around Bramall Lane as the majority of fans stayed in the ground to salute their Wembley bound heroes as they left the field.

United – Really bizarre one actually. For the most part we played really well and some good attacking, positive football. We scored 3 goals and had numerous other chances. I thought we looked good on the ball for long stretches and had loads of possession and forced them back. However, we were also wide open and Rovers could argue they had as many chances, scored twice, led twice and hit the post too. It was a game they could have won for the opportunities they had, even though I felt United always looked better in terms of ability on the ball. We were a bit kamikaze again and I suppose it worked as we outscored them but it was nervous to watch. We kind of just went for it, even when level which at least was entertaining. The negative side of me thinks we needed to be more solid and have a better defensive approach but then we can point to Luton and think how boring that was! I was concerned how often and always we got opened up and if they had been secure they could have scored 3 or 4 more goals from some guilt edged chances 2nd half. However, I also thought we got into some great areas but just lacked the killer instinct too.

We looked far more fluent than we have at home for some time though. I thought after a poor start, we took control 5 mins in and up to the goal looked like scoring and Ndiaye was excellent. We got into some good areas and forced them back but then bad defending let them in too easily and the penalty is given. It probably is one – even though VAR is annoying – as his hand does stop it going towards the goal. We recovered and scored a lucky goal but then defended badly and they could have had a few headed goals before Ndiaye and McAtee look good again and we take over. Really end to end. After the break McAtee missed a decent chance but they then miss two really good ones or two well saved from Wes if you want to be accurate but they will be disappointed not to take one. We then have a sitter missed from McAtee put on a plate and they make us pay with a break where again the defence goes missing even after an error from Lowe. We were behind despite playing quite well. For the next spell we lost any kind of momentum and belief. They hit the post and could have had another from a few balls across. The Sharp sub is an odd one and we did not really look like scoring but then McBurnie, was poor, takes his goal well.

After this, you felt there was only one winner. They had made their changes before the leveller and were set up to defend so hard for them to change this and United put the pressure on and you sensed if anyone was going to win in, it would be us. No-one quite saw the goal coming the way it did maybe though! A superb long-range strike. Sadly you still had fans (me included) wondering if VAR may intervene with a man down and it massively takes away the joy in the stands sometimes. A fantastic way to win the game though and we saw it out after this.

Just a superb game. We attacked well and we looked good when we went forward. We still look a bit all over the shop at the back and too open. It finished 3-2 but could have been 2-3 or anything really with so many chances for both teams. In the end we nicked a tight game where both teams offered up too many chances for the other. It was odd though as I felt we shaded it in terms of overall play, but the better chances were made by them I felt and Wes made more saves or harder saves. They led twice and hit the post at 1-2 so another day they go on and win but after we did get level, you sensed the momentum was back with us and it proved.

Great to see the celebrations at the end and hear Que Sera, Que Sera as you do not hear this much at your home ground of course and the players looked so excited to make it to Wembley (only 6 players have played there – Norwood, Lowe, Bogle, Davies, Brewster and Foderingham before) as for many they may never play there. The draw a few hours later of course was not the one wanted but all the other ties went with form and whilst we invariably would have had a better chance v Man Utd or Brighton, all three opponents would have been very difficult. City of course will be incredibly so but it still is a day out and a chance to maybe upset the world! I think it will be really tough to even get close even with City playing Bayern and then Arsenal either side of the ties, and tough for McAtee and Doyle not to play too. However, we need to just think of how well we have done to get there and teams from lower leagues do not routinely get to Wembley (Blackburn for instance never played at the new Wembley) and also to consider (as bland as it is) the financial repercussions of getting there which the club clearly needs with the current situation.

As I said v Spurs, sometimes what comes next or what might happen or thinking about winning a cup etc is immaterial and you just have to enjoy the day and the fact you win a big game in a thriller at your ground and whatever happens v City, no one can take that away. Winning the cup is a dream that is very, very unlikely in any of our lifetimes. Beating City is almost impossible too! So just enjoy today and a fantastic day where the Blades again made us proud.

We have two weeks off now and of course face a difficult away game when we come back and Boro still breathing down our necks but the break may help some (granted some away with their countries) and we can go again for the final 9 league games and 1 cup game. We have 4 matches before we play the cup semi-final so hopefully, we can pick up some points and remain in second before the big run in where we will have a lot of games at home and can just go for it regardless of the City game which I think most expect a defeat and go more in hope than expectation.

Ratings:

Foderingham 7.5/10 – His kicking was poor at times and he took too long to do stuff but made a decent flip over save from the header first half and then made a great double save after the half time break. Little chance on the goal as badly exposed and then saw one flash onto his near post. Left quite badly exposed at times again as we went gung ho. Also, some poor back passes put him under pressure.

Baldock 7/10 – Usual up and at em performance where he got down the wing but struggled to put many/any good crosses in. He did give them too much space when they crossed for the one that led to the penalty and then was left exposed as they had the two on one for the Pickering chance after the break. Not sure Anel is helping him or Bogle much in terms of coverage. Came off as he tired but looked delighted at full time with his Wembley t shirt on!

Lowe 5.5/10 – Once again one of our weaker players in general play but did some ok things too. He started ok with some decent bits of play and link but then also gave them too much space a few times. His shot was not the best but at least kept it down and into ‘an area’ even if it was going miles wide! After the break he did ok forward wise and set up McAtee for a half chance but then made a few errors and it was an awful pass that put them in for the second goal. Helped the ball on for McBurnie for the equaliser. I sense the other players do not trust him as often they don’t see to pass to him?

Robinson 5.5/10 – Seemed to carry on from the week with another subpar performance after a good run of games recently. The penalty was a bit unlucky but then I can see why they gave it – he then committed a few silly fouls and could have gone off. Needs to keep a calmer head. After the break again he dived in a bit and they got down the left between him and Lowe quite a bit – like the goal. I never felt the centre backs totally imposed themselves today.

Ahmedhodzic 6.5/10 – I thought he was quite erratic again today. He won some tackles and balls but also he switched off a bit and there were gaps which he needed to fill. Stepped out of defence a fair but been a while since he actually (Wrexham apart) got into good areas or created much when he did go forward. Seems to be quite mixed with some ok passes/control mixed with careless play. Other than Spurs, not sure he has been anywhere near the standard of earlier in the season.

Egan 6.5/10 – Thought he lost a lot of headers to Brereton Diaz and Gallagher today. They had 3 or 4 chances from the aerial route from direct crosses going in. He needs to impose himself more and ensure opponents do not have an easy win or header. I just felt the ball stuck too much at the top of the field.

Doyle 8/10 – Our best midfielder on the field. Not everything he did came off but never hid, got his foot in, used it well when he could and moved it around the field. Looked mobile and full of running. McAtee and Berge hid a fair bit so he kind of had to do the job of three, both attacking wise and particularly defensively. He actually looks better when Norwood does not play as has to impose himself more. Only knock is some poor set plays actually but then of course made up for it all with an absolutely fantastic winner from 25 yards. He had a tame shot before so to have the confidence to have another hit was great. Two winners in a week. Shame he cannot play in the semi-final.

McAtee 5.5/10 – Not his day at all. He had a good early chance but was weak finish, then had another good chance after half time but mis controlled it. This was a theme all game and of course he had a one on one which he had to score at 1-1 but another really poor finish straight at the keeper. His head dropped after this but he did get involved in a few attacks still, including the winner which he helped keep the ball. He did so some ok things but when in good areas did not deliver.

Berge 7/10 – Frustrating again as some quiet moments where he went backwards but then some good work where he drove, carried it on and looked really dangerous. He did come back a bit or take too long to do things but then he would get it, take it on the half turn and go at them. Did it more than he has for a while but even then little end product or moments which led to chances. He did show some desire a few times second half when he wrestled back the ball and got them running backwards and this buoyed the crowd. Need much more forceful play and running at them as teams are terrified and cannot stop him when he does it. Defensively largely hopeless as teams just get runners off him and he will not run back.

Ndiaye 8/10 – Whilst he did not have many chances or efforts or even create too much, his general play was superb. His control, ability to come out of tight areas, keep the ball and run at the opposition was a joy to watch. So many times you think he may have left it, but then he comes out of it and we are going at the opponents. His touch and ability to keep the ball is truly something else. Thought for control and overall ability, he looked miles better than anyone on the pitch. Only knock is he had to do a lot it well away from goal and of course had to drop even deeper after the change.

McBurnie 6.5/10 – Probably be a mark or so less outside of his goal. Had not been a good game as the ball did not stuck much and even though we had a few bits of link play, it seemed to get away from him or he fell over/got muscled out of it. Seemed to be stuck in quick sand a fair bit and looked leggy and I was surprised he did not go off but then of course he nearly did get subbed just before he scored. The goal he took well with a good twist and turn and then the clever finish which was meant even if not hit hard. He then started working harder and helped us over the line – good defensive header at the end and some flick ons to keep it high up the field. Knows he will play better but a big goal that changed the game.

Subs –

Sharp 5/10 – Baffled by the sub. He did not really do anything and barely touched the ball. One hold up and then got caught offside. Not sure what he offers anymore and even though we won, not sure this changes really helped us come back? Is that harsh when we won? Surely through Jebbison is the next man up and will get them having to defend deeper creating spaces for Ndiaye and Berge?

Bogle – Actually nearly scored a killer goal as Ndiaye played him in but took a bit long and his shot was blocked.

Basham – Came on right at the end and shooed one out for a corner a bit clumsily but we did clear it fortunately. Great to see him at Wembley for the Blades – his first visit which is amazing for him towards the end of his career!

Manager: Heckingbottom 8/10 – If we lost it would probably be about 4/10 but that’s how football is! We played a risky approach and were open even at 0-0 and 1-1 but it did make it entertaining. Not sure we had much of defensive structure or base but it meant we created stuff the other way! We were getting on top when they scored and the same in the second half. The second was awful but we had warnings before this. Even with the attacking style and going for it, still not sure we should have 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 when drawing a game and teams effectively being in on halfway? That seems almost suicidal to me? However to praise him the shackles were off the other way and he retained faith with the side and the changes he made in the week for the most part (not sure Jebbison was fully fit from what he said?). The Sharp change was odd but then maybe deserved praise for keeping McBurnie on (to be fair Jebbison was being readied!) who scored and then after this he kept us going forward to win the game. It was a good game and the team did go for it so perhaps we should praise this swashbuckling style after being critical of us being a bit safe. Maybe he thinks we can just outscore teams and today we did! Suppose the cup is a bit different too in that you can be a bit more care free?

Blackburn – When we hammered them earlier in the season, I thought they looked a poor side who would come tumbling down the league but they have remained right up there to be fair and the manager has done well. They lose a lot but win a lot and have a good style of play where they attack on the break and have some dangerous players. They defend naively of course but they also will not sit back and just defend either.

They deservedly beat us at Ewood Park in a game where we did not turn up, particularly in the second half. I thought home advantage and the fact we would not let our standards drop again so much may mean we might nick it today and it proved in the end, even if it was a close game and one Rovers will be gutted not to get a result having led twice and hitting the post at 1-2. United were looking the better side early on but then the penalty comes before they are pegged back with a bit of an unfortunate own goal. Still after the break, both teams have chances and it is quite open before they score a goal on the break again. They then hit the post and could put it away and looked ok as the game entered the final 10 but a sloppy goal to concede and then having made three more defensive subs, they struggled to get going and you sensed United were going to win it if anyone.

Opponent of the match - They have some good players who are quite mobile and won a lot of headers with the two big lads up top. Szmodics is lively and Hedges and Morton are neat and tidy too. Travis is a dirty so and so but has played well in both the last two games and thought he was good again too but gave McAtee the chance. Brereton Diaz was a threat, scored the first and involved in most of their good stuff – so him or Szmodics take this award.

Opponent Weak link – Gallagher won a few headers but is quite clumsy I felt but the defence was as wide open as ours. The two centre backs seemed the weak links. Carter and Hyam are big lads but Ndiaye turned them a fair bit and I thought we would always get through and chances and that proved.

Referee/Officials – Tim Robinson. He was ok for most of the game actually and tried to just not be involved for spells and did try and let it flow in a pulsating game but was a bit inconsistent too with some things (both ways) as he let them play on but then at times a bit picky. The penalty he has to give having being effectively told he has to! Hard to spot that in real time of course so even though I hate VAR – I can see why technically (hate typing that too) it would be given. A booking seems soft though? Carter was the only other one booked- on McBurnie for a trip. Ndiaye got a fair bit of hammer again but they spread it out. The rest of the game not sure he got too much obvious wrong did he? I actually thought he gave a bit more for us the longer the game went on – in terms of playing on for some possible fouls. He did get in the way a bit at times though.

Matchday/Crowd/Coverage – Disappointing not to fill the ground -the two sides were full but there were some fairly sizeable gaps down the sides of the Kop. Still, it was a great atmosphere and an end-to-end game would always get that of course. Really good encouragement for both sides. Rovers travelled with a big 6,000+ following and they were good and loud but went too early with the Que Sera (at 0-0 as well as when they led twice) and it bit them on the behind at the end of course! It was superb scenes at the end when we came back and won and scored the fantastic late winner. The singing at the end with Status Quo, Doris Day and then John Denver all played in quick succession was fantastic and not many had left the ground before the players departed as they went round all the ground to take the applause.

Good report Deadbat .

Agree with all of your marks, except McAtee's.
I understand the logic behind the low score, but he got on the ball regularly, carried it, looked after it and helped get us up the park.
We look a far more upwardly mobile team with him in there and he seems to be helping bring out the best in others around him.

The left side of our defence needs addressing. It's looked vulnerable for a number of games.
At LWB, Stevens isn't the answer and Osborn is injured.
If we are going to persist with a back 3 then the obvious answer would be bringing Ciaran Clark in at LCB, possibly with Jack Robinson moving wide.

However, in recent weeks I've actually liked the look of us when we've moved to a back 4 and brought an extra body into the middle of the park. It seems to give us more passing options and helps us gain a foothold in games.
Might be too risky at this stage of the season to try it, but I'd be intrigued...

Lastly, I've been Tommy Doyle's biggest critic this season and I have seen your opinion has tended to concur. However, in the Norwood role he looks a different player.
The shirt's his to lose now.

McAtee did some ok things with the ball and does give us another dimension but he completely fluffed his lines 3 times when in including a sitter.

Cheers Deadbat enjoying reading ur reports more and more.

Seemed to have shortened them ever so slight but still full of detail and opinion.

Keep up the good work 🔥

Whilst McAtee missed several juicy chances, hes still very important in building up play. Thought he still looked very dangerous despite the chances he missed. I think we need to remember he's still a young fibrant player who's learning his trade. Think of him as a trainee teacher who has lots of bright ideas and is full of potential but still can't quite handle the classroom.

McAtee deserves our respect and admiration and will grow to be a fine footballer if he continues to apply himself. And that is that!

McAtee did some ok things with the ball and does give us another dimension but he completely fluffed his lines 3 times when in including a sitter.

I thought Mcatee should be marked a bit higher too.

The thing is he gets into those good positions to score so often.... theres a hattrick waiting for him before the end of the season.. mark my words!

Althought slightly different players... when was the last time we saw Fleck 1 on 1 with the keeper 😂

I think you're being harsh. He deserves higher marks for making those runs to create the shooting opportunity.

"You miss 100% of the chances you don't create"

Great report and comments as ever Deadbat. I do think McAtee maybe deserves more credit - despite his missed chances. I've said elsewhere on here, I see him playing a Grealish-type role (without the cheating). We'll really miss McAtee and Doyle next season, but well done Blades getting them on loan this season.

Great report as usual. Agree totally on VAR. A complete "joykiller'. I feel you can't celebrate a goal until they've kicked off again. It ruined a brilliant day and result at Tottenham in the first premier season and I've hated it ever since.

I’m sure that Szmodics has scored loads against us in his career. I remember his scoring an almost identical goal to today’s (even at the same end) when he played for Colchester. Cheeky little monkey.

One note, we have 5 games before the Semi, then four remaining after it.

Boro will only have 2 left after we have played our Semi - really important we get a good return from these 5.

Good report…save that Blackburn didn’t have a 6,000+ following.

It may appear a minor detail, but they received 5,782 tickets. If we’re not careful, before you know it, the Piggy Jacks will be telling everyone that we sold only about 15,000 tickets for a quarter-final…

Don't worry, they're already there

As I said v Spurs, sometimes what comes next or what might happen or thinking about winning a cup etc is immaterial and you just have to enjoy the day and the fact you win a big game in a thriller at your ground
I’ve enjoyed 3 home cup games much more than anything I’ve seen in the league for months so you sum my thoughts up perfectly here.

Good report DB. Agree with most of the scores. It was the FA Cup. It was a free hit so the handbrake coming off wasn't too much of an issue for me. We do have to tighten up for the remaining league games though.

We had 61% of the ball, used it well and looked more fluid going forward than we have since the start of the season. I'll echo what others have said. I didn't feel like we would lose unlike more recent games because of how we set up. I've banged on for 2 seasons about how the flat midfield 3 especially at home should be consigned to the dustbin. It has its uses for certain games away from home but 3-4-2-1 enables the ball to be transferred quickly through the middle. The most pleasing aspect today was the number of times we looked to move the ball forward to the 2 number 10's. Doyle was the architect of this and mom imo.

The only criticism I have is we keep trying to score the perfect goal when putting your foot through the ball as it proved on 2 occasions is the better option. Apart from the 15 minutes after their second goal Blackburn were not on top and unfortunately we conceded a goal we are all too familiar with down the left hand side of our defence. It really is an area of concern for the run in. What has happened to Clark as an option is anyones guess. Not on the bench. Injured again? Who knows but he is turning out to be an expensive loan for very little return.

Winning breeds confidence so despite my reticence that a cup run would affect automatic promotion we have to build on this and take it into the Narwich match. Doyle has the shirt now in the middle its up to others to up their game to try and take it off him.

I really enjoy your reports Deadbst and the effort you go to writing them.

Thought your marking was out today though. No one was below a 6 today imo, and Berge 8, Ndiaye 8.5 and Doyle 9.

McAtee missed a couple of great chances but he didn't hide. Neither did Berge.

This is a great job you do Deadbat. I used to write (much shorter) match reports for my son’s youth team and got bored with it after about five matches. 🤣

I’m sure that Szmodics has scored loads against us in his career. I remember his scoring an almost identical goal to today’s (even at the same end) when he played for Colchester. Cheeky little monkey.

Smodzics has scored twice against us in his career. The other was a consolation in a 4-1 defeat when he played for Colchester.

As an aside, he's played against us 7 times and has lost 6 with the game at Ewood Park earlier this month his only success.

Good report as per and well done for predicting the 3 2 result on your last pod.
McBurnie's goal was a typical scuffed shot from him. I'm struggling to think of any other pro footballer who regularly struggles to get a clean contact with the ball. He's brilliant at defensively headers however.

Thanks again Deadbat always love your reports and honest scoring. We all have different views on different players. I agree with you about Billy as I couldnt see what he was going to give us by coming on especially when they had a few good chances aerially !
