The closure of BU couldn't have come at a worse time for us really, as we were sat in a hotel reception in Dublin trying to approve all the new registrations. I think we probably ended up just allowing everyone in before pissing off to the Guinness storehouse, figuring we'd sort it all out when we got back.

Foxy and I "met" on VP/BU after we both referred to ourselves as "Norton Blade". Funny old world innit?

You werent the only one to find a "love match" through VP/BU. Rob and Boozy Bladette were the other BUVP couple to find love! Think they got married

The odds were pretty good for single females on there then by the looks of it :D can't have been many of us.

Ah, the history of United and the fans on the internet. Happy days.
I too have been around since the early days. first joining the Blades List listserv that was actually run from Sheffield Uni, not Hallam as has been stated, by an Admin there called Dave. It's still going, though is not exactly busy since the rise of message boards.
Then most of the various message boards, under various names, and never been banned either Darren. Though mainly because I don't post that often any more.

Slightly interesting fact is that BIFA actually had a web site before SUFC (and most other clubs), though not a message board, but it was considered. Just would have taken too much admin. The web site was run from Hallam Uni with issues of TRAWW etc. on it but it was finally removed during the Hinchcliffe trail because his lawyers had trolled the internet for negative comments and found him mentioned on the BIFA pages in not glowing references so the SHU web admin asked for the pages to be removed. Not a conversation I remember with much fondness really, seeing as how he was one of my bosses ;-)
I actually got a phone call from a well known United official asking if was interested in starting the United web pages during this period, but declined. Didn't quite see how doing that and BIFA at the same time would work and knew I wouldn't have the time to do the SUFC site anyway.

I got to know Step a bit during the BIFA / SUISA VP days and he had a difficult job which he did voluntarily so I'd never criticise him for being too officious. I have some idea about the time and dedication needed to run things such as this so have total respect for anyone who does it.
Not sure exactly of the timings, but I think whilst doing the admin of the boards he formed his own company called Windmill and then started doing the SUFC web site, so presume he had a conflict of interest which is why they were probably closed.
Just very happy to see this site continuing to do what it does so well.

I got banned from BU three times... and permanently for giving HB the details of an old login of mine.

Foxy had to log in with my details for a year or so too. Wonder if he can remember what terrible indiscretion earnt him that ban?

I was always Bladesman on Unitedite.

I read BU and never registered on BM but sometimes read it.

I think I registered on Barrel Of Money too.

I was Copes on BU / VP / SUISA. I wish the full cache from those old forums still existed, they were often hilarious. But they were all deleted when we lost the forums. ARSE!

Bert started last century on the board prior to BU, run by Planet or somebody. Bert's memory can't recall much about it though.
Bert was banned at least 3 times from BU, once the day after D'Jaffo scored at Hillsborough. A Wednesdayite came on the board and Bert game him both barrels late one night.

Great reading this thread. I was always Grayblade on the various boards from the early days of BU and SUIFA Viewpoints.

Around the turn of the century I started using the BBC Radio Sheffield board regularly but it closed late season with little notice leaving our prediction league in the lurch so I decided to set up our own board initially just to see out the prediction league. I initially set up a new board using the MSN format which got us to the end of the season but was pretty hopeless so I migrated to Proboards and set up South Yorkshire Football Forum.

I was admin on there up till 2012 helped by four Mods and made so good friends from all the local clubs, but I was busy working as well and after 5 years I'd had enough and pulled the plug. I did set up another board called South Yorkshire Footie for one of the Mods to run and that's still up and running if a little quiet and there's some great lads on there.

For a sensible chat, Blades Reunited is a nice place to visit but there's not much action away from match day. Some of the old BU lads on there though like on here. In fairness there are some great guys on the much meligned BladesMad in the main and the Mods are good, it's the sprinkling of 24/7 attention seeking toss-pots with no great love for our club that sometimes give it a bad name. ;) The FootyMad network though is useless, advert heavy and seems to be in its last throws.

BU once ran a poll for player of the year. There was a list of the main contenders plus the option to vote for one who wasn't on the list.
Bert was up the 5th place at one point, just above Paul Devlin...until Webperson put a stop to it.

I joined viewpoints around 1998 I think ,Step was a good bloke away from the Forum its a bit cheap to slag the guy off when he was doing the job for no rewards in his own time when many were pushing the limits as they are admitting to on here.
I have always been Sitwell though some often spelt it wrong on VP with a stray h :)

Interesting reading all this and recalling names from the past.

I'm sure I took Grumpy around Kendal leaving, Christ knows what I'd call myself now?

Talking about people finding love on BU, Big Mart ended up marrying Dkeown and moving to America

Is this a joke or not? What happened to DKeown - does she still follow The Blades?

I think it is worth mentioning that Saneblade and his wife HuddersfieldBlade created BrU to keep the fans together in a similar simple/concise theme that made BU popular. They pay for it too, my lasting memory of BU will be them being my landlords during my 1st year of Uni!

I never had a problem with him until the day he closed the forum. It was handled in such a shocking way any impression I had of him was negatively impacted. A lot of friendships were created on that site and suddenly we had no way of chatting to our mates without the forum. If he'd told us a week before that he was going to close it we could have figured out a plan, looked for alternates - spoken to Admins of said alternates to explain they might be a mass influx while they're in a pub in Scotland. Any way other than flicking the switch and closing the door behind him would have been better.

And don't forget Bert's banner:

'Get some work done you wasters'

Copes, if I recall, didn't you once come over from Denmark, play for the VP football team in the morning and then leave for Denmark before the United game in the afternoon? It seemed a long way to come for a kickaround, although these days, leaving without seeing the red and white wizards has a lot to be said for it.

Bert never saw it although he paid for it. The banner was only visible until 5pm, Bert was always grafting during working hours.

I remember there was another American Lady (BHA Blade, I think) that joined Viewpoints and someone posted saying that we there are Bored American Housewives joining the forum!

We did Silent, in 2009. We now have a toddler and football has taken a backseat over the past few years!

I remember you had several run ins with Trader Blade on SUISA? I'm sure she/he coined the Shitwell name ;-)
