Anyone else think we could revert to a similar formation to our promotion season at times now we have better players now they're used to the PL. Looking at our squad depth with the rumoured/confirmed signings make us look a lot more flexible formation wise.

Wouldn't be too surprised to see us line up like this against some of the lesser teams and then reverting to a more flat 3 in midfield against the bigger sides where we're expected to have less possession.

As for squad Depth, I think we're pretty well looked after looking at this

Of course we then have some other players that have been involved in pre-season that would probably hope to break in that could play a number of different roles as cover, such as Slater/Kean Bryan/Rodwell/Osborn and potentially Hackford, though its probably too soon for him at only 16 years old.

Weakest area of our team right now is definitely in attack but I expect us to improve that before Oct 5th.

In the past it's always seemed, the more choice we have the less settled the team, hope it works out this time ......

Berge in the AM position and Lunny LCM? er, what?

If anybody plays further forward currently, it's Fleck or Lundstram:

If we really did revert back to the "Duffy role". Surely the only shoe-in would be McGoldrick:

It’s lucky Chris Wilder is our gaffer !😉.

Some of yous would get your P45 off the dog n duck 😀.

UTB

I think we'll start to see a 4-3-3 / 3-4-3 formation creeping in soon. All the top clubs play 3 upfront.

If you want to join them at the top table...

I don’t think many play 3 up front at all.
Most are flexible as we are and can have 3 attacking but unless you have outstanding quality in the remaining 7 outfield players you will be overrun with 3 up front

You can't watch much football then?!

Arsenal:
Pepe/Saka - Lacazette - Aubameyang

Chelsea:
Pulisic - Giroud - Mount/Willian

Liverpool:
Mane - Firmino - Salah

Man City:
Sterling - Jesus/Aguero - Foden/Mahrez

Man Utd:
Rashford - Martial - Greenwood

Leicester:
Perez - Vardy - Barnes

Wolves:
Jota - Jiminez - Neto/Traore

Tottenham:
Don't play it all the time. Tend to have Kane alone. But have been known to go:
Son - Kane - Lucas

I do.
There are only 8 mentioned there and Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal do not have 3 up front, but have attacking midfield players .
I agree the very top ones do but they have better quality elsewhere.
You may be proved right once we get past October

"Only 8"? They're the top 8 clubs in the country.

Of course formations are interchangeable. When we are in possession it's 3-5-2, out of possession it's 5-3-2.

If you say Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal don't play with 3 attackers, then you're saying they play 1 upfront when clearly they do not... 1 central striker yes, but 3 forwards in total.

Always mystifies me when people suggest Berge as a CAM, or even a right-sided attacking mid.

He's a CM/CDM just like Ampadu. Here's my ideal line-up including rumoured possible signings.

Who thought 6 years ago we would be having these sort of discussions with formations 🤣🤣🤣

To me it is extremely unlikely now that we will play this formation now that freeman has left.

However if we were to, i’d imagine we would set out like this, Lundstram could be interesting in the CAM role imo had brilliant attacking intent and skill last season, Didzy would be more of a deep lying forward rather than the Duffy role but also think he could play CAM

I’m fairly certain Berge will be playing the central role this year. No idea why he hasn’t done it much already.

Norwood is an excellent footballer but you don’t spend £20m to play someone out of position.

Besides, Norwood would fit RCM better anyway and can surely swing more crosses in from there.

Berge will be RCM 100%, norwood isn't mobile enough to play that role.

You could be right, but it does beg the question why we spent so much on someone so young just to play him in role he doesn’t fit.

Berge is less mobile than Norwood in my view.
I suppose we will see come season end, i expect Berge to win our player of the season.

1–6–3
The 1–6–3 formation was first used by Japan at the behest of General Yoshijirō Umezu in 1936. Famously, Japan defeated the heavily favoured Swedish team 3–2 at the 1936 Olympics with the unorthodox 1–6–3 formation, before going down 0–8 to Italy. The formation was dubbed the "kamikaze" formation sometime in the 1960s when former United States national team player Walter Bahr used it for a limited number of games as coach of the Philadelphia Spartans to garner greater media and fan attention for the struggling franchise.

Chris Wilder had succesfully evolved the 1-6-3 "Kamikaze" into the 1-9 formation winning two promotions in three seasons and challenging for European places in the fourth season the formation was deployed. In the 2021 season it is rumoured that Chris Wilder has further evolved the system in an attempt to win the Premier League Title with the "Give your 'ed a wobble" all out 0-11 formation where even the goalkeeper depending on the phase of play can overlap down the wings or burst through the middle into the oppositions box whilst screaming "Dont push me!"
