Aha... it's "excerpts" from "The Entertainer" - theme tune to the Redford/Newman film "The Sting"... (Scott Joplin)!!!
<pedant> Marvin Hamlisch.

I wouldn't worry too much are Collins, surely we're looking to replace him before Tuesday.

I hate that tune. It's all you used to hear when Man U were on Sky. Which was always.
What have Man United used this tune for? Thought it was Liverpool about their "best midfield in the world".

They've sung it for decades and probably changed the words to suit current players or abuse of other teams.

Double pedant. The Entertainer was indeed written by the king of ragtime Scott Joplin. The rest of the score for the film was Hamlisch.
....based and influenced by Joplin.
But even The Entertainer was Hamlisch version/adaptation of Joplin's original in the film.
The tune is the same so you're still right but everything in The Sting is Hamlisch adaptations.

At the risk of sounding a complete fucktard can someone tell me how to say Diego's surname!?

All supporters do it. It makes for a pretty stale reportoire if you don't. Perhaps that's why we have such a funereal atmosphere at home games, tediously churning out the same old stuff?
Only have a problem when we start taking Piggy songs or slogans like We're all Blades aren't we. Fuck off with that shit, that's the kind of crap they do. Hate it when we follow suit.

Good as Marvin was, he couldn't claim credit for the version a la Blades. :)

I don't like Diegos inclusion though, although I like the flight of geese line someone mentioned.
Ah fuck it, best left to the kids they'll be the ones singing it.

They've sung it for years....

Follow follow follow,
United are off to *whichever European city they're playing in next*
There'll be thousands of reds
Pissed off their heads
Cos United are off to *whichever European city*

I am going to struggle with this...........I cant say Diego's name when I am sober.......After a couple of gallon it will be nigh on impossible !!! Sod it....I can get on board with the follow follow follow bit then leave the tough pronunciation to the young un's !!!! UTB - FTO !!!!
It's actually easier to sing it than say it!

Follow, Follow, Follow
Sheffield United is the team t'follow
We used to be shite
But now we're alright.
Follow, Follow, F..........

HH

recorded by the composer hissen;

The great Mr. Joplin plays it with a different rhythm to any subsequent interpretation that I am aware of - I think that is odd.

In common with a lot of early recordings there is a great deal less 'schmaltz' in the performance than you tend to hear these days.

(apparently this is a piano roll recording, not a gramophone recording btw)

I've got to say, I'm blessed if I can make any of the Sheffieldised lyrics written above scan particularly closely.
