I had it in my mind that we are doing much better this year than in the same games last year, so ran a quick check:-

Millwall A won 3-2; lost 3-1
Preston H won 3-2, lost 1-0
Birmingham H drew 0-0, drew 1-1
Bristol City A lost 1-0, won 3-2
Villa H won 4-1, lost 1-0
Bolton A won 3-0, won 1-0
Norwich H won 2-1, lost 1-0
QPR A won 2-1, lost 1-0
Middlesbrough A lost 3-0, lost 1-0
Swansea H lost 2-1, didn’t play them

Ignoring Swansea, because we didn’t play them, we’ve got 19 points from 9 games compared with 7 points in the same 9 games last season and we’ve only got a worse result in one game, Bristol City. Long may it continue!!

We got 4 out of 18 points from playing against the teams that went up. Swansea, Stoke and West Brom take their places in this division so last season was 4/18 and this season so far is 0/3.

We got 15 out of 18 points from playing against the teams that went down. Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham take their places in this division so last season was 15/18 and this season so far is 0/0

Seriously though the difference is the squad has more strength in depth. Better quality to come off the bench and more importantly nobody whos a 'regular' can ease off performance wise. Hence Billy, Duffy, Edna etc are literally playing at a higher level to keep their places.

Everybody wants to be a part of a successful side who play decent football. Who wants to train all week passing the ball around, perfecting your ball skills to out on a Saturday and start launching it forrards.

Ok we' re still having our nightmare suicide spells during most games, but I'm sure that's being addressed in no uncertain terms behind closed doors.

Definitely a stronger squad is pushing the incumbents to play better in the midfield and attack. A little extra competition in defence would I feel help there too, if I’m not being too churlish.

The injury to Coutts obviously cost us last season massively (date I say !). I feel a loss of a key player this season would be catered for far better, due to the squad position, and is definitely reason to be optimistic.

A bit of context after two frustrating away defeats - we’re still 11 points better off than last year on a like-for-like basis and we’ve taken 7 out of 12 points from teams that we didn’t play last season.

Forest A lost 1-0; lost 2-1
Wigan H won 4-2; didn’t play
Stoke H drew 1-1; didn’t play
Derby A lost 2-1; drew 1-1
Hull H won 1-0; win 4-1
Blackburn A won 2-0; didn’t play
Millwall A won 3-2; lost 3-1
Preston H won 3-2, lost 1-0
Birmingham H drew 0-0, drew 1-1
Bristol City A lost 1-0, won 3-2
Villa H won 4-1, lost 1-0
Bolton A won 3-0, won 1-0
Norwich H won 2-1, lost 1-0
QPR A won 2-1, lost 1-0
Middlesbrough A lost 3-0, lost 1-0
Swansea H lost 2-1, didn’t play them

We've definitely improved ,not enough for some people like but I think if all the stars align we could finish in the play offs which in the context of where we are as a club is phenomenal

Even Warnock taking Cardiff up last season was done with a bigger budget and much higher wages than we are paying now

I know what you mean but I dont think it matters how we compare to some teams last season - its what we do THIS season and obviously most teams have got different players to last season as we do
