I doubt we'll have compensated him. Look at it the other way, we could have told him he could stop and play in the reserves.

Least this way he's a free agent and it will be easier to find another club.

Released? Does that mean we not only don't get a fee for him, but we also had to compensate him for terminating his contract early?

Erm, I would imagine so. Without knowing the ins and outs of it, that looks like the case to me. Not ideal, but we needed shut of him.

We will have agreed to pay him a percentage of his outstanding contract. FB will have agreed this because he will think he will be up on the deal as he will get another club and get paid his wages with them plus the money her gets from United.

I can only assume no-one was interested in paying a fee for him that FB would sign for (presumably because the only clubs interested - if any - paid much lower wages). Hence the cheapest way to get rid was to pay him off.

How ironic that David Weir's marquee signing in Febien Brandy ended up mirroring his time at the Lane:
- Arrived to fanfare and hope from the fans
- Performed well in the first game
- Flattered to deceive for the rest of his time in a Blades shirt
- Ended up getting paid to leave (and leaving under a cloud)

Febien Brandy: 15 appearances, 0 goals, 0 assists, 2 red cards (7 games suspension). Good riddance.

He did assist Marlon Kings goal to be fair...

Absolutely Daz. Not knocking the decision not to pursue a fee. Just needed him off the books sharpish.

He also wins the award for the worst miss I've ever seen in a football game.

Whatever the cost, it's a wage off the budget subject to FFP Rules.

If Walsall don't sign him as a free agent, it will speak volumes.

Brandy has been out of contract and without a club in the recent past.

Skills alone do not make a footballer. Getting sent off twice in 15 appearances is some sort of record for a winger.

I'm guessing Brandy must have been on a good wage, he 'supposedly' chose us over a few championship/league one teams. Maybe if McCabe knew we potentially had the Prince arriving he stretched the budget to sign him. It's a strange choice to release rather than sell, even if we was to sell him cheaply at least its some kind of income.

Hopefully this is us freeing up our wage budget for the potential arrival of one man and a beard.

United will have paid him the difference between his current contract and the one he is going to sign at Walsall.

It's only strange if we think there is the remotest possibility of anyone actually shelling out for the bloke.

He's been an abject failure, Clough doesn't want him around and, realistically, no-one wants to risk cash on him. Not a bloke to have around sullying the pre-season atmosphere in my view.

I was one of the posters on here this time last season who, based on his terrific performance against us at the Bescot the previous season, thought Brandy would be a match winning asset for us who would be capable of ripping opposition defences to bits, so becoming a Blades legend in the process.

My taxi has just arrived. Bye for now.

Oh no, say it ain't so . . . . .

I agree with the above quotes and think its great business to get rid, his attitude and goal and assist return compared to the downside of his red cards means he was an abject failure, we have a great squad now and but for a right back and at least one striker we are far better than last season.

United will have paid him the difference between his current contract and the one he is going to sign at Walsall.

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. I think it generally depends on what is negotiated between the club and Brandy (and his agent) as a percentage of the remaining contract which will vary depending on how keen we are to get rid of him and how keen he is to leave (based on Dave Kitson's autobiography anyway).

Just me who thinks that he still actually had something to offer?

Obviously his stats don't make for great reading (15 games 0 goals 1 assist and 2 red cards), but you have to take into account that all but two of his games were under the leadership of the worst manager in our history and came in a period of time when which every single player (including Maguire) was completely abject. As is the case with the likes of Taylor and Cuvelier I think people judging players who played the bulk of their football under Weir as not good enough are being a bit harsh.

TBH I also don't really see the attitude problem he supposedly has. A bit of a short fuse? without a doubt. But an attitude problem? not for me. He lacked an end product but if anything he worked harder than anyone else did under Weir. He didn't complain when he didn't get back into the side after his suspension and from the little bits we heard seemed sorry about what he did. For me someone like Westlake is an example of a player with an 'attitude problem', tweeting things like "hahahahaha they've lost again" (or something on those lines) after he was sent out on loan and we lost a game.

I still think he could have proven to be a useful squad player with his pace and willingness to run at defenders. He's the sort we were crying out for at times last year when we were struggling to break down tiring defences. Jamal Campell Ryce isn't a bad choice to replace him though, mind. Similar player but with a lot more experience and less likely to kick off if things aren't going his way in a game.

Well said, Brandy's shown before that he's decent at this level, and dismissing him on the basis of his form under Weir would also mean Flynn and Murphy (and the rest of the side, really) should have been dismissed. From a purely outsider's point of view, he wasn't given much of a chance since the managerial change and it may be argued that he's been harshly treated. Clough bringing in an older player with many of the same qualities suggests that there are two things that have made us release him

  • his wage, some probably had to go to allow us to bring in other players, both last season and next.
  • his character, as shown in his application in training, willingness to follow (or ability to understand) tactical instructions, etc

Shame it didn't work out with him, but I've always liked JCR, so hopefully he'll be able to give us more competition in the wide areas.

I thought when we got this guy he would be a tremendous buy , quick and a asset for any team looking to get forward quickly ,
with his speed and turn of pace , fast forward less than half a season , and what did we get , a sulky fucker constantly chucking himself to the ground hoping for a free , 2 sending offs , a Billy big bolloxs attitude that goes down like a lead ballon with our new manager ,
No goals , and bottling it going forward when I saw him , and when he came on as a sub ( when he got back from the Shrews ban ) came the smattering of boo ' s , and no , not from me either .
Good riddance to bad rubbish , maybe we we're too big a step up for him ,
our gain will be there loss .
UTB .

Clearly talented. Clearly not smart enough to make the most of this talent. And almost certainly has the dressing room presence of Wards beer flatulence.

That said, if you'd given me a choice of Murphy or Brandy back in August it would have been a very different story.
