Had a couple mates who supported West Ham and arsenal so went on away end a few times with them while at school! Also went on Man U end once, I can't remember why I went to that.
As I'm an S6 blade, most my mates were pigs and I went and stood on the kop v Arsenal 88! I'm sure arsenal scored last minute equaliser which I loved, and was very giddy on the inside, however this was tinged with sadness as the result from Huddersfield meant we were relegated!

was quite normal to go and watch both mid sixties , the hatred hadnt set in then
as school kids we used to get freebie tickets and you went with mates,
remember often catching the circular at manor top that went through darnall, brightside to and to the ground
saw some of wednesdays classic games , the 5-4 win over man utd a 7-0 romp over burnley a night european game against frankfurt, but was never once tempted to say Id follow the dark side.
Travelling away was less of an option in the early sixties for under 16 year olds so going to watch both was a viable option .It wasnt seen as a heinous crime to go and the first derby games I remember mingling on their kop as there was no segregation at all, when Birchenall scored both in a 2-0 win was able to tell owls around me how inferior they were on that occasion , in a really civilised manner.

Then it all changed with hooliganism , and I didnt go for about 4 years , just remember going to watch them last game v southend hoping to watch them drop into division 4 , but was disappointed

Went loads of times in the 1960s, also went loads to Leeds, Huddersfield, Rotherham. Like you say it wasn't as completely tribal as it is today. Always supported the opposition, last game at S6 was Shrewsbury, must have been around 1982 when they were in the third or second tier. Used to love it when you could just pay at the gate. Went all over the country watching matches as a neutral eg loads of London derbies. Watched Ipswich early 1970s when I was stationed there in RAF. Don't know how I found time to watch United

I went years ago to watch Sheffield Eagles play St. Helens (I think). I just remember looking around in something of a shock at how dark and miserable it was. It was a dump way back then. I haven't been since and probably never will.

When I was young and it was affordable I'd sometimes go on the away end , this was when you could just get a ticket , supported a few teams for 90 mins Against the filth and adopted any number of accents .
Been a Newcastle fan and saw waddle make his debut I think in black n white stripes , spurs , wolves etc . Being a Chelsea fan in the 4-4 was a good night
Only fans I couldn't get on with was QPR , wanted both teams to lose
Also went to the league cup final replay between villa and Everton , went wanting Everton to win but stood on the kop with villa and was converted to be a 90 minute villain . Game ended 1-1 and went to another reply . Still have a soft spot for villa and that must have been 40 yrs ago
Life was simpler then , yes I supported whoever the pigs were playing but the whole thing was less tribal and wouldn't and couldn't do it now.

Only time I've been when not watching the Blades there was the Hillsborough disaster, stood on their kop watching that horrific event unfold, sad sad day.

My memorable Wendy matches at S6 not involving the Blades

2-2 v Ipswich in Jan 1970. My first Wendy match (I went to see Spain v Switzerland 1966 World Cup match but I have no memory of being there)

0-1 v Everton in April 1970. Everton were already champions. Johnny Morrissey scored the winner. I remember the electronic scoreboard saying "Owls 0 Champions 1"

I remember seeing L**ds beating Newcastle 5-1 in Sept 1971 as L**ds were ordered to play their two or three games at different grounds as a punishment for the fracas in that WBA game

0-2 v Santos in February 1972

1-0 v Bolton in April 1974. Ken Knighton scored to save Wendy from relegation although I missed the goal due to my Wendy supporting uncle wanting to leave early thinking that they werent going to win

1-1 v Arsenal in that FA Cup match in 1979. When players were coming on the pitch to start the 2nd half, the Kop threw snowballs at Pat Jennings who was catching them. Jack Charlton went berserk walking towards the Kop to tell them to stop but even more snowballs were thrown at him. The shock on Jack's face was priceless!

0-5 v Norwich in December 2002. Enjoyed that with my old schoolmate who is a Norwich fan

I've always thought of pigs fans as a humourless, up their own arse, set of c**ts but that did actually make me laugh!

start from 5 mins 20 secs

Was easier when you could just "pay on the gate" and the crowds weren't segregated. Went to many of the "Local" games in 60's and 70's. Saltergate - remember going to watch Chessie v Skelmersdale in FA Cup round 1. Barnsley v Bradford Park Avenue for some reason. Went to Millmoor a few times - when they had Tommy Doc as manager. Saw pigs lose to Man City in 69, saw the pigs beat 5-4 v Manure, was living in London beginning of 68-69 season - amongst the capital games was QPR's first ever win in the top flight - against the piggies. (remember seeing us v Fulham and Palace, watch Chelsea beat Derby in League Cup, and Spurs v Liverpool - Greavsie got a brace in a 2-1 win! amongst other games)

As has been said above, it used to be quite common in the 60s and very early 70s. I used to go with all my Wednesdayite schoolmates. Three things stuck out at the time.

1. The atmosphere. It never felt like a real football ground. The roofless kop could never match the bear pit intensity of the Lane.

2. Tommy Craig. Really?

3. Maybe it was just my schoolmates but there was absolutely no sense of objective judgement whatsoever. Every time I saw them get mullered it'd be bad luck or the referee or fuck knows what other excuse and every time they won it'd be no less than they deserved.

They never returned the favour and came to the Lane. I just got new schoolmates. Never felt the need to continue going to that shit heap afterwards.

Played 5 a side in the 80 s in the gym underneath the big stand ( don't know it's name). Or pleasant and stank of sweat, probably pig sweat I guess.

Only watching the Disaster documentary did I learn it hadn't been used as a temporary mortuary... bit sobering that really!

Went with my relatives from Boro 2 seasons ago (they paid). That upper tier at Murder Inc is a fucking disgrace. Couldn't see the game for the rusty girders, and to make matters worse, the Pigs won 2-0!

I went quite a few times when I was younger as my grandad was a copper and a pig fan (ironically) and he used to take me to the Niagara for pork sarnies before the game. Third match I ever saw was 0-0 draw with Carlisle end of 79/80 season when they were promoted and it was dull. If anything that experience confirmed to me that I was a Blade as I couldn't have cared less whether they won or lost. Saw a few in the early 80's, I quite liked their midfield pairing of Gary Shelton and Andy Blair but I've not been there again since about 1986.

I had the chance to see us play them in 1992 for free when we won 3-1 and didn't go because I felt I would jinx us, I didn't go so I was right!

Santos game in 72 for me aswell...I remember it was a school day..think i just walked out of school and told my Dad they let me...went on the Kop still in school uniform if I remember right...Don't think Pele played the whole game...A player called Edu sticks out in my mind for some reason, along with wanting Santos to hammer them...Other than that,i've only set foot in there to see United.
My dad took me and my brother, something's were always more important to him than school. Some Blades players there, Hockey with his leg in a pot, got a few autographs.

I was at two of those games , v Everton 1970, Everton had already won the league, they beat Wendy 0-1. Arsenal FA Cup 1979, when all,the snowballs were flying. I believe that tie went to 4 games.

I never realised that Leeds played one of their games at S6 when they were banned from Elland Road. I went to one of their other matches which was at Leeds Road v Wolves. This followed a pitch invasion the previous season at Elland Rd against West Brom when the ref got an easy offside decision wildly wrong

Colin Suggett (in an offside position) wasnt interferring with play which would be the correct decision nowadays. In 1971 it was the ref's discretion

I went about 10 times between 1988 and 1995. Mainly to see United, but saw 5 games not involving us. I stopped going completely after my 10th visit when I realised that I'd never seen the Pigs lose at Hillsborough. I've never been back.

One of the games was a friendly against Brondby, which I think took place the day before we played Man Utd in the Cup in 1990. Peter Schmeichel was in goal for Brondby.

I also saw them play the odd away game (Newcastle, Bolton, Cambridge) in the 90s when I happened to be in the town in question and Wednesday supporting mates were going too.

Like other posters in this thread I used to see quite a lot of games as a "neutral", mainly in the 1990s, when you could pay on the day and sit where you liked. Usually went with a mate who supported one of the teams. Went to Spurs, Rotherham, Coventry, Blackpool, Forest, Brentford, Cambridge and Leyton Orient games like that. Watching as a neutral has died out a bit now you have stricter segregation and it's harder to pay on the day. It's a shame.

I went with a mate v Man Utd 1974, (He was a Man U fan from Donny) and had a spare ticket for the North Stand

Well their kop was almost 100% Man Utd fans, the few Porkers were fighting for the lives in a corner by the South stand. Never seen a following as big. The game was 4-4 and I cheered every Man U goal

That was Boxing Day. Wednesday were winning 3-0 at one point.

Fun fact: Wednesday won 1-0 at Southampton 2 days later, 28 December. That was their last win of the season. They only scored five goals after Boxing Day and were relegated to division 3.

Happy times.

Either very late 60's or early 70's the unclean were playing Man Ure and we stood with the away fans, it was easy back in the day to just rock up at a ground & buy tickets and went to an FA Cup semi final in 1974 Newcastle v Burnley. Cant even remember how I acquired tickets for that though

Not sure if this would count, but went during the Japan/Korea World Cup in 02 to the corporate suite for a works jolly. Watched England v Argentina on a big screen while tucking into breakfast and getting pissed.

7th Dec. Man U scored first then Wendy were winning 3-1 (ex-Blade Bernard Shaw scoring the 3rd goal with a free kick)

Amusing as it was seeing the piggies being mugged on their own kop, that video also illustrates what utter cunts Man U fans were in those days.

I went three times in the late nineties a pal of mine at the time was an exiled Villa fan, Dwight Yorke and co tore the pigs a new one in a three nil hammering at the end of the season, a couple of months later they beat them one nil at the start of the following season. However the best of the lot was Villa's last minute winner towards the end of the pigs last season in the premiership. Remember Alan Thompson's header past fat boy pressman, who looked inconsolable in front of a massive 18000 crowd.

I saw Wendy at Leyton Orient 1980 (?). It was the day before the first ever London Marathon and me and my mate had gone down to watch the race.

Several times - Grandfather was a grunter ;)
and to see the Mega-Classic of a match that was Sheffield Club Vs Queens Park in about 1992ish - That was even emptier than when the pigs are grunting about summat! :D

Ian Bowyer you beauty. Wonderful celebrating with my Blade mates on their Kop at the end whilst they were crying their eyes out. Just looked it up, 44k there that night.

"only" 44k there? You missed a zero off that attendance surely...

Been numerous times when I was a kid, for school trips and footie presentations. Even went to watch England u19 or something there once. Never payed though
