English managers

The bottom six have English managers and the top eight do not.
Is it because only the big clubs can afford top managers and if so why are there no top English managers ?
When did an English manager last win the top division title ?

The top 8 have bigger budgets than the bottom 6 therefore have better players and better managers, simple. Nothing to do with nationality of a manager.

i was asking a question, I'm not necessarily saying an English manager I can think of would do better than the foreign ones.

i do think that generally they don't necessarily get the same opportunities.

Lampard and Gerrard are exceptions based on their playing careers alone.

It's a good question. The current crop of English managers were brought up in the 70/80/90s.

Wilder at 53 is at the younger end of this and played at a time when getting pissed and jumping in the garage fountain was part of the game. Perhaps they are catching up with the European coaching style that Pep and the Germans were brought up on

decided to have a look at the premier league to fully understand your post

the top 10 includes
Pep, Klopp, Mourinho, Ancelotti who have won the lot - makes sense as we are the richest league on earth
Tuchel is an up and coming manager, might be in place for 1 year or join the top table if he performs
Solskjaer is an anomaly as he was a short term appointment who's ended up being decent. In fairness 25 of his 31 seasons in football have been in English football.
Likewise Smith (the only Englishman), Rodgers and Moyes are outputs of the English game really at 3, 7 and 9
Artetta is a bit of a Tuchel but has been in England for 15 years of his career.

the bottom 10 has 7 Englishmen, of whom Sam and Roy have had a go at the top table and been sacked. If Southgate fails, it will be interesting to see what the short list to replace him looks like.

If it's an Englishman, Lampard or Gerrard are probably favorites but without any success in EPL.

Sam and Roy have already been there, leaving Dyche, Smith, Parker, Bruce and Wilder as the other EPL managers, for now
Things aren't much better in the championship - Woodgate is the highest ranked English manager in 7th, followed by Neil Warnock.

Conclusion - English football managers are pretty shit for reasons that I Don't really understand - perhaps a bit insular?
 
I was thinking about this the other day.

We're the biggest club in English football that has never had a foreign manager.

In the top two tiers in England how many clubs have never had a manager who wasn't from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland or Northern Ireland?

Off the top of my head I'd guess there's only us, Burnley, Bournemouth, Luton and Wycombe.
 



The European managers get the biggest and best jobs with the biggest budget. It’s no surprise.
 
I think the top 6 clubs irrespective of managers are there because they have 1bn quid squads first and foremost.

We had Danny Bergara for 2 games in 1988.

Not saying I disagree, and would be hard to pick a good British manager out now, but again if all the top clubs (the ones with the resources to throw around) give the roles to foreign managers then the gap, or perceived gap, only widens.

I largely agree with that but everytime a British manager does get an opportunity at one of the top clubs he turns out to be pants.

Hodgson at Liverpool, Moyes at Man Utd and Lampard at Chelsea are the first three that spring to mind.
 
The other thing is what do you think of the team when you see a British manager in charge?. Hard working, mostly UK based players, straight talking, club with not much ambition, 4-4-2, big lad at centre half.
When you se a club with a overseas manager what do we think, influx of big signings imminent, lots of cash to through about, “sexy” football, we’re on the up, different formations, lots of rotation of the squad and players who’s name doesn’t fit on the back of your shirt so you go for Fleck.
 
I think there’s definitely a discussion around how effective the FA is at encouraging people into coaching and then how clubs approach coaching development. There are clubs/organisations out there like the red bull group who produce and develop coaches in the same way they would players but English clubs prefer to buy in rather than grow their own.

How did English clubs get on in Europe in the 1970s and 80s (before the ban)?
 



Mind you, what do you expect with so many foreign players ?
you've got have somebody who understands what their saying....... :rolleyes:
