With Kyle Walker making his first start for England tonight it got me thinking about other ex-United youngsters. Who was the last product of our youth system to play for England?

Jags doesn't count as he started out with Everton.

There were two in the starting 11 tonight who have played for us since we went down from the Prem. Makes you marvel at how we ended up in the Third Division.

I kept flicking over to this bore-fest last night and it got me thinking.

Was the last time KW played at Wembley v. Burnley (incredibly two and a half years ago, and in front of a far bigger crowd)? While having this nice, warm feeling the commentator said 'Incredible to think that Walker made his debut just five years ago for Northampton at Sixfields in front of just 5000 people'

Did he say 'for' or 'against' and while mentioning the fact that he's now firmly established at Spurs after a successful loan spell at Aston Villa, why no mention of United?

Did think of him but wasn't sure if he was ever actually with us.

Davies was in one of the Junior Blades teams, I think, until he was 14 or 15.

If he doesn't fit your criteria either, the last United youth product to be capped by England prior to Walker is, I think, Mick Jones.

Chucking a pot load of cash at 70 loanees instead of investing in what could be the England back four.

I heard that bit and was sure we would at least get a mention, but it didn't happen. It was exactly three yeara, so Nov 2008, not five and he had gone on loan to Northampton, so his debut was for them. It was Andy Townsend who then went on to mentin his spell at Villa, then Spurs.

According to Wikipedia, young Kyle has played only 81 league games in total and only 26 of them have been in the Premier League with 15 for Villa and just 11 for Spurs, which makes his rise even more amazing.

He fits! :-)

I was also thinking during the game last night, who was the last United player to score for england? either whilst playing for us or someone who had moved on from us.

Jags hasnt scored for England yet has he??

UTB

Does Gary Cahill count?

Cahill (does he count?) did a couple of months ago. Other than that, it was probably TC !

Jags doesn't count as he started out with Everton.
Why not? He joined at 15, so the vast majority of his development was at United.
The question is, do we still have the same defensive coaches at the academy? They were obviously doing something right over the years. Cahill's time at United certainly helped him break back into the Bolton side. Jags could be one of the 'Senior' players soon. And good riddance to the self-obsessed players that look like they might have had their time.
