Doyle?

I think if he came in you could legitimately play two sitting midfielders in Souza and Doyle. Souza to do the spade work and Doyle to take the ball off him and try and dictate the play he has the vision and the passing range plus his defensive stats aren’t too shabby themselves. You could then give Hamer more of a free role in front of those two and allow him to hopefully find space and create although again he can do it all and would help defensively as well pressing from the front.

In losing Berge and Ndiaye we’ve lost our identity having a midfield working like outlined above could help to give us a new different identity.
agree with you yogi on all of that i think the souza/doyle pivot with hamer given a free duffy like role is what hecky is looking for of course that system would mean playing 2 strikers which we could get away with in home games but not in away games

We definitely need another number 10, and in honesty 2 strikers. Not just Archer.

Doyle and McAtee can’t be compared, play totally different roles in the team and could t play the others role as effectively if tried.

For what it’s worth I see us playing a flat and narrow three in midfield, with Souza in the middle covering when the other two break forwards when in possession.

Up front I reckon we look at what we did last season, and have one linking up and coming shorter for the ball as IN did. (Not sure Archer fits that or not tbh)
Much will depend on McB and his fitness, as I reckon he will play the target man even though I don’t think it suits him.

But we so desperately need some speed in midfield, not just across the ground but in thought. Need to get on the counter and get at teams so need to really improve there as I do t see our defence looking to play about with it like most of the prem sides seem to be these days

I think our best bet is to be aggressive and horrible to play against which will make us hard to beat, especially at home. Defensively sound as seen by signings of trusty, Souza and even hamer to an extent and then capitalise on set pieces. We’ve got some big players and also some good set piece takers such as hamer and hopefully Doyle if this comes off. We might not be the fastest but I’d argue we weren’t exactly the fastest that firsg premier league season with fleck, norwood and lundstram with mcburnie and sharp/mcgoldrick/mousset(for about 10 games). Mcburnie is definitely better now then he was and archer (hopefully) is probably better then any forward we had that season

I thought Doyle actually was creative last season when he got up the field. Maybe someone has stats to back that up - or refute it.

If he’s freed up to go forward by having Souza next to him, I reckon he could be really good for us.
Didn’t Doyle play further forward when he was at Cardiff? Anybody got any stats to prove it one way or the other? Asking for a friend 😄

It’s be surprising and concerning if his wages were too high. Yes he plays for Man City, but I doubt they’re paying him 30k a week plus, given he’s not really played a game for them and seems way down their pecking order.

Didn’t the Prince say wages wouldn’t be an issue?

imagine its relegation wage reductions that are proving a barrier rather than basic wage levels

Yea he did

Did he say that specifically about Doyle? I thought he said he would be happy to sanction 100k a week if Hecky thought it was for the right player.

Not sure he meant we can pay any wages to anybody.

If someone amazing came available then fair enough but I wouldn't want us paying 50k a week to Doyle.

Depends what the agent is asking maybe United think 30k/week, maybe his agent came back with we gotta start at 100k. Saw this sort of thing on TV once years ago (Peterborough United I think) the agent came out with something outrageous the manager straight off said, 'well we're too far apart I don't think we'll make a deal'.

Edit: Yes it was the manager was Barry Fry.

I suspect that is often the barrier we find ourselves in. And actually I can understand the club's stance on this I think it has to happen, but also if you are with the club in the champ automatic increase. (I believe this is the case also).

If I were Doyle though unsure of his other offers but I'd be wanting to take the opportunity to come here and give a go at PL level. I've not heard other PL clubs expressing much interest in him so likely Championship loan otherwise.
McAtee however different story, be surprised if he came to us to be honest even on a loan, expect other PL clubs to snap him up on loan.

I can't find anywhere that says he is on more than £7000pw

Can someone please show me his real wage, coz that can't be correct

I can't say that I was massively impressed by Doyle throughout his time with us. Instead, I thought he was a decent Championship player who grew steadily with us and at the end he was starting to help shape the game and be a top end champship player (though he did miss some games through injury as did all of the squad to be fair at some point) and he wasn't a regular until PH saw sense and put both him and McAtee back in the starting line up at Sunderland after the defeat to Luton with Norwood and Fleck involved.

Im hoping that this season we can get him and this can be his break out season with him stepping up to the PL levels but even if he initially struggles at the level, I can see him being a mainstay in our midfield for a long time and growing in influence and almost being captain material for us if he stayed with us. He would be a very good signing to future proof us more though he might still struggle at first with us in the PL. That's the market we are in though and it's a case of how quickly can any new signings come in and be comfortable in their PL surroundings. PH did say that we can't recruit the ready made PL level players so all will be a gamble to some extent. I hope we get him this week on a permanent deal as he's potentially PL standard but not too end PL so City probably won't be after him again in the future.
Said last season that if we could sign him (after we got promoted) that he could be out long term replacement/successor to Norwood.

As for him stepping up to premier league level, I reckon he could do it with the right players in midfield with him to do the things he's not so good at doing. I know we all give Brooks a fair bit of credit for his performance against Spurs but I thought Doyle ran the midfield that night.

Now I’m not calling anyone a liar but I find it hard to believe that Tommy Doyle has messaged a fan on Instagram and told him he’s having a medical and that the fee is £15m + 12% sell on clause
Would be more believable if he told that to Darren Smith rather than a random fan as Darren has the club connections, which with those details about the fee and sell on would be breaking the confidentiality part of the signing agreement.

it has to be the relegation salary clause but i think one way or another we need this lad to come in i also think hes a good attacking threat as well him and souza as the 2 is as good a combo that we can get for central midfield
