The Watney Cup 1st Round: Notts County 0-3 Sheffield United

Woodward and Currie twice :)

View attachment 12641

There was a MOTD camera stanchion on that open end. Blades fans appeared to be unscrewing it at the bottom and the cameraman spending more time looking out for his own safety than filming the game

Just broke up for school holidays. Alice Cooper 'Schools Out' being sung. Happy days.

Today July 30th 45 years ago today 1970.

A pre-season friendly at Vetch Field. Single sheet copy only.

United won 3-2 with a couple from Woody and a Gil Reece strike

Notice that Swansea were to host the Ghanians Hearts of Oak next. One suspects that was a bit of a culture shock

Whom is that Albert Reece? Don't recall him ever playing another game for United :-)

A first visit to the New York Staduim and a 1-0 win over Rotherham, with John Cofie scoring a screamer.7689753640_d09894cfa3_z.jpg 7689755798_729c2639bf_z.jpg
Not much of a programme cover, photographer had to use a wide lens to get Mr Evans on it.

There was a couple of teething problems, like only two turnstiles open, as the electronic system wasn't working and the new ground had a very spacious feel about it, so much so that some seats hadn't even been put in, despite having tickets for them..

As a 21 year old, I don't mind you putting up ones from way back, or even around the 2000 mark, because I won't have gone to them, but to do one from what seems 6 months, but is actually 3 years ago is pretty mean.

I still remember (in patches) the night in town following that game, with my cousin and a pal, it was the first night I spent at my rented house in Walkley. 3 fellas sharing a room after ales and curry, that smell I will never forget. Could still probably give a match report on the game, and remember Cressie doing the HT training with the subs.

:D Back in the 80s, I once went out with a girl who lived in a rented house at Walkley, with 7 students, well, not really went out, more I just went round. ;)
I remember getting up one morning and creeping along the landing and standing in a s**t. The night after, whilst they were hiding behind the sofa because the rent man was at the door, they told me it was the cat. All I can say, someone was hiding a f****** big Lion in that house. o_O

Spanish visitors to the Lane, a 1-1 draw with Seville.

Goalscorer: Withe

QUOTE]

I went to that, I would have been 8 but in my memory I was much younger for some reason! Wasn't this linked to a proposed transfer or Morris and Edwards to Seville? I seem to recall we beat them 3-1 in Spain a few months prior to this

Another nail biter as United sneak a 12-1 victory in Sweden.

Duffield (4), Deane (2), Williams (2), Downes (2), Webster, Joseph

Aug 4th, 17 years ago. 1998

A Home friendly, with two footballing heavyweights on the cover.

United lead 1-0 through Dean Saunders, before three Benfica goals in the last six minutes condemn United to defeat.

Was Steve Bruce photoshopped?

They'd just bought him from Donny, and given that many United fans thought the manager had lost the plot and didn't think he was good enough (Sound familiar?) they just used an old photo.
The photo was taken just after Bassett took over in January 1988 before he signed Wally Downes, Cliff Powell, Peter Hetherston and Tony Agana (Martin Kuhl is in the photo next to Bassett's left and very soon after he went to Watford in a swap deal with Agana and Hetherston). The photo would have been taken in end of January or beginning of February

Uh-oh....3rd Division Bristol Rovers beat United on penalties.

70p to watch a Cup Final. Disgraceful

Which United player was said to have scored with his first kick for the Blades in this game?

Keith Eddy. He came on as sub. I am not sure if he came on the field just before the end of extra time, if he did then I didnt notice the substitution.

Correct Silent.

Today's offering: August 6th, 10 years ago, 2005

Opening fixture of our last promotion season. A 4-1 tonking of Leicester City (Where are they now?). Gray and Kabba with penalties, Ilfil and Bromby

Certainly did go, all three days (school holidays of course), badly rain affected. Took home a large chunk of turf that got planted, and probably still resides, in Charnock.

Today 5 years ago August 8th 2010.

Opening day of the season. Away.

Sunday Lunchtime. On Sky, Blackie's red and white army taking on Cardiff. His Last league game in charge.

Not surprising as he puts Simmo, Ertl and Taylor in the same back four

Team: Simonsen, Ertl, Taylor, Lowton, Morgs, Monty, Quinn, Britton, Ward, Cresswell, Evans.

United lead halfway thro the 1st half via Ched, but Lowton is dismissed before half time. Bothroyd equalises and we draw 1-1.
