Ooops here's yesterday: sticking with 2004 and 11 years ago July 14th:

A young reserve side visited Bradford for a pre-season friendly and won 1-0. Kevan Hurst with the goal.

Team: Barnes, Gyaki, Horwood, Harper, Robertson, McFadzean, Gordan, Ross, Whelan, Shaw, Hurst
Subs: Ilic, Sharp, Speight, Haystead, Ashmore

Nice little programme, with an interesting page on lost football seasons this edition featured the 1898-9 Yorkshire League Season

I was trying to think of the midfielder in that era who showed so much promise. Ian Ross. Wonder whatever happened to him.

Was Warnock brought up in Frechville? Just like all those trips to bloody Cornwall it was another example of him using pre-season friendlies for his own personal ends. Little respect for what the team needed to prepare for the coming year. Let's face it 2003 / 2004 was hardly a classic season compared to the season before.

"Memries"...

I think the first football match I ever attended was Frecheville versus Farsley Celtic... some sort of cup game... I lived down the hill on Scowerdens estate - Wickfield Road... my mates and I managed to get in under the fences (rather than paying "tuppence" to get in, leaving our bikes outside (wouldn't do that these days)... so that will have been about 1968/69...i think... We maybe spent 20 minutes in the little terracing behind the goal before we got bored and went off back into the sun and down the hill to play proper football on the grass between our houses between Wickfield Road and Silkstone Road.

Didn't he go back home to Boston

Yes he was.:). Although, I'm not of the view you can take into account the standard of opposition for pre-season friendlies as a pre-cursor what will happen in the coming season.

I was probably going OTT there Sharrow but I maintain that not enough care was taken in choosing the corect opposition to test the players in respect of the coming season. Probably still happens today. Warnock ruled the roost and wasn't questioned enough by his employers.

I thought it amusing at the time that having taken the team to Cornwall or Devon for a few pre seasons and seen them start poorly, Warnock moaned constantly about being made to go to China in 2005, but then saw us win 10 of the first 11 games followed by promotion...

Baslow v Sheffield United, not the most inspiring cover I admit.

5618232173_d9a377ae01_z.jpg

It was edgy, it was nervy, it could have gone either way, but in the end United edged home, 14-1

Goals from: Jagielka, Own goal, Asaba, Onoura, Smith (3), George (2), Ten heuval (2), Ndlovu (2), Kozluk

Paddy Kenny played the 1st half after coming in on a 3 month loan deal. Jags gets on the scoresheet for both teams.

That's actually our record first team victory in any game....

And 31 years ago 1984 a programme from Bramall Lane:

Graham actually fought Lindell Holmes who was a last minute replacement,

Same as Bournemouth!

Bournemouth started wearing that badge just weeks after this programme came out. I was thinking maybe they'd sent some scouts along who'd seen the programme and thought "that'd work well as a badge!". However, they were in the old Third Division at the time so they'd have little chance of nabbing any of ours and there were still pretty heavy restrictions on signing non-Commonwealth players at the time I think. So what's the story (morning glory)?

14 years ago Today, 2001.

Bodmin Town 0-9 Sheffield United. Asaba, An Own Goal, Devlin (2), Jags (2), Suffo (2) and Monty

Here's the programme and advertising poster.

Here goes:

Today 8 years ago: 2007, and an early pre-season in the glorious 'Robbo's era'.

United's second match in Borneo against a Sarawak Select Side.

We win 3-1 with goals from Walker, Hartfield and Starbuck.

Manager Howard Kendell described Andy Walker's opener as Gerd Muller at his best, was he drunk......no ....don't answer that:oops:

Today 27 years ago 1988.

An 8-1 away win at Skegvegas, courtesy of goals from Deane, Williams (2), Agana (2), Fenwick (2) and an Own goal.

The programme cover was the same as the season before, but had a different content.

Still a great place to stand with a pint in the summer.
