Down memory Lane.....this day

The crowd were furious with Shilton's challenge. Geoff Salmons (joined Stoke the previous summer), thinking that Woody was to take the penalty, advised Shilton to dive to his left. To Salmons horror, it was Keith Eddy who took the penalty and Shilton went the wrong way unable to stop the penalty. Shilton was furious (probably because of Salmons poor advice) by repeatedly whacking the ball to his net in a stroppy way. The crowd in the BLUT gleefully laughed at Shilton's stroppiness and chanted "Shit-on, Shit-on"

If that's right, Salmons must have been on drugs as Eddy had taken our penalties all season :-)

Yes, I read about it in the "25 years ago" feature in Green Un in 2000. I found it strange because he saw Keith Eddy score a penalty in the 2-2 home draw against Spurs in Jan 1974

That corner by Woody , hit with real power and accuracy , can't remember the last time i saw one like that by us , our players have no clue or just aren't strong enough to deliver crosses like that , and Badgers cross was fab as well ☺

To be fair, when did you last see one like that by anybody?

That photograph of Flynn's goal against Cardiff...look at the packed terracing in the background. Standing in swaying, shifting, singing banks of fans made those days extra-special for me. In this of all weeks, we have to be aware of the dangers that came with them, dangers which weren't fully appreciated at the time, but to be a Unitedite at that time on nights like those watching a team like that shoulder to shoulder with fellow Blades was absolutely brilliant, even more so if you were thirteen years old.

Totally agree about the terraces SF,I think they've been a massive loss to Football, and for me with the correct safety measures they could still work today..what great times they were. It's a shame that they are seen to be unsafe, but as long as the correct safety measures were in place, and not overcrowded..and certainly without those stupid caged fences, they would be ok today for me.

Two to cast your eyes over today.

One involving United and one not, but for some of you maybe an opportunity to remember some local lads from the late 70s.

Firstly United: 27 years ago today 1989. April 29th

A 2-2 draw with Fulham, Agana and Bryson with the goals. Attendence a touch under 8,000.

I'm sure that Peter Duffield earned the distinction of being the first United sub ever, to be subbed.

Secondly, the programme from the 1979 Sheffield and District Sunday League Cup Final.

As the programme explains Hoyland Town Jags were awaiting the winners of Olive Grove/Earl United

A few names may ring a bell. Micky Fitzpatrick and Paddy Buckley to name a couple....

5th May 1990, who can forget this?

My greatest day as a Blade... so far.

Leicester City, at the long gone Filbert St, whatever happened to that club?

I agree with that dnb, it works OK in Germany. I've been to a couple of Dortmund games, they have to put seats in for European games but otherwise they have terracing behind the goals and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Sorry all, been slacking all week. Time to recap for May:

Rollercoaster time here goes:

May 1st: 1971

Iconic picture cover. A 3-0 result that saw United promoted to Division 1.

2nd May: 37 years ago 1979

Harry Haslam had said that United would stay up, Charlton's manager Andy Nelson said it would take a miracle to stay up, unless somebody did something very silly.

Step forward United, 10 man Blackburn already relegated inflict a calamitous 1-0 defeat which would lead to relegation. Terrible square shaped programme.

May 3rd 1980: 36 years ago. Another end of season rout as we are soundly beaten 4-0 in front of 20,000 at Blundell Park

5529017186_416ccaa07e_z.jpg

May 4th: 70 years ago 1946. Nice programme to have, will set you back about £200. Jimmy Hagan scores the only goal at Turf Moor. United would win the League.

May 5th 1990: 26 years ago, 1 what a day, could it get any better.

It started badly as a nervy United went 1-0 down to a Gary Mills goal. Paul Wood levelled, and then all hell broke lose in the United end as Deane finished off a goalmouth scramble. By half time the Blades led 4-2. United kept City at bay during the second and with news that Newcastle were losing to Middlesbrough, joy was relentless as Agana scored on the break to make it 5-2. The rip back up the M1 was eventful too.

Blades 1-2 Newcastle United.

This one was a real sickener against struggling Newcastle.

The kind of result that gets teams relegated

On a trivial note. Christian Nade scored United's 4000th League goal at Bramall Lane

Found out the score in a coffee shop in Minnesota. Taught the locals a few new words.

My Green Un for 1/5/71 is at my uncle's house. Roger Kirkpatrick in a strange pose! Bending down so that it is easier for him to watch the penalty and making sure the players don't encroach the penalty area when Woody was taking the penalty!

7th May: There's a couple of dates throughout the year that nothing has ever seemed to go right for the Blades.

This is one of them. Last season, we lost to Swindon in the 1st Leg of the play-off semi

But it gets worse, much worse. 22 years ago 1994

Chelsea 3-2 United. Still painful after all this time

And we're back......after yesterdays opening salvo of the Tufty era, we're going back to the summer of 2013. Three Years ago for the last of our three friendlies in Scotland under the new leadership of David Weir.

A 2-1 win with goals courtesy of the M&Ms (Murphy and McDonald).

Not everyone was convinced this was going to herald a bright new future as only days before at Cowdenbeath I was stopped by a local with a shocked look on his face and asked me 'Is this actually your first team?'.

26 years ago today......July 25th 1987

Chesterfield 1-1 Sheffield United (Pre Season friendly)

Richard Cadette and Andy Leaning make their first appearances for the club.

From The Star (Tony Pritchett)
United and Chesterfield drew 1-1 at Saltergate on saturday in a match that neither Billy McEwan nor Kevin Randell could have been particularly enjoyed. McEwan may have been satisfied up to half time. United looked comfortable and new signing Cadette laid on a fine goal for Dempsey (12 mins) while his new goalkeeper Leaning was one of the unemployed. But, Leaning was well beaten by Caldwell in the first attack after half time and from then on Chesterfield were transformed. United should have restored their authority but Morris missed, Kuhl hit the bar and Cadette failed with a straight forward header

Number 18 for Raith was 'trialist'. Couldn't they be bothered to find out his name?

I was there that night, stayed over in a travel lodge in Glenrothes. I've had a soft spot for Raith Rovers after the marvelous hospitality they showed towards the 100 or so travelling Blades. They even opened up the Directors Lounge for the Blades to have a drink in before the match.

11 years ago, July 12th 2005.

Parkgate v Sheffield United (Reserve Team Friendly).

United win 5-1 in their opening Reserve Team friendly over at Rawmarsh.

The Goals came from an own goal, Ian Ross, two for San Lee (who went onto play in the South Korean K-League) and Iranian winger Sharu Naraji, whose career was shortly to be ended by injury, followed by a long court case as he substantial compensation for dodgy medical procedures on his ACL.
