Ok, I've been a bit remiss this week, didn't post on the 13th, couldn't bring myself to mention the Wigan game.

Its a double whammy today, and two great games which need no intoroduction.

First up: 32 years ago today, Feethams, Darlington. Probably, the best birthday, my old man ever had.

He's still got some footage on 8mm film he took that day.



And secondly: 11 years ago, Forest in the Play-offs.

When I drove home from Wembley April 1993 I was disappointed, annoyed with our display. Driving home from the Chelsea match May 1994 I was totally numb and almost in shock. I couldn't believe what I'd just seen. On Match of the Day I think it was the first time they showed how the league table changed in the last 15 minutes. Now it's common place for that to happen on the final day of the season. On the Monday a guy I did some business with (a Blade) told me that there was talk of match fixing. Obviously it all came out later with the court cases.

Sharrow Blade - be great if you could get the 8mm film converted so it could be shown on here.

Never seen any stats about the Darlington match as far as attendance is concerned. Similar with the Leicester game in May 1990. How many Blades were at those matches in relation to the home fans? Can't ever remember a game at BDTBL where the away fans outnumbered the Blades. Leeds winning the title in 1992 (?) could have done it but obviously didn't.

It would be interesting to hear from Darlington and Leicester fans who were at those matches and their view some 32 and 24 years later. Almost a 'Roy's Retrospective View From.....'

There were loads of L**ds fans in our home game against Leeds on Easter Tuesday in 1974. We lost 2-0 and they clinched the Championship a match or two later

I'd forgotten how close Forest came to making it 4-4 with that header saved by Kenny at the death. What a disgrace that would have been given the blatant handball right under the ref's nose during the build-up to it.

11,130 - officially.

A Darlo fan I spoke to said there were more there than the 18,000 for a previous game against somebody or other (Cup game against Southampton, maybe?) and that there were more than 18,000 in against the Blades.

Mind you, I remember a poor lad in a "ticket office" - a sort of sentry box on the edge of the cricket pitch, gathering money from fans who literally chucked it in a bowl he had on the counter - if he wasn't the only one in a similar box then heaven knows where the cash all went!

A 5-1 defeat for United against a Combined Services team which featured Leslie Compton and Eddie Lewis of Arsenal.

United were one of the first teams to play in post war Germany.

This particular programme is a basic 4 pager, in poor condition. A good example would probably set you back a £100.


yesterday:

17th May 1948 66 years ago.

Played at Douglas Isle of Man. A 2-2 draw between Wednesday and United.

The programme regularly fetches between £180 - £200.



Today 26 years ago, May 18th 1988

Oh dear, the play-offs were a different format back then, unfortunately the result is always the same.

A 1-1 draw with Bristol City condemns us to relegation. Missed this one as I was in Greece at the time.

United continue their tour of Canada infront of 2,000 people in Victoria, with a 1-0 Victory

The bloke mentioned on the front of the programme is Watford born George Pearkes, that's some line of letters after his name. Served in both World Wars and won the Victoria Cross at Passchendaele.

Not quite, they did play Frankfurt four times over a relatively short period of time.

They played Eintract twice in Canada, on 2nd June 1962 (see above) in Vancouver and then in Toronto 7 days later.

They also played them in germany in September 1961.

The one on german ebay is the one at home in October 1961

The prices vary: the two in Canada (Vancouver £50-£70) and Toronto (£80-£100)

Padgett and Hampshire opening with Sharpe - died recently, RIP - and Boycott further down the order? Truly shocking team selection, like starting with Doyle and Collins up front and Baxter at centre-half. Sack the manager.

I used to love watching cricket at Bramall Lane. You used to see quite a few United players there as well. I can remember getting Hodgy's autograph in the pavilion one day and Mick Hill's out in the cheap seats another.

The 8th match of 11 against Blackpool, in the quest for the BOAC Trophy, at Dunedin, New Zealand.

United won 3-0 with goals from Tony Wagstaff (2) and Gil Reece. They would now be 4-3 up in the series.

Through the 50's and into the 70's, United used to tour abroad almost every year. Indeed, I can remember my granddad, John Spencer, telling me he had played against Ajax and Eintracht Frankfurt in the 50's in end of season tours. I've been having a flick through the Kirkham/Clarebrough bible this dinnertime, and United often used to tour West Germany and Holland. There's also a tour of Zambia in 1972, New Zealand in 1975 and a visit to China and Malaysia at the end of our 83/84 promotion season.

I managed to track down an NC newspaper with full line ups for both games.

Alan Birchenall wrote in his autobiography that both clubs agreed on which matches Blackpool should win, which matches Blades should win etc, it went according to plan for the first few games but Blackpool "tried to win" the matches that the Blades were supposed to win so the agreement went out of window and the matches then got more competitive especially with the tackling!

Aye, it was his ankles that finished him off in the end, Silent. Nowadays, I'm guessing, it would probably be a simple operation and a full career would be had. Back in the late 50's, that was probably it, done and dusted.

Those games saw the only appearances of youth team player Paul Ellis, It must have quite surreal for a 17 year old to be whisked from Sheffield to the Pacific in 1975. Furphy also took along his son Keith (another youth player who never made the first team) ad Denis C's theory was that Ellis was only taken along, so Keith being on the trip did not look too much like nepotism.

This is true to a degree, but I understand it was the first game that didn't go to plan as Blackpool didnt stick to the plan. From then on all bets were off as it were.
