I am honestly lost for words why Adkins and some of the fans on here want him on the wing, simply he's just not a great winger, he was brought in as a striker after a excellent stint in that role for Rochdale and he continued that form for us.
But now Adkins believes he is better off playing on the wing were he never made a big impact before, its frustrating as we know we have a goal scorer in him but on that wing he's taken out of the game.
I just believe he is more suited to a central position, were he can make runs and chase down balls, I don't see him as that tricky winger beating full backs and making the clinical crosses.
Real shame, he was on fire for us.

Agreed. I suspect Nigel Adkins has seen how good he is, and what a threat he can be, and is trying to shoehorn him into the team, but he has to be played up front.
With Billy an automatic choice for one striker spot though, I'm not sure how it can happen for Matty at present.

Adams is not a centre forward in my opinion much better out wide. We obviously miss Murphy out there but why not swap Adams and done today ,and sammon when he came on. Adkins had a very poor day today

Oh poor fucking Matthew. Winger or no winger, if he's asked to play out wide I'd expect him to, at the very least, give it everything he's got. Looked to me to be sulking and put absolutely zero effort in, delighted to see him not come out for the second half. I'm afraid it's players with that kind of attitude that see's us stuck in Division One, I doubt he would have lasted 'til half time if Bassett/Warnock were in charge.

The other thing is that if we're playing 4-3-3 or 4-2-4 then he's most likely to be out wide as he does a better job out there and can cut in

Che has shown how Adkins wants the 'wide strikers' to play and coming in late or providing the runs into the box is often ideal

When we don't have a plan b though, these players can look wasted

He worked well there in a 4-4-2 at times last season, so I'd not rule him out, but yes he's better up top in a 3 or a 4

Notts county away stands out, he played most of the game up top and then he moved out wide later on

In his post mach interview Adkins made the point that Sammon didn't come on to play as a winger, but as an "inside forward". He normally doesn't go into details like that, so I thought he may have picked up the criticism for bringing on Sammon for Done at Oldham.

I was going to post the same. If I recall rightly he played left of a front 3 for Rochdale and that's when his career took off. I say took off, he ended up joining us

Matty Done looked out of place on the wing. Not sure what Adkins was thinking - experimenting? Shoe-horning? Hope he realises Done on the wing aint a good idea.
